Thank you for making this video. Rinnai should have this in the manual. I was quoted $400 for a service call and a 6 week wait time. After watching the video it took me 15 minutes and I had about 25 moths in the fan cage. Once removed the problem was solved and the unit is much more quiet when it runs.

Finally got it fixed . We were ready to rip it out. Your video was my last try.
The fan was full of stink bugs.
First time in 2 years it has run for 20 min without alarm and cold water.
    Thank you.

Like all the other comments, I simply can’t say thank you enough. After 6+ months of intermittent cold water, 4 service calls (with 2 companies and 4 technicians) and zero fixes, I was literally minutes from ordering another heater. I saw this video and found my fan had debris. After clearing and cleaning it we’ve had about 10 days with no issues. I’m declaring a victory. Thanks a million!!!!

I have saved this video as one of my favorites. Ran into the code 10 issue twice in the 5 years. I followed the exact steps listed in this video, to clean the fan motor and put it back, and this did the trick. Great job putting this video and thanks for helping others.

Thanks! I had to clean my unit again this past week after getting cold showers again and another Code 10! I opened the fan to find 2 dehydrated red wasps looking for a new home many weeks ago! Problem solved.

My R94 LS is 10 yrs old..... installed in Hackensack MN. It has been a problem for 6 yrs...... a REAL problem for 3. Rinnai was of no help. I am rural and there are no dealers within 90 miles. My unit had gotten really loud. As you suggested I pulled my fan assembly today. It was full of dried bug juice and the fins were caked with dried bug guts and partially blocked. I pulled the assembly, blew it out then separated the blower motor from the housing. Took 40 mins using dawn soap and glass cleaner to get it 95% clean. Then I cleaned the intake just before the fan, and wiped out the exhaust area just above the fan. Put it back together, total time an hr. It runs so quiet now I can't believe it! Just took a longgggggg... hot shower. No Code 10. Thanks for your help.

So glad to hear! It took me a while to before I made this discovery myself back in 2018. I just re-followed my procedure from 2 years ago as I was starting to see the issue again and I indeed had a few moths in it and that is all it took to stop the heat buildup and error code 10.

I watched both of your videos and attempted to fix the problem. I thought to myself "I really hope I have bugs in my fan" . . . This way I would be able to fix it. Your video saved me big $$$$$. I was able to pull out the fan and voila! A crusted on honey bee AND a lot of dust was all over the fan. I scraped off the honey bee and took a toothbrush and cleaned the fins of the fan. HELPFUL TIP #1: The plastic connector on the fan is difficult to pull apart. I decided to leave it connected. I saw another video (someone else) where they broke the tabs on it. TIP#2. Use a Sharpie to write 1, 2 and 3 on the three connectors TIP #3 Use a Sharpie and draw an up arrow on the fan before you remove it. There is only one way put it back on, but this makes it a little bit easier.

I just found this video as I was experiencing the same problem with a code 10 error and "cold sandwiches" after about 10 minutes of turning on the hot water. Plus I had done all the other things trying to fix this problem. I took the fan out and found debris and lint from the dryer vent which was too close to the intake vent of the Rinnai Water heater. Not only that, I had sunflower shells from our bird feeder in the fins as well as all kinds of other debris. I'm assuming the wind blew the shells into the vent. I cleaned it all out and blew out the fins with an air compressor and have not had a problem since. Plus, the heater is now quiet as I don't hear a thing anymore. I did move the dryer vent a long way away from the water heater intake valve as well as the bird feeder. Thank you for posting the video. It's been months of problem free hot water.

Have an older RL 75, about 12 yrs, not a problem till this year, error code 10 kept coming up, cleaned out my vent, still getting a code. Now living in a rural area, pretty much means your screwed getting anyone competent to work on it, so I turned too RUclips alot, lol, for alot of things. My units fan is rotated 90deg and it's wiring is different, but man you put me on the path. I was able too find out how to complete the repair, found a cricket blender in the process, yuck, and have enjoyed error free days since. Probably saved a ton of money also. Thanks for taking the time. John Mentone, AL

@John Foreman, I have the same problem, an older unit with the exhaust fan assembly perpendicular to the access panel, rather than the newer ones that smartly mounted in-line for easier removal. How did you get yours out to clean it? I took a look at mine today and confirmed it has indeed turned into a cricket garbage disposal but accessing the mounts to remove looked nearly impossible. Can you share some insight?
Also, thanks to @Parker Smith for the excellent video and guidance!

Did mine about 3 years ago and had to do it again yesterday. Very little trash in the fan but cleaning it did the trick. On the 3 connectors shown at 1:10 in the video, I took a sharpie pen and numbered them 1, 2, and 3 to make sure I put them back in the correct plug.

