  • In the dark days of the Napoleonic War, Horatio Hornblower and the crew of the Indefatigable are put on half rations. But Hornblower is distracted from his hunger by the prospect of a commission, for Captain Pellew has nominated the young sailor for the lieutenants exams.
    The Indefatigable soon sails to the African Coast to buy provisions. While ashore, Hornblower and his men are exposed to the Black Plague. Hornblower proposes that they serve their three-week quarantine by sailing another ship back to Gibraltar to rendezvous with the fleet. The mission proves that the real test of a sailors worth comes at sea, not in the examination hall.
    Starring Ioan Gruffud as Hornblower. Based on the novels by C.S. Forester. All rights reserved to A&E--I own nothing. Description taken from the back of the DVDs.

    Robert Lyndsey played that character superbly. Always skirting around his affection for Hornblower, never to show it overtly though. A masterclass in acting throughout the series.

      It is often rumored that Patrick O'Brian modeled his character of "Lucky" Jack Aubrey after Sir Edward Pellew who is portrayed in the Hornblower series by Robert Lyndsey.

    Now I can place this scene in the series of novels, read during the last century. It's the chapter in _Mr Midshipman Hornblower_ called "The Examination for Lieutenant", at the end of the book I believe. The examination board is on a ship in Gibraltar, and Hornblower is struggling with an oral exam problem when the whole proceeding is interrupted by fireships.

    • @SantomPh
      @SantomPh 2 года назад

      The major difference is that Hornblower and Foster are rescued (ironically) by the crew of the fire ship. Foster is angry with another captain (presumably Hammond, but we do not know) who had a boat but didn't leave shore

    Because of courage and honor Foster owes Hornblower. Much later when his appointment finally comes through I wondered how they managed it when Hornblower is finally allowed to take his lieutants exam.I feel that Captain Fosters character was lacking. It badly affected his behavior as an officer. Hornblower who at first admired the man struggled to accept his short coming as captain of the Carolina. Captain Pellegew did not want to criticize others.

    • @SantomPh
      @SantomPh 2 года назад +3

      In the book chapter The Duchess and the Devil we are told that Hornblower is promoted directly by the Admiralty, so he either found somewhere else to sit his exam (unlikely) or that the Duchess, a British spy he helped return to England, spoke of him to the Admiralty and his promotion is not reliant on the exam.
      Both Foster and Hornblower are based on the real life Thomas Cochrane, who was 100x crazier than both of them.

      larboard and starboard are still used when speaking of direction relative to the bow of the ship, aka another ship coming off the larboard side. Port side came into use when ships had to dock with the left side exclusively for the men and the starboard side used for hauling supplies from supply boats.

    @songsmirth any captain who looses his ship would have to run the gauntlet of a court martial but unless found guilty a death sentence would have been if the captain was found to have been totally guilty of not doing his utmost in cases of cowardice. Most usually it would be a repremand that would just wreck their career. but if the worst had happened I doubt pellew would have been found guilty in this case
