The old hot rod coupe was a feature on their album covers and in all their videos back in the early 80s. The car was transformational. In every video people got into the car with one personality, then came out with another. They went from loser to cool just by being in the car. And whoever had the keys could make it happen. So the band, being the ulitmate in cool could share some of their cool with the common person. This is pretty much the same theme to the video for She's got Legs and Sharp Dressed Man. The picked-on nerdy girl or guy gets into the car but the hot chick or studly man gets out. It was a fun theme running through their videos at a time when the video mattered and was its own separate expression of art and often had nothing to do with the lyrics of the song. The videos were just short movies with the highlighted song as background music.
I grew up on ZZ Top, my dad was a die hard fan. Yes I got him the infamous key chain for Father’s Day one year. He used it till one day he looked down and it had broken off. This was the first song I saw on MTV. Yes, it was the coolest thing at the time. They sold the keychains mail order too, so we could all feel a little bit cooler.
In 1976, ZZ Top guitarist Billy F Gibbons commissioned Don Thelan's Buffalo Motors hot rod shop to build The Eliminator. Based on a '33 Ford Coupe, it was street-ready in 1983. The car was featured on the cover of the band's top selling album, "Eliminator", that went multi-platinum with over 10 million in sales.

They’re the masters of singing about the deed without stating it. Pearl Necklace, Tube Snake Boogie, La Grange, under Pressure, and Tush. This album is great to drive to.
This is from a long forgotten era where guys could actually write songs about wanting to score with girls and didn't have to worry about anybody saying boo about it!
No one cares about guys writing songs about wanting to hook up, it's when they're talking about rape, drugging and using women, sexually harassing women, etc. that is the issue and we take offense to. The reason this song is still popular is because they're not being disrespectful in their approach. Respect makes all the difference! And since New Wave was becoming so popular, he really wanted to know what DM was doing with their instruments to get their kind of electronic sound.
