  • Los Angeles is best known as the center of Hollywood film and TV production. But it's also home to the largest container port in North America, the adjacent ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. Every year, this facility handles more than nine million individual cargo containers, and processes more than $276 billion worth of goods flowing in and out of the ports. You might not know it, but this is a real hotspot for advanced technology vehicles.
It's the single biggest entry port for goods from Asia - cars, clothes, electronics, everything that Americans buy - probably passes through these ports. With all of that activity, it takes a huge number of vehicles to keep cargo flowing armies of big trucks, loaders, forklifts, and the side armies of big trucks, loaders, forklifts powered by gasoline and diesel fuel.
A big problem with all of those vehicles though, is emissions, particulate matter from diesel exhaust, and nearly 900,000 tons of carbon dioxide every year. Over the past few decades, there's been a big push to clean up the air, especially what's coming out of the back end of all of these trucks and heavy-duty vehicles.
The state of California has said that over the next two decades, it wants to eliminate sales of all new gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles in the state and not just passing cars but heavy-duty trucks, buses, basically everything that moves on wheels. And right now we're already seeing the early stages of that here at the ports with new types of battery and hydrogen-fueled vehicles that emit absolutely nothing out the tailpipe to help clean up those emissions.

I've been saying this for a while. Electric trucking needs to be done with hydrogen. BEV's are cool. They just take too long to charge. Hydrogen would be absolutely PERFECT for trucking AND the mining industry! Maybe even the aviation industry. BEV's are great for a personal vehicle and even a work vehicle that is parked over night and is only needed for 8 to 12 hours a day and only drives locally. But long haul and places where rapid turnover is necessary. Hydrogen could be KING... I WISH I woulda patented something... Fml...

Trucks and airplanes should be focused on hydrogen. Batteries are not an option there.
But you need a bunch of solar and wind energy to go with hydrogen.

So mechanics should start learning about these other engines before gas powered engines get banned.

It’ll be a while. Internal combustion engines will still be sold elsewhere in the US so long as there is supply (and demand of course), and the law wouldn’t ban pre-existing gas and diesel vehicles. I suspect we won’t see a majority of cars and trucks that are electric until 2035 or 2040, as the old cars begin to be sold off. New sales will be majority electric before then, sometime between 2025 and 2030.

@@Jake-rs9nq I work with air-conditioning and when dealing with R-22 refrigerant (the stuff that put the hole in the Ozone layre) they started phasing out r22 in 2002. By 2010 they officially stopped the creation of r22. In 2020 they officially stopped importanting it. There are still machines out there and will be for another 10 years at least. It takes a long time to make this kinda stuff happen.
It'll be the same for cars like you were saying. Just a slow and steady process.

They could make traditional gas engines run on hydrogen. Spoiler Alert: they don’t want cheap easy clean fuel. They want to charge big bucks to run every part of our lives.

What do you think, if hydrogen can take a serious place in trucking, could it bring Americans back to the cabover? After all, hydrogen takes up a lot of space and if you add a typical sleeper here, the truck will be quite long. But by placing the cockpit on top and removing the hood, you can win room for a big sleeper without turning the truck into a long monster that will be difficult to maneuver. What do you think?

How big is hydrogen? I have seen Toyota Mirai and I know they have a big tank for hydrogen, but it doesn’t seem so much bigger than the gasoline tank that it requires a new design

I recommend looking at Current hydrogen truck models. You will see hydrogen on the truck takes barely any space. At least not enough to matter. Hyundai for instance stacks their’s vertical behind the driver leaving full cargo room. That and not hydrogen is more energy dense then any known battery.

California can't even get it together. California's infrastructure is not able to sustain it. Look at how many "brown outs" we get where PGE shuts off electricity during fires and high winds. I say Hybrid is a best and most feasible way to go.
Let's say during a major catastrophic event like fires. Do you think you are going to be able to charge your car if you need to get out of the area? PGE shuts off your electricity. How are you going to get out??
Let's say that everyone has a hybrid. Your emissions would be reduced of course. That is the goal is to reduce emissions. There is no 100% sure way to be 100% no emissions in any country. That is a pipe dream. You would have to tell everyone to get rid of their cars which is not going to happen period especially in United States. Also if you are relying on green energy like Solar Panels, Wind, etc. Hello!!! Those are made by plastics, batteries, etc which are definitely not environmentally friendly. So, you also can't be 100% environmentally friendly. Each house is made with products that are not environmentally friendly. I can go on and on.

