  • In the dark days of the Napoleonic War, Horatio Hornblower and the crew of the Indefatigable are put on half rations. But Hornblower is distracted from his hunger by the prospect of a commission, for Captain Pellew has nominated the young sailor for the lieutenants exams.
    The Indefatigable soon sails to the African Coast to buy provisions. While ashore, Hornblower and his men are exposed to the Black Plague. Hornblower proposes that they serve their three-week quarantine by sailing another ship back to Gibraltar to rendezvous with the fleet. The mission proves that the real test of a sailors worth comes at sea, not in the examination hall.
    Starring Ioan Gruffud as Hornblower. Based on the novels by C.S. Forester. All rights reserved to A&E--I own nothing. Description taken from the back of the DVDs.

    Might have been so hard to live or even survive on these boats but God what an epic time, full of glory, exploration and unlikely adventures.

    @Firefox123455 It is :) Mr Gruffudd is from Wales and was raised with Welsh (Cymraeg) as his first language. You can actually find vids of him speaking Welsh here on YT. It sounds awesome :D

    "In the dark days of the Napoleonic War"... The intro-blurb would seem to be incorrect. This episode is apparently based on some chapters of the novel that is set at the earliest point in the Hornblower chronology, in the mid-late 1790's, a few years before Napoleon came to power in 1799.

    Why was a small supply schooner attempting to engage a Frigate? I never heard of such a thing happen.

    • @SantomPh
      @SantomPh 2 года назад +2

      The Captain was a guest but assumed command and forced the supply ship to engage despite un favorable odds. Foster was known to be a reckless, daring commander but at great cost

    • @raylast3873
      @raylast3873 2 года назад

      Given that a small schooner or barque of this sort likely with a civilian crew has virtually no chance of taking on a military frigate, he‘s either insane or trying to force the frigate to sink them so as to deny them the potential prize.
      As long as running was an option, however, does not seem like a reasonable decision in any case.

      @@raylast3873 and we see how one under his command decided to try and knife him. its like sharpe speaking to lord kiely. "no wonder your men desert you. if i take a man into battle, i'd like to offer him a better chance of surviving"

    • @raylast3873
      @raylast3873 2 года назад +1

      @@StopFlaggingVideos in fairness, that man is a merchant sailor, not a naval rate. Their threshold for going along with life-threatening plans may be quite different. Undoubtedly someone like Hornblower would get that it‘s different and work with what he has, but a lot of military officers would just expect everyone to obey like they are used to.
      In this case though, even from a military point of view running was arguably the better option.

    Back when English people were able to speak more than one language. On the one hand, points off since French is as bougie a language as it gets…on the other hand, French is really hard, so points for Mr. H.

      It is set in 1795 just after the Peace of Basel but a year later, as Pellew predicts , Spain joins France in the Third Coalition.
