Great video, preformed a powerpoint presentation about him 5-6 years ago in rhetoric class. A king nobody really knows about in Sweden. His time as Colonel Gustavsson is very tragic. As was most of his life. Thanks for making me understand more of the plot against him. It was a hard thing to explain during a 10min presentation.
It is quite interesting seeing Adlercreutz's relatives on the grasp of power today. Anders Adlercreutz is the minister of education in Finland and a descendant of Carl Johan Adlercreutz, also he himself was a Finn, born in Pernaja.
I absolutely love tis channel! I've been searing for good quality historical documentaries on Swedish history in English. I just binged all your videos. Thank you so much for your work! I hope you make many more!
Thank you so much! So glad you found the channel and enjoyed all the videos-that’s an epic binge session! Hope it made for an awesome Sunday. More videos are definitely on the way!
Mycket bra video!
Very much so! You can’t help but feel bad for the man. He was constantly being worked against, just like his father was in the later years of his reign.
He definitely made some unusual decisions. While he’s often depicted as foolish in sources written shortly after 1809, those accounts require a bit of caution. We aimed to understand his actions within the context of his time and challenges, and under those circumstances, we wouldn’t consider him 'stupid
Glad you enjoyed it! When creating the video, we relied on numerous primary and secondary sources. Two books that we think offer a great introduction to the subject are I stormens öga - Gustaf IV Adolfs regeringstid och revolten 1809 by Christopher O'Regan and Två dygn som förändrade Sverige: 1809 års revolution by Börje Isakson. From there, you can explore primary sources like diaries or notes from individuals who took part in the revolution. Thanks for watching!
Wow this is so great! There’s rarely any RUclips channels that showcase the history of Sweden and other countries in Scandinavia (that are in English). Will you be doing a future video on Sweden’s union with Norway and the eventual break up at the start of the 20th century?
Great video with modest means. This is why I love youtube, I imagine few Swedes know we celebrate our national day due to the constitution of 1809 and and even fewer knows about the background. Thank you!
Hey man this video is great. One of the best parts is the music choice, do you have a list of what you used? There's plenty here I've never heard but love the sound of!
In the 1990's a Wachmeister (Ian) led a populist party that got some 13% of the votes to the parliament. His political enemies called him Darth Vader of the Swedish parliament. His party name was Ny Demokrati. He was close to what Jacob Rees-Mogg is today. Whatever you think of Ian Wachmeister - he was right about the galloping migration into Sweden.
Around the 9th minute you use a portrait of Eugène de Beauharnais ( by Andrea Appiani) in stead of Napoleon. Admittedly he looks like Napoleon, mainly because his haircut, but nevertheless it's not Napoleon.
Thank you for the comment! I think you are mistaken. It's true Andrea Appiani painted a portrait of Eugène de Beauharnais which resembles Napoleon. But the one we use in the video is a portrait of Napoleon by the same painter. It currently shown at Kaiserliche Schatzkammer Wien.
1:36 In hindsight it's easy to say it was a bad descion. But with Great Britain Austria and Russia it was a good descion. Who would have fought that Auzterlitz would be such a devestating defeat.
Yes she is! It's the daughters( Sofia Wilhelmina) grandchild Victoria of Baden who married into the Bernadotte house. Oscar II said at the wedding between Victoria and Gustaf " Her cradle was in a distant land, but she does not come as a stranger, for Victoria's ancestry is Swedish." Also with the joining of the two houses the Bernadotte dynasty also connected to Gustav Vasa!
You’re absolutely right that Sweden’s trade with England, especially in wood and tar, was a significant factor in maintaining good relations with Britain. However, the situation was more complex. While Sweden did engage in trade with England, we also briefly fought against Britain alongside Denmark and Russia during the League of Armed Neutrality in 1801. Additionally, during the Napoleonic Wars, Sweden received economic aid from Britain to continue opposing Napoleon. This aligns with the fact that King Gustav IV Adolf strongly disliked Napoleon, especially after the kidnapping of Duke Enghien in 1804, which he viewed as a sign of Napoleon's aggression. It’s a fascinating period, full shifting alliances! Thanks again for watching and sharing your thoughts!😊
We don’t fully agree-it really depends on what we define as a 'revolution.' As Adlersparre’s son described, unlike the French Revolution, the Swedish revolution wasn’t about overhauling society or addressing centuries of grievances. Instead, it was fueled by a calm but deeply felt dissatisfaction with a specific element of governance. It sought reform rather than total transformation, aiming to correct the flaws in leadership rather than uproot the entire system. Thanks for watching!
@@alanywalany6460 Something I also wonder about. He might have been good, he might have been bad. But the conspirators in this coup d'état was worried that he would take out revenge on them for how his father was treated by them. So they decided to stop the whole family from holding any power. That's more or less the only thing I know about the son. Even if I'm Swedish.
He did it OK imho and far better than most trying to pronounce Swedish names. I actually thought he was a Swede but maybe I am wrong. I think it is more of difficulty to swap between languages in reading the script or something.
Skitbra video. Sällan man får höra om Sveriges roll i Napoleonkrigen inom populärhistoria.
It is really nice to get an insight on what happened to our Nordic brothers in the Napoleonic wars.
This channel is such a hidden gem, the production value is up there with epic history and kings and generals, you deserve so many more subs

Thank you for this deep dive into this history. Very well produced.
I know King Gustav IV was overthrown in 1809, but I didn't know exactly how his overthrowing went. This is such a great explanation video!
It is quite interesting seeing Adlercreutz's relatives on the grasp of power today. Anders Adlercreutz is the minister of education in Finland and a descendant of Carl Johan Adlercreutz, also he himself was a Finn, born in Pernaja.
Gustav IV's great-grand-daughter, Victoria of Baden, later became Queen consort of Sweden during Gustav V's reign in 1907-30.

Interesting and informative. Thanks.
Was very surprised to find an Englihs language video about the 1809 coup
Cool video! Amazing that the king almost got away :O

Finland might still be a Swedish duchy if it wasn't for Gustav Adolf's fanatic hatred of Napoleon.

Napoleon fought in defense of france, not to dominate and conquer! He was always trying to make peace with britain and russia!

This video ignores the fact Sweden exported a lot of wood and tar to England so they had to stay on good terms with this enemy of Napoleon.😊

That and the murder of his father was the ruin of Sweden and its people.
We lost our true identity after the Finland war
@@sucidail3939As an American with little knowledge about Swedish history, really? What is the "true" identity of the Swedish people?
It was not a revolution it was a coup d'etat.

On Wikipedia, it is defined as a coup d'état. Just saying.
Why would his son have been a good king? What did his son even do?