.hydrogen cars can really ECONOMISE MORE FUEL COST THAN ELECTRIC CARS IF WE MODIFY OUR CURRENT HYDROGEN DISTRIBUTION APPROACH !
The biggest cause of hydrogen cost is that WE TRANSPORT HYDROGEN BY TRUCKS, IT IS EXPENSIVE. Just try to avoid to transport hydrogen by trucks, then hydrogen will be very cheap. It means that NEED TO PRODUCE HYDROGEN ON SITES (WHERE FILLING HYDROGEN), OR TRANSPORT HYDROGEN BY PIPE LINES.
So we need to make 1 or 4modifications :
1/ Distributed hydrogen production on sites : hydrogen filling stations should be equipped with electrolysers, so hydrogen filling stations can produce hydrogen on sites from electricity outlets, instead of just receiving hydrogen from other places. Thus avoid problem cost of transfer hydrogen by trucks. Besides, nets of electrolysing hydrogen filling stations are ideal solution/market for intermittent renewable energy.
It is new worldwide coming hydrogen distribution approach, so it opens markets of mobile small sized electrolysers. Electrolysers are not so expensive for hydrogen filling stations.
2/ Use compressed gas hydrogen batteries with mini household electrolysers/mini mobile electrolysers : small mobility vehicles/mobility machines/mobility robots/mobility drones …, will use hydrogen gas batteries (hydrogen gas battery =hydrogen fuel cell + compressed hydrogen gas ballon 200-300 bar). And each of these mobility machines can be sale with mini home electrolysers, so that owners can produce to fill hydrogen at homes (charge hydrogen batteries at home). Hydrogen ballon 300bar is enough, so that hydrogen battery 300bar(fuel cell +hydrogen ballon 300bar) can guarantee more energy capacity than best lithium batteries, and it guarantees that the size of hydrogen battery 300bar is not remarkable bigger than lithium battery of equivalent energy capacity. Of course 700bar allows more hydrogen storages, liquid hydrogen allows more hydrogen storage. But for hydrogen batteries, gas hydrogen ballons 300 bar are enough for balance of performance-capacity-size-energy convertion ratio-ballon material-simplicity.
Hydrogen batteries 300bar + mini mobile electrolysers are ideal for two-wheel vehicles/small cars/small robots/drones and for trend of hydrogen mobility devices anywhere (easy to operate anywhere and easy to charge anywhere with electricity).
3/ hydrogen batteries for big station energy storage : Independent hydrogen batteries (hydrogen fuel cell + compressed hydrogen ballons > 300bar) + independent electrolyser is best variant. when excess energy, then run independent electrolyser. When need electricity, then run independent fuel cell. And intrigued working mechanism between independent fuel cell and independent electrolyser. That is all ! No complex automatic control system.
4/ hydrogen filling stations need to prefer using hydrogen pipe line than transporting hydrogen by trucks.
5/ The fundamental science dictates essential truth advantages of hydrogen.
Science : if a chemical energy storage mechanism is charged as quick as producing hydrogen, then this mechanism PRACTICALLY CANNOT HAVE ENERGY CONVERTION RATIO BETTER THAN ELECTROLYSIS PROCESS. Besides, it is possible to adjust electrolysis reaction speed to get energy convertion ratio of electrolysis better than any chemical batteries. The best one of all possible chemical batteries in earth conditions is HYDROGEN BATTERY. All revolutions of chemical batteries, lithium batteries, LFP batteries, LTO batteries, graphene batteries .. are for reaching to the features of hydrogen batteries

Is there any trucking company running hydrogen trucks in the USA in 2023? I have seen zero news of any truck sales to a company that is actually using them in a profitable business. Demonstrations come and go since 2017 with Kenworth, Toyota and Shell Oil. It looks like hydrogen trucking is busted. No sales in six years. Hydrogen vehicles were touted as the solution in 1999 and twenty four years later, nothing but pretty pictures and video of demonstration trucks. Show me the truck gigafactory that is going to build these trucks. Zip, zero, nada. It's a scam. The oil company has won with the hydrogen con job.

Gasoline engines that are 50% efficient? Hahaha nice joke. You may get 50% when going 1000 rpm but at 500rpm and above they are barely 15% efficient. Thats why motorcycles use so much fuel cause they run up to 10 000 rpm which is ridiculously inefficient
