My friend Steve and I would play this all the time back in the late 80s and early 90s. We were constantly saying, "Get lost, punk!" Steve passed away 9 years ago. I think of him automatically when I think of this game and vice versa. Although, I haven't seen him in over 20 years, I will miss him forever.

Seriously, Kunio-Kun/Renegade is one of the most important arcade games ever made. This is the origin of what we think of as a "beat-em-up" with the action taking place on a plane (as opposed the 2D style). They managed to have bosses before we had a term for the concept.
The only important parts of the beat-em-up genre that were left to finalize were the forward scrolling instead of room-by-room fighting and quarter munching, which they added in the American targeted not-exactly-a-sequel "Double Dragon", which became the template for all of the non-2D beat-em-ups.
River City Ransom may be the NES game I played most. We had a mini-game of baseball we played in the early park area thanks to the basic physics engine. Just needed a stick and a rock.
The "Track and Field Style Game" was released as "Crash and the Boys Street Challenge" in the US. (Which is in the Kunio-kun graphic you have).
I particularly loved River City Ransom on NES. Great game!
I agree, the genre would not be worth that if this game had not come along. The designer was a genius and thanks to him being a bully growing up and getting into a lot of fights we all get to enjoy the fruits of his labor :-)

I played both on the ZX Spectrum 128K. Amazing games. I preferred them over Double Dragon on any system. I’m not sure why, I guess they left a lasting impression as a kid and nothing came close to matching those childhood memories.

It still amazes me how many people claim to be beat-em-up fans in their 30's or 40's now and big up Double Dragon or claim to be beat-em-up aficionados...but fundamentally they don't appreciate or acknowledge how advanced or revolutionary the first Kunio-Kun/Renegade game is and was. For 1986 this was not only the first time where you not only had to manage crowd/enemy placement but you had to manage the miliseconds of time with who's ass you were whooping before the surrounding enemy's AI's would gang-up on you. This was the first and few times in games where you could do could actual MMA before that was a thing just straight Ground & Pound with your body on top and just left/right/left/right with punches to the face until it's they submit or get knocked out like it's over. This was the first time where you had full control of doing combination attacks, grabs, throws, and you were fully immersed with the fight. It did a fantastic job of emphasizing the stress and pressure of an actual group fight similar to real life where you have to constantly multitask and be aware of your surroundings at all times to neutralize all threats of attacks.
Don't get me wrong I love all of Double Dragon and all the fighting games Technos Japan Corp did but Kunio-Kun/Renegade truly captures the frantic essence of a street fight better than all others afterwards.
I could not have said it better myself. The ground and pound was something I fondly remember as a kid playing it for the first time. I tried to emphasize the point you made but perhaps it didn't come across. It really was revolutionary like you said
i was nine when this game first came out and i knew it was nasty and revolutionary but like everyone else i moved on to the slicker double dragon but unlike everyone else i have always acknowledge renegade's cutting edge greatness
I loved playing Renegade as a kid at my local 7-11. I also played Super Dodgeball. It was just as fun.
Another great video. It’s amazing how much of Double Dragon you see in Renegade. Keep up the great content. This channel inspired me to revisit some of the arcade title I didn’t play, thanks to retro content on my Xbox one. Another video from you, about yet another of my arcade obsessions from back in the day, and it's excellent as usual. I played this until my fingers were sore!! I remember one time the owner of the arcade approached my friends and me while we were playing this, and told us that very soon, a new game would arrive, that was something like a sequel for Renegade, but for two simultaneous players. Of course, our jaws dropped! The game in question? Double Dragon, obviously.
Forget about the final kiss, this game looks like it invented teabagging.

Lol. The expression's are also done very well when hit and knocked around lol. River city ransom was countless play through with my cousins. :).
The tricky thing with the fourth round against Sabu (the final gun-toting boss) was he and his goons all carried weapons that could kill you with just one hit (he had a gun, his boys had switchblades). So you had to either take them by surprise, or make sure they couldn’t pull out a weapon.

I played this in an arcade when it was brand new and I was in awe of it. It was the very first beat-em-up, so everyone wanted to try it. I also bought the NES version as soon as it came out and liked it even more. Years later, just like you, I realized that the SMS version was a bit better. I also have the arcade version on my Switch just because of nostalgia, but the version I play most is definitely the SMS one on my NES Mini.

