- Salvage crews have set free the Ever Given, a container ship that's been wedged across Egypt's Suez Canal for nearly a week.
It created a major traffic jam on the main shipping route between Asia and Europe, costing billions of dollars.
How long will it take for business to resume on the canal?

To me, the answer is both simple, and obvious. If you have a huge object that’s stuck, you need something of sufficient power to release it. If tug boats aren’t up to the job, then you need something bigger, perhaps much, much bigger to pull it out, for example, an empty cargo ship.
You would need a lot of hardened steel and someone to form into a shape that would not only strengthen the front of the stuck ship, but also to allow it to be pulled with enough force to free it, but not break it.
Why the experts haven’t thought of this is beyond me 🤷♂️
Evergreen is the name of the shipping company that operates the Ever Given ship that was blocking the Suez Canal. EVERGREEN is on each side of the ship.

Time has come to plan for major changes in how the countries that use the Suez canal and the host country Egypt to include wide rehabilitation and construction of the canal. We witness its importance and it calls for global cooperation.
Look up "Tom Scott Netherlands Wind". The Netherlands built concrete towers all along their canal to block the wind and stop ships from getting blown into the side.
This is certainly the most heated discussion I've ever seen on the channel.

The Suez Canal Authority may need to discontinue allowing huge MV's such as Ever Given access to the canal in extreme wind conditions, which can blow them into the sand, as happened in this case.

Widening the canal seems to be the simplest solution. But it'll cost billions. Another solution is to restrict the entrance of big cargo ships that are prone to block the canal.
Well there is only like 6 or something of this caliber , you cant really. Just buy better tug boats so the ship dosent get pushed by wind , as the ship does not go by its self it is escorted by tug boats lol
The canal was just widened in 2014. Without significant increases in revenue to Egypt.

That's a good point. Tug boats that escort the biggest cargo ships in case a strong wind or sandstorm hits.
@@Ardkun00 normaly cargo of this size and especially in bad conditions should be tugged, it is the fault of the canal operator for allowing i belive , but what done is done , lessons we're learned and by what I've read I think it was actually costing the canal 15 million per day , not billions so its not too bad considering who ever owns it is probly filth rich
All mega ships that are too wide and long for the Suez Canal should go around Cape of Good Hope, Africa or even further to the much-widened Panama Canal. Less chance of probability in case a terrorist war should happen in the Middle East.
I believe another blockage *can* be avoided with 2 simple measures being implemented. The 1st being that no ship with a draft beyond whatever depth, and 2nd the canal itself being dredged and *accurately* measured from end to end, then KEPT that clean by regular maintenance, or dredging(I'll leave that to the experts)

It brings me horror that terrorist could attack the west by simply blocking the canal with a huge ship like this then scuttling on that part of the canal... I hope they intensify the security.
@Thomas Vavrusco ah, yes the porates.... that’s another thing to think. And yes, they are quite a headache also. But they merely operate in small scale. What I was fearing is that, imagine a terrorist group hiding a bomb on one of those ships and blowing it on that vulnerable part of the canal. Stopping that canal is as critical as hitting a western country within their borders. It will affect the whole world.

The Vessel " EVER GIVEN " took on water because the underwater structure was damaged during impact. This incident is not over!. Keep in mind that tremendous forces were at play during that incident.

widening of canals
prioritising goods that are perishable on smaller vessles
finding new markets e.g. Suez a link between Asia and Europe and Asia may want to diversify trade in Asia pacific or east Africa reducing dependence on a sea route

The Evergiven was overloaded in my opinion. The view from the Pilot house is hampered by stacking the containers too high. Making a profit is important , but is it worth jepordizing the manueverability of the ship. Keep the ships under 1,000 feet long.
As soon as the Ever Given was out other ships were going through within minutes!

Yes it can be avoided. Post a sign that says "any vessel that prohibits passage and use of the Suez canal shall be forfeit along with all property within. The crew and captain of said vessel are subject to prosecution under international law". Problem solved.
How BIG can a ship get? Well, technically, there's no limit. We could build one as big as a country. However, navigation will be the biggest hurdle. But then again, if we build a massive ship that stretches from a European coast all the way across the Atlantic to an American coast, just imagine the SIZE! On the bright side, we can save air fare and prevent pollution. All that this ship needs to do is rotate 180 degrees and you are on the other side of the continent. Imagine a ship simultaneously transporting passengers to two different continents that's almost half-a-world away!

They could try using another heavy ship from the oncoming direction to speed towards and then stop before the designated point. Thus creating a tidal wave with the tugs being used for assist in direction from the shore?

