- In the dark days of the Napoleonic War, Horatio Hornblower and the crew of the Indefatigable are put on half rations. But Hornblower is distracted from his hunger by the prospect of a commission, for Captain Pellew has nominated the young sailor for the lieutenants exams.
The Indefatigable soon sails to the African Coast to buy provisions. While ashore, Hornblower and his men are exposed to the Black Plague. Hornblower proposes that they serve their three-week quarantine by sailing another ship back to Gibraltar to rendezvous with the fleet. The mission proves that the real test of a sailors worth comes at sea, not in the examination hall.
Starring Ioan Gruffud as Hornblower. Based on the novels by C.S. Forester. All rights reserved to A&E--I own nothing. Description taken from the back of the DVDs.
I'm from Detroit. And served in US Army
Let me just say... I love this series.
"Just thinking of the distances we travel, and yet how far we've still to sail as men" would've been a fire senior quote. Its so beautifully and deeply corny but Ioan sells it 100%, and it almost feels like Horatio earned the right to say such a weird fucking thing by all we've seen him go through. What a good episode this was!
Avast Molly! This is the 3rd one of these I have watched. I soon will dig out my Hornblower DVD set and re-watch. Oh yes, Thanks Molly! Has anyone seen the movie "Captain Horatio Hornblower" with Gregory Peck? Great movie!
Gregory Peck and Virginia Mayo, right? Fun filmI
Never heard such a polite argument between two men. LOL.
Mr. Hornblower is always looking to help others with his bravery.
This episode must have cost a fortune. That first ship going down with the cattle in it was -- wow! Impressive!
Great episode, although one starts to wonder whether Hornblower has super powers.
He's not exactly "old" @ 37 or 38 years of age & I bet he still looks very youthful because i sensed he was someone who took good care of himself & he was nearly 30 when they made the last episode or movie. He could come back & simply continue his role as Horatio Hornblower & let the excellence continue. It was a great idea and he was the perfect choice for a role that seemed to be made for only him. He was great. I watched some of them the 1st time around in the late 90's & really liked it.
Fire when ready lads..shows the glory and love of being in the british navy during the napolean eran great food, great mates, and great times and u crusie around the world on your luxury liner...hats off laddies to king george...great series same parallel as the sharpe series, with a much better and larger budget than sharp..enjoy the english as always do entertainiment the best.
This is set in the Napoleonic era, shortly after the adoption of limes in the diet of sailors around 1800. Prior to that scurvy killed a significant percentage. Great work if you can get it.
Bloody good show old chap!
As an American , if at the time of the
Revolutionary War , I would be loath
to fire on his ship.
Such a great captain , and crew
Merry Christmas , from the
Colonies , fair wind and following tide
@@tomdooley3522 and Merry Christmas to you sir
Ohh great credits.
Well thanks for posting, great series.
They only made the last one about 6 or 7 years ago so it's not that long ago.. I'd love to see another because it was the greatest old type epic series I've ever seen.
You only made this comment 10 or so years ago....your wish has yet be be granted sadly
Thanks very much, Bramblefox for posting these videos. In spite of modern electronics, being a ship Captain still remains much the same.
Flat out excellent! A&E should show it again.
A Dewey Lamdin series would be great. Ram cat
Well thank you very much for posting. very difficult to find the series on the internet and i dont usually like wating shows on youtube (beacuase of the 'parts') however, these episodes are very well done and good quality, consider this a THUMS UP :D
Also, life was a lot cheaper in those days, and the men pretty tough. If you didnt expect to live much past 30 or 40, a life in the army or navy wasnt such a bad deal when compared to the mines or mills.
And although Spain, Holland and France were big deals on the continent, the sea was effectively British territory for a very long time, and thats a lot bigger than continental europe, so its not too surprising that we gained the Empire.
It was actually 9 years ago, since the last one was in 2003. But yeah, I would absolutely love to see the conclusion as well. The show got cancelled because it was apparently hurting A&E's pockets, or so they say. It's up to Ioan himself now, but he made the statement he was considering to make it himself back in 2007.
One can always hope, I guess.
I loved this show as a teenager the outfits are especially noteworthy. Anther show I really like is Sharpe
Salutations to Bramblefox for these fine videos !
At the end he's like, "I'll be along shortly. I'm just thinking about seahorses."
The lad!
Ok, I was at least close and they guys in it probably have not aged all that much & make up can do wonders! '07's 5 years ago and nothing seems to be in the works but it would be great to see another one perhaps at 3 hours in length this time around. It was a pre-pollution setting and the world was functioning just fine..
That ending ended off a bad note. Hornblower messed up his exam and they two captains on the row boat are going to kill each other over petty shit.
We see this from the Jr. officer's level but not much of the real sailors. It is amazing but the Real-life job of it was I fear FAR from what it looks like here. Let alone the smells!
Horatio's only 38 so he wouldn't look ancient..
Again, thank you so much for these; I have tried for a long time to see the series, but they are not available here in South Africa.
@artj22850 You always look it up on Ebay. The series may be Cheaper there, than on Amazon.
That's not what I'm talking about at all. I'm sure Ioan Gruffudd would still look good enough for his character, but I'm talking about the actors that play Matthews, Styles, Bush, etc. If there's anywhere we can see an age difference, it's in them, and it might look a little awkward.
Here's the problem, though: How old do you reckon Matthews, Styles or Bush would look if they did another episode?
Most officers wernt cruel or sadistic, although there was a fair share like that. Switch cruelty for discipline, and thats closer to the mark. And all though the Navy did press men, the army didnt. There was no conscription in Britain until WW1. Although a good deal of men woke up hungover to find they'd "taken" the Kings shilling.
👍🏻
I hate autospelling!
Was there ever a crossover with Sharpe and Hornblower?
No but there is a Sharpe book with him at Trafalgar.
@@vindolanda6974 did they get on?
@@TheKlink no I meant the book is just Sharpe, no Hornblower. Anyway I can't see those two getting on.
@@vindolanda6974 no, he'd probably save Hornblower using plot armour and then inadvertently insult him. If it was filmed by both productions the other "guest" character would probably have been played as an arsehole or idiot. That would've been a great in-joke.
how the background music is named please?
ty for showing us the credits and not the film great click bait i can only hope people read this before the credits
British.