Yep, it was the sequel to Downtown Nekketsu Koushinkyoku: Soreyuke Daiundoukai (GB version Dokodemo Daiundoukai). There are so many more games in the series. I really enjoyed the 2 SNES sequels to the original as well, especially Tachi no Banka. I wish some of the Game Boy, SNES, PC Engine, Mega Drive, and arcade games had made it to that World Classics collection on PS4 and Switch.
There was also a Game Boy remake of Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun that we got over here as well. In the US, it was branded as a Double Dragon game, but in Japan it was a remake of Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun, but with graphics more in line with the NES and Game Boy games.

Oh Renegade I played the US and Japanese version they were different and the change is for the obvious reason to why. Glad you make a video about it. It's hard but I enjoyed the game

Thanks for turning me on to this game. I never paid it any mind in it's day. I just started playing it now since I've watched this video a bunch of times. I'm not very good at the game, but it is pretty addictive. The game's first screen music is pretty catchy. It does tend to get stuck in my head. Now I have to go watch your new Robocop vs Terminator video.
I did not get into renegade until years later after double Dragon came out. Now I really like it. Hope you enjoy the video

Kunio-kun Collection is getting a physical release via Limited Run games! There is also a long history of spinoffs and sequels to this day, including River City Girls & River City Girls 2 by WayForward Games & the first ever localization of the River City Girls franchise (where you have to rescue Kunio-kun instead.)

The Neo Geo also had a Kunoi-kun volleyball game, where you had a 3-on-3 game, and you got to swap out players with some of the captains of the teams you beat.

Arcade version has a bunch of thugs that look like the drummer from kiss on the level by the ocean. Nes version has sum dude riding a motorcycle inside an apartment. Doing 180 degree turns. Love that part

Renegade was also influenced by The Warriors director Walter Hill's Streets of Fire, which was a big hit in Japan at the time. I'm pretty sure the hero of SoF was the inspiration for Cody in Final Fight because of their shared name. Also, the big, greaser street gang stealing the hero's girlfriend, the rockabilly and big rock songs also had a lot to do with the feel of the cities in games like Renegade, Double Dragon, The Combatribes, and on and on.
In 2019, WayForward worked with Arc System Works (who had the Kunio-kun copyright for intellectual property) and with them, created “River City Girls,” where you play as Misako and Kyoto (the girlfriends of Kunio and Riki, who have been kidnapped) in this sequel to “Rivera City Ransom.” After a rough patch, they made it so a “special unlock” when accomplished created a “true ending” everyone was happy about. Next year they’re planning “River City Girls 2.”
For me, Renegade is one of gamings best beatem ups, if not the best. There are many other great games in this genre that have since did things better(graphics, enemies, length, etc.), but very few can beat the raw gameplay presented here. The "left" & "right" attack buttons are without a doubt what made this game so great back then, and why it has never really been bested even to this day. As it is a great mechanic, that once learned, just seems beyond natural, and the best way to play this type of game IMO! Would love to see a proper reboot of this some day, but maybe not, as it's almost impossible to improve on PERFECTION!
games were expensive when I was a kid. eight pounds was a couple of months pocket money. despite this I shelled out for renegade on the zx spectrum. I knew barely anything about it but chose it from my mum's mail order catalogue. I loved it. played it for months over and over. it had real nuance, i found the hidden mechanisms that allowed you to do flying kicks in 3 different ways stunning your opponent differentlty. then a couple of years later on holiday at the seaside I saw the arcade version in an arcade on a pier over the sea. strangely I didn't like it much due to it having quite a different control method but I'll always remember the spectrum original
Fantastic. Something similar happened to me with marble madness because I had never seen an arcade game growing up was only familiar with the Commodore 64 and Amica versions (which I absolutely loved) I finally saw an actual arcade cabinet at a fair the first thing I noticed was the trackball and tried to play it and didn't make it past the first level LOL
The "Track and Field Style" game is Crash n' the Boys: Street Challenge here in the States.
One trick that I enjoyed was running away from the bosses and dropping them with a single back kick. The trick worked by making sure you were spaced apart on the same line by kicking distance, then turning around and running away to get them to chase ya, then throwing that back kick out just before they reach you. If they get too close for you to kick them, your Sprite will turn around and face them with a punch instead, which will also instantly knock them down as they run into your punch!
I enjoyed using this trick on that big heifer boss on stage 3. I play cat and mouse with her. I wait for her to approach me on the same line (very important). While I'm on the same line as her, I back up, just walking backwards away from her until I'm about a space of kicking distance away from her, then I quickly book it to the other side of the screen. Just before I reach the wall, I throw a drop kick (time this right so you don't run or jump into the wall) and then instantly my Sprite is shown drop kicking the other way without landing, just in time for her to run into the kick dropping her like a sack of potatoes! Every time I face her, this is the way I beat her. You know it's hard to go toe to toe and trade hands with her, so this is a great advantage to beat her with. You could just stop and throw the back kick instead, but upon contact with it, she will drop forward underneath you, whereas the drop kick shows you sort of going right through her as she falls forward to the ground and as you land on the ground safely - about a kicking distance away from her. The flying drop kick is best utilized this way as it takes off about 3 bars of health from the boss's life meter in an instant.
The funny thing about the drop kick in Renegade/Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun is that the minions/ the weaklings fly backwards when they get hit with it, which looks normal in appearance, but every boss (including the boss at the end with the gun) lurch forward towards you, as you land that hit. You know in Double Dragon, when you get hit with the bat, and it looks like you sort of hold your stomach, like you're having a stomach ache, as you fall forward to the ground? That's how the bosses look as they fall from a flying drop kick. You have to fool them into chasing you, then suddenly run the other way and jump kick quickly at them( while they are still running at you) for that to be effective. 😁 You need a little bit more than kicking distance away from them - before you start running away - to pull this one off though.
Me and my mates spent many hours playing Renegade and Target Renegade on the Speccy back in the day. Usually while listening to Bestie Boys' License To Ill and MJ's BAD!

