- Egypt's share of the Nile river's water is 'untouchable'.
And if that supply is affected by the Ethiopian Grand Renaissance dam, there will be severe regional consequences.
That's the warning from the Egyptian president who's country is in a years-long dispute with Ethiopia over the hydropower project.
Ethiopia is building the $5B mega-dam on the Blue Nile river.
Talks to resolve the standoff have stalled
Ethiopia started to fill the dam's reservoir last year with no deal in place.
So does that mean El Sisi will go to war?
And has diplomacy run out?

Thank you Somalia brother for your positive opinion as you heard the Cairo government are selfish and arrogant
Egypt made a strategic mistake , they should’ve attacked Ethiopia long time ago . Abiya Ahmed has made peace with Eritrea so that side can not be attacked . Somalia currently has its own problems and Ethiopia has influence in Somalia . So this war is unlikely, And is happens it would be an ugly one but Ethiopia will go down without a fight .

This is not true at all. The US taxpayers helped fund the Dam and that is truth and fact. Every African American in Congress voted for funding which Ethiopia got before Mr Obama left office. Trust me, White folks in America could care less about what happens in Africa. And because of the disunity and discontent between Ethiopians and African Americans, those African Americans in power who have the power to make change in Ethiopia for the good of all Ethiopians pays little to no attention to the the region as a whole. First, I would like to thank the moderator/journalist for his balanced and unbiased questions focusing on the real issues raised by both Egypt , Sudan and Ethiopia. It is very evident that the tension between Egypt and Ethiopia on the dam dispute is getting serious mainly because Ethiopia is very close to see the fruition of of the Dam, that is 80% Complete. All the internal situation in Ethiopia and the relationship between Sudan and Ethiopia has been much worst during the TPLF led corrupt leadership than Abiy Ahmed administration. Egypt was sponsoring opposition groups like OLF, ONLF, etc. since the foundation of the dam was laid. It was not Abiy that changed the political dynamics in Sudan. Mr. Goitom, from Oslo , that I believe is a member of TPLF, was very much interested to use the platform to send out his political agenda on Tigray. The boarder conflict with Sudan has been there for almost 100 years and it is not a new phenomenon. So, the two concerns that have been mention by Mr.Goitom, are not new developments, and have no any adverse effect on Ethiopia's strength and its position on the dam. The case of TPLF is closed, and it is not as bad as it has been discussed in the media. To your information, PM Abiy has never questioned the strength of our military capabilities. He was actually making a national call to the youth to join the army so that we can be ready for any possible foreign attack. That does not mean the national army is weak. The proof for the existing strength of the Ethiopian army is that it was able to control and destroy 250000 militia of Tigray in two weeks. We Ethiopian may have differences internally , but when it comes to any foreign aggression, Ethiopians always come together to defended our Mather Land. Every single Ethiopian, as it is demonstrated in its long history , is always a stand by solider to defend our sovereignty. It is my understanding that Ethiopia and downstream countries will eventually come back to negotiation with the help of African Union. Thanks

Noone in the side of Ethiopia. Shame on you Aljazeera!
For those foreign powers who think they can manipulate our internal differences it is good to remind them:-
At battle of gura and gundet while emperor yohanes fought the Egyptians he was having internal power strangle with plenty of war-lords.
while Emperor Minilik fought the Italians he has internal power strangle with ras-mengesha, drought and plenty of local rulers who do not accept his authority.
While president meningitis fought siyad barre forces he was in internal strangle with the EPRP, TPLF, OLF, EPLF and WSLF.
while prime minster meles zenawi fought with EPLF he was having new unstable government , has internal strangle with his own party members and plenty of insurgents (even though the war was pointless). So every body can think that Ethiopia is weak at this historical time but to tell you the reality I don't know what it is but these are the recipes which make Ethiopians to fight more than ever. The water belongs to the country where it originates.
As a natural resource, Ethiopia may do whatever they wish.
For Egypt to demand access to the dam is not going to happen, and shouldn't. It is a matter first of national security and would never happen in western nations, nor would anyone dare to ask. Secondly

I'm a hydraulic and hydropower engineer. It's sad to see this dispute lasting for such long. Building a multipurpose dam on the river would mostly benefit the people in the downstream areas, same as the EGRD on upstream of blue Nile, which could benefit Egypt. To a certain extent, Egypt should be thankful to Ethiopian govt to build such a large dam without any money input while he could get much more water during the long dry seasons every year while the minimized flood risks during wet seasons. Among all factors, how much water is available during dry seasons is the key concern. The 3 countries should invite an experienced consultant to investigate and work out a best solution for the 3 countries.
I agree! Thank you for being unbiased. Where are you from brother?
Long live Ethiopia 🇪🇹🇪🇹🇪🇹 great discussion, the dam will definitely be filled, Production of electricity, irrigation, will follow, both Egypt and Susan will get their share of water.. but one thing is true this dam will be filled in July as scheduled, completed less than 6years, everybody in the region will prosper. The Egyptian-Ethiopian Nile River dispute has its origins in the Anglo-Egyptian Treaty of 1929. The Ethiopians were not party to the accord, which the United Kingdom purported to negotiate with Egypt on behalf of Ethiopia and several other Nile Basin countries where the British held sway. In 1959, three years after Sudan gained independence from Anglo-Egyptian rule, Khartoum and Cairo signed their own Nile River agreement. This 1959 agreement consecrated the Anglo-Egyptian Treaty-albeit with adjustments that benefitted both countries, such as increasing Egypt’s guaranteed annual allotment of water to 55.5 billion cubic meters and Sudan’s to 18.5 billion cubic meters. Again, Ethiopia and other countries were not consulted. As a result, Ethiopia-whose highlands, in the form of the Blue Nile and, to a lesser extent, the Atbara (both of which are Nile River tributaries) supply the main river with 80 percent of the water that flows downstream to Sudan and Egypt-has long maintained that the 1929 treaty and the 1959 agreement ignore its water needs.