Award by both countries. It would be a great PR move and time to rethink a LOT of things. Also awards, give to the tug boats that could have put their life on the line. The design of the ship is to blame. YOU CAN LEARN FROM THIS OR REPETE IT AT A HIGHER COST.

This is a nice reminder of the power of super moon and the high tides created by its tiny but useful gravitational effect on earth. BTW the earth is tilted 23.5 degrees from it's axis (creating seasons as the earth goes around the sun in a year) because of our lovely neighbor and without her our planet might spin in any direction it wants.

When that evergreen is transitting suez canal, i think they don't have sufficient powerful tug boats to push and guide her. if they have powerful tug boats it will not happen. that's my opinion.

Tug escorts could help avoid another grounding in the strait and narrow.
They do have tug escorts. They also have canal pilots that know and navigate ALL the ships through the canal. The ships captain actually never drives the ship through the canal, and relinquishes control to the pilots.

Could be avoided if dredging is done regularly and professionally

@@arnoldromppai5395 slight difference. Captains such as those on this ship are carefully monitored and trained. Step by step. But I agree, the *maintenance* of the current canal needs to be addressed first and foremost! Deal with the turnover of ships and the everyday buildup of silt. *And* slow down the coming and going of the current traffic so all things can be monitored/scheduled a little more carefully. I was astounded when I spent some time at my closest port of entry locks. Nothing even close to the Suez, but an eye opener just the same! The co-ordination necessary to keep just that set running smoothly is mindblowing, nevermind the SUEZ! Kingston possibly gets as much traffic in a YEAR as the Suez gets in one morning!

For the past 150 years several ships have crossed with all the shortcomings if the canal. Looking at the size of the ship and the number of containers packed on its deck, I feel that only human greed has overtaken in the past few decades.

Regarding this colossal ship getting stuck in Suez Canal, more encompassing the circumstances than we know. Yes, this may have been an accident, but also, you have to think outside the box. It may have been a deliberate act to create a critical situation economically for the global market and some of the war-torn countries that are not on the side of certain countries that desperately need these goods.

The answer is simple: parallel canals all the way from Port Said to Suez. Let's see if the world's shipping companies are willing to pony up the massive amount of US Dollars/Euros/etc. to do that construction.

_Is it not un-Islamic to let animals suffer???_ All this time, almost 20 hours since the Suez Canal was reopened for north to south traffic, and I see the _livestock carriers_ still waiting while higher value but less urgent container ships and chemical tankers take priority. The livestock on these ships must be suffering.
My understanding is that the reason for importing live animals for ritual slaughter is to ensure that they do not suffer when they die. This seems contrary to what the priorities of the Suez Canal Authority. Is the SCA being over-ridden by some foreign body? Or is it simply about who has money?

The canal won't be expanded. The liability lawsuits will take decades. In this case no one wins financially or with national prestige. No insurance policy will make anyone whole. There is not spare capacity to threaten to stop doing business with any ship line or the canal. The only good thing is the economic damage is spread worldwide so no single entity should be impacted catastrophically.
Build a parallel canal in the desert, it will take time and must be deeper and wider than the present one.
Surely a ship that size should have a tug escort to assist and stop this happening again .

If Egypt's government would only stop embezzling all the profits from the Suez Canal and start investing in good quality equipment and emergency excavation equipment like they should this would not be a problem but instead the billions of dollars just seem to be disappearing into pockets somewhere along the line.

If the vessel did get grounded it may have been capsized and blocked the canal for a long time due to strong beam winds

for the over the $159.000 usd the charge each and every ship to use it, one would think, with the huge ships would have tug boat on the side to help them go up, the speed that ship was going added big time to the probles it had the whole 5 miles they did make it up until they lost control fighting the wind, more speed adds to the wind and bank problems. but they will not do a thing they will not change any thing, there out for the big dollars per ship, each ship only saves around 79k in fuel and a few extra days time by using this short cut, rather then going around, id rather pay the fuel and extra few days the hand over that kind of money to the goverment there, it clear they dont care about getting ship though safe, its get as many as we can though per day, as each one pays 150k to 250k each for a 150 mile trip

It records what is going on on the bridge and in the engine room of a ship for analysis when there is an accident. Sadly these event recorders are only examined in 1/3 of accidents.

The canal is way to small i mean are you blind a ship twist a few yards and theres no room.i could throw a rock across it fool.deeper and way wider.the ship should be able to go thru it sideways.
in panama they use a panama ship captain to drive threw canal so don't have problems because they know the canal