Never saw this in the arcade. My beatemup experience began with Double Dragon. Watching Renegade makes me wonder why they had such issues with slowdown in Double Dragon! This game looks like it runs as smooth as butter with many more enemies

This is one of those games that I saw people playing at the front of the supermarket. I was 6 or so and I was playing moon patrol. After my quarter was gone, I’d watch the big kids play this. At my elementary playground, we would pretend fight this game. It got use ready for bully kids later on and would fight them.
Target Renegade was the first beat'em up I played in the 80s on my ZX Spectrum.. One of my top games at the time, until streets of rage came along on Sega :D
It's a really good version
Despite the unpopular opinions of the NES version
It is one of the very best fighting games ever and here is why.
There were at least 3 moves that should have been in Double Dragon games and we're not. Tossing your enemy into your enemy behind you, Pouncing on your enemy while on the ground, running and jumping off the wall hitting your enemies with a flying jump kick. Yes the combat rivals any beat em up game ever made.
I also liked how you could choose what building or door to enter. Trespassing apartment buildings to unwelcoming residents? Also a maze on the final level.
Kicking bad guys off of their motorcycle and taking one and riding it around. Another dude this is awesome great gaming moment.
Not sure if the women beating you up with purses and necklaces were bad or letting you have it because you are a hoodlum. I'm guessing the second which makes this game even more funny.
The 1950s atmosphere is epic and the whole atmosphere of the game was really good when it came out. Before Double Dragon this game had it all.
Yes the Double Dragon games were an improvement overall. But they were also lacking some of the most important elements this game had. River City Ransom was the tip of the iceberg but I liked the combat much more in this game.
What's not to love about this game?
Kunio games are still favorites of mine and I play the new ones on occasion. But I still go back and play Renegade often. Try to get higher scores and retroachivements on my emulator frontend.

I remember as a kid playing this game in the arcades I use to act like I was playing as John Kreese from Karate Kid because I always thought the character resembles him.
Woww i loved this game! 48k.speccy and then on my 128k, then target renegade (brilliant front cover) then number 3 (lost in time mehh) have this on my upright arcade now, such memories
The first two were really good
Alot of people complained of the control scheme but I think it's genius and makes it possible to attack multiple enemies whiles surrounded
