@@antoniowebbmd Does it matter where you go for undergrad? I was wondering if a local university like University of Houston would be an ideal place to study compared to UT Austin since it's cheaper and closer for me to attend

@@squidwrtt5911 If you go to UH and get a strong GPA+MCAT it won't matter. If you went to UT and got a mediocre GPA+MCAT then you're at a disadvantage, and the more prestigious school won't matter. This is what I've read on multiple med school resources and physicians in competitive specialties.
Prestigious schools may have more research or science related resources, plus the opportunity for letters of recommendation from respected people. But if it's going to be astronomically expensive, you may want to pass.
@@squidwrtt5911 Hey, I know this is a month late, but I'm college right now because I want to be a cardiothoracic surgeon. From my understanding and findings, it doesn't really matter where you go as long as your school is accredited. Also, your major has some weight as well I'm doing microbiology because it's the best fit for me, however, I know some people that are majoring in engineering and other majors. Med schools look at grades and Mcat scores the most some schools will weigh your science and math classes heavier than your electives and core classes. Med schools also take volunteering and previous job work also into play but it isn't something I find to stress about. I suggest working as a CNA where you live because it gives amazing clinical experience such as patient to provider contact. I hope this helps.

It really sucks because most of the time during residency you are sleep deprived. Sleep deprivation = poor food choices.

Hi Dr. Webb, one of my relatives is getting spine surgery soon, and I just wanted to let you know what an amazing impact you guys have on patients’ and their family’s lives. I know surgery may become routine after doing so many, but all the fears and hopes and future of a family lies in that one procedure, and when successful you can change a person’s life for good for forever. For me, my cousin is getting surgery to remove a cancer on his spine, and it could potentially leave him paralyzed from the waist down, but we’re holding out hope that a good surgeon can help him maintain a good quality of life. Thank you for doing what you do-you make a difference each day. Your videos are inspiring me to potentially pursue spine surgery one day!

Hi, Dr. Webb! Are there any resources you recommend where people can watch videos of surgical procedures? I’ve had a hard time finding videos online showing surgical procedures when I’ve wanted to see exactly how something is done. Just interested in seeing how things are in real time having never shadowed a surgery.

It looked to be under one system, probably all the hospitals are owned/run by the same...company? Not sure how to word it, network maybe?

Your videos are amazing! I have a question, though. Why do you round at several hospitals? I shadowed a cardiothoracic surgeon for two weeks and never even heard of this.

It amazes me that you spend so much time driving between all the different hospitals.
I would expect it to be way more effective if the patients could all come to you for procedures, and to have online consultations for the ones that dont require a procedure.
I have really enjoyed your video. As a local Dallas resident, I like seeing all the places you visit. I have been to that Texas Back Insitute and was very impressed by the staff while dealing with a herniated C5-C6 disc. Keep up the great work.

@@Stoneface_ Well, first of all, all education is free, whether you can pass onto med school or whatever solely relies on your grades. Treatment will also be different because medical bills are not a thing here, everything is free in that regard as well. And of course the general way of work is vastly different due to the culture.
Your an amazing inspiration brother we need more humble, helpful and caring people like you who try to put yourself in the patients shoes .

Can a neurosurgeon perform a neck fusion?
Wow - Spine surgery is so complex and difficult. You have my highly respect. Are there set hours at all when you're a surgeon? I can imagine that there is not. My aunt had surgery on an anoyrisma in her brain. The surgery was planned for 4 hours but she was in for 10, so i can imagine that there really isn't a set schedule.

I'm an SCI patient. C567 unilateral facetal dislocation. I had anterior posterior spinal fusion with a cadaver bone and dog bone on the anterior aspect. My surgery was at Bangkok Hospital in Thailand as I broke my neck on vacation. I have idiopathic neuropathy bilateral upper and lower extremities. I have had four physiatrists, neurologist, gp, and my team in Thailand look at me and no one can source the reason for the neuropathy. Wonder if you want to have me on your channel. Bangkok Hospital Phuket was where my surgery was. I definitely want a life pain free and sharing my love for life. Every neurologist says I should be like Christopher Reeve when they see my CT and X Rays

Next to Jesus, my _Back-Stabber_ is my favorite person in this entire galaxy. I esteem _the Sandman_ in very high regard on my list too. Together, they saved my life, what's left of it.
My Father died of malignant hyperthermia, which is hereditary, making me a high surgical risk.
So I suffered for 35 yrs., in sheer agony, where mere seconds can seem to last for decades. Trust me... that kind of relentless torture wears you down... no matter how big and tough you think you are. I would have given up the launch codes in a heartbeat, for even the slightest bit of relief.
*I've learned that QUANTITY of life is a curse, if you don't have the QUALITY of life to get on with it.*
Survival was very hard, it didn't even make sense. But I just simply could not imagine myself standing before my Lord, to give an account that i had stopped trusting my life to Him, and took matters into my own hands instead.
Unthinkable. Right? Except i thought about it. Constantly. It's ALL i thought about.
True compassion is learned in such ways.

Dr., you are very busy with surgeries and working with patients which goes without saying, but would someone in your position or just surgeons in general be able to do research? For instance that first procedure where the plate was set to stabilize the patient's spine, would a surgeon be able to possibly research and make suggestions for better procedures?
Yes, you can go into academics and do surgery + research. There are some private practice doctors doing a lot of research also