I can't say thank you enough! I started having the same problem about 3 weeks ago. I became the master of the 3 minute showers. I was afraid that I would have to call a plumber and spend no telling how much money, but after watching this video, I was able to do it myself and I'm not very handy at all. It was a fairly simple procedure. The hardest part was navigating through those 1000 wires that are in the unit, and then making sure you didn't drop one of the screws. My unit is under my house, so this would have been a whole lot easier if my water heater was in the garage. Thank you for this video!

Thank you so much for this thorough video! I’m not a handy guy at all. But by watching you carefully show me the connectors to unhook and the screws to remove, I nervously tackled this project. Wow. Easy peasy. Mine wasn’t caked up too bad. I actually had a few dead wasps attached to the inside of the fan. Enough to cause drag or unbalance I guess. My first ‘code 10’ and cold shower was last night after 5 straight years of flawless service from my Rinnai. Hopefully my first is my last. Thanks again!

I have been fighting this issue with my unit for over 2 years. I knew it was an issue with air flow, but this was the first time I was able to figure out where the obstruction was. After taking it apart, my unit looked to have the exact same number of dead months as the unit in the video.

Long story but it may help just one other person.
I watched your video and happy that you described exactly how mine was suddenly acting. Just before I removed the fan, I decided to close up everything outside for the night. When I checked to make sure our outdoor shower was turned off I noticed that both the hot and cold valves were on with the dog wash nozzle closed, which made an open loop from the hot to the cold. The cold water had to be blending back though all my hot water pipes. (I did the plumbing on the shower myself years ago with just ball valves knowing I always just turn on the hot). Never thought about that scenario. I’ll correct that goofy plumbing sometime.

First off, thank you for sharing this with us. I have been dealing with this issue for 6-7 years, having multiple techs out and being GOUGED from anywhere from $150-$450 each time and had a couple of unscrupulous techs try to say it would cost $1000 or MORE to resolve the problem. This seems to be an inherent issue with the Rinnai but that seems to be overlooked. So how much money are we saving yearly if we have to pay a tech to service yearly plus service calls? I am looking at going back to a regular hot water heater, but I have had some of those unscrupulous techs say it would be thousands of dollars to re-vent, which I now know is bs. Definitely a design flaw but Rinnai is taking no responsibility for this. Thank goodness for RUclips !!

Thank you very much for sharing! Been looking for a vid like this for years. Fixed my problem. Like yours, fan had dead moths, bugs, even a piece of fiberglass pink insulation! Cleaned the squirrel cage blades and it runs so quiet now. Thinking I might put some aluminum mosquito netting on intake to help with the problem. I also had a broken corroded wire leading to a sensor on right side of burner housing, which probably added to my code 10 problem. I fixed that first and used it for a couple days before cleaning fan blades to make sure code 10 went away and it did.

    Question:
I have a Rinnai RV53e tankless heater that mysteriously quit working last night. The controller in the bathroom has no power to it. I checked the unit with a multimeter and the electrical outlet that feeds it has power but for some odd reason I cannot get it to come back on. Would you happen to know if my unit has a fuse that needs to be replacing? If that doesn’t work the only thing else I can figure is it might be the PCB board. Can you please help?

    • @ParkerSmithIII
      @ParkerSmithIII  4 года назад

I do not know what this could be and I don’t recall seeing a fuse inside mine. There could be one though. Probably need to call Rinnai. Call Rinnai Customer Support @ 1-800-621-9419 and they will probably give you some good advise.

Thanks for Excellent details and steps. I have same problem I check my fan super clean there was small air quality Sensor inside the fan I clean that also clean the duck still getting a code 10.
Finally I replace the fan with the small air sensor. Still getting code 10 .
    That’s lead me two option.
1- Clean the inside the heat chamber which’s lot of opening.
2- Two to check while taking a shower in one particular bathroom tripped with error code 10.
So my investigation lead me to the shower I open the shower Handel remove the Water balance in cartridges replace the cartridge.
The function of this cartridge is to balance the hot water with the cold water and the water heater sense it’s too hot is shut down and giving code 10.
This $22 Koehler cartridge solve my nightmare!!

We have the same unit and it's been nothing but problems. We had a bad main board which took a bunch of sensors with it; then sensors started dying one by one after it was replaced (each one causing us to lose hot water until turning it off and back on again). Now we are getting Error 10, so it makes me believe there has always been a blockage and it's been overheating; or the blower is dying (The one thing they haven't replaced yet aside from the other motorized parts and valves)..

    • @ParkerSmithIII
      @ParkerSmithIII  4 года назад +1

Ian Konrad you need to check your exhaust for blockage. Error code 10 is from an excessive buildup of heat inside the combustion chamber. Bugs, debris, bird or rats nest could be a problem.

@@ParkerSmithIII Cleaned it dozens of times. Turns out it was a slightly bent fan blade from the factory that was imparting resistance on the fan motor tricking it to think it wasn't getting enough fresh air. After a warranty claim replaced the whole fan assembly again, it runs beautifully.
Took a dedicated appliance repairman and his trusty oscilloscope to discover the fan was not outputting the proper voltage/signal when under load.
