  • @WouterVerbruggen
    @WouterVerbruggen 4 года назад +8

The only "problem" these cheaper boards have is that you can't use the top-end FX chips. And if you can, you shouldn't, as the VRMs are not up to it. These boards, including this one, are essentially an older AM2+ platform jury-rigged to support AM3 and later AM3+. Hence also the lack of SATA3 and such. Back in the day, you heard a lot that people upgrading their Phenom II X4/X6 to an FX 8 had performance issues, which was 100% because they had boards like this. For FX 6 chips like you used, it was and is indeed a great value

    • @IsmaelWensder
      @IsmaelWensder 4 года назад +1

True, but here I am using the cooler stock of a Phenom II X4 but with a 120mm fan, with that the vrm receives cooling and that kept things stable over here even in overclocking.

I think that this motherboard tends to increase a lot of vcore if it is not configured manually, in addition to heating the vrms causing loss of performance, maybe an undervolting coupled with overclock improves this, it worked here.

Hey Phil! Amazing Video man! I Built a similar system, I opted for the 760G Chipset and a fx 4350 . I paired it with a GT 740 just as my Home theater PC/console gaming PC. and even with all the shade around FX based systems i really enjoyed using the system. I used this system for about 5-6 years as my main pc. I payed 90$ second hand and included case, CPU, mobo , ram , 500GB hd and 500gb SSD(boot). Really great value for money in my own opinion. I Recently obtained a Red dragon rx 570 4GB for 40$ on a local marketplace, and it really was a nice upgrade for the system. I've had my own fun overclocking , gaming, and even watching some youtube videos. Regarding overclocking i hit 4.6ghz on my fx 4350 stable (even gaming) . And the whole bottle-necking the GPU i don't believe its an issue depending on the title. But i did run this rx 570 in an 8th gen i5 and of-course with generational improvements you will see ALOT higher proformance, Again at a higher cost. Im really pleased with my FX system . It chugs along with my biggest and baddest gaming rigs i have built.

I had an FX-4200, which is the only true quad-core in the entire Bulldozer lineup. It's basically an FX-8100 with the second core in each module disabled, so it doesn't have the resource-sharing issues of the other models. At the same clock speed, it outperforms the FX-4300 and all of the newer FM2 CPUs by a considerable amount in multi-threaded workloads. Its biggest drawback is the low clock speed, so you really need to overclock to get the most out of it, which requires a good motherboard due to its 125 W TDP (since it's based on an 8-core).

Since your asking about overclocking every platform is different for fx specificly the two clocks you want to focus on are core and Northbridge for the purposes of a quick overclock for a video it's probably just best to stay to the multipliers as playing with the fsb adds complication.
-On fx you want your max temp to be 75*c or less
-For vcore on a good motherboard 1.5v is safe but you'll probably run in to tempture limits before hand
-For cpu nb 1.35v is safe this should get you to arround 2600mhz
-On latter model fx 4.5 post 2013 should come pretty easy 1.35-1.4v but as always this isn't guaranteed
    - ocing the HT link is only useful if your running multiple GPUs even then the impact is very minimal. it is also really hard to test for stability, its best just to set between 2200-2400 and forget.
In the fx scene Intel burn test with 10 passes at very high is considered stable there are also some custom settings for prime 95 but for the purpose of a video this may be a bit extreme ( also watch out for the vrm temptures as fx draws alot of power adding some airflow to the area is not a bad idea)
If your looking for more info for fx the best place is the 8350/8320 owners thread on overclockers.net
The X58 platform is much like fx with focusing on uncore and cpu frequently and most chips are not unlocked so you'll have to overclock using reference clock and step down multipliers
But for every Intel consumer cpu it's pretty much set multipliers to target raise voltage till stable.
Ryzen the biggest focus is the ram (expessialy in zen 1 chips infinity fabric clock is 1/2 ram speed)as core is almost guaranteed to get to 3.8-4ghz a useful tool for helping with this is

@@icedoutshef I guess I should have disclamerd that AMD's max safe temp varies greatly depending on what chip.
After monitoring years of data form the fx 8350 overclockers club I've settled on 75 c absolute max safe temperature under stress test aplacarions and a few other people have come to that conclusion. but also with the max safe voltage being 1.55 I know that more than a handful will go over that if they have the cooling to and have yet to noticed any I'll effects years on.
75*c is my stress test temptures on my 2 fx (8350 pre 2013 chip 8320 post 2013 chip )systems both have cycled in and out of daily use for the past 6 years and they still hold the same overclock as the day I got them.
Also if you've ever used a 6100 with a stock cooler at stock clocks 70*c + gaming isent unreasonable. This was noticed with a open air system at 25* ambient.
But if you want to be really safe I'll leave these quotes from the stilt who is one of the most knowledge public facing people on the fx platform he also holds the world record for highest cpu clock.

Indeed, if forgot the specify the limits for the "socket temperature" (SBI-TSI).
These are the official AMD specifications.
      AM3+ / TDP (Infra Code)
      220W (FH) - 57.0°C
      125W (FR) - 61.1°C
      95W (WM) - 70.5°C
      FM2+ / TDP (Infra Code)
      95W (XB) - 72.0°C
      65W (YB) - 71.2°C
These temperatures only apply at stock power levels.
At higher power dissipation they are naturally lower.

      Roger
      (also from the Stilt)
Based on my personal experience on hundreds of different AMD 15h parts; the overclocking capabilities of these chips generally start to show significant retardation when the "socket temperatures" (SBI-TSI) exceed 60°C. At this point the "package temperature" (tCTL control value) can be anything between 45 - 65 units. The tCTL value is calculated based on several values and one of it´s calculation parameters (power scalar) varies between different TDP and leakage level parts. The "package temperature" (tCTL) is not an actual temperature which is a reason I refer it as units instead of degrees.
The official specifications from AMD tend to agree with my experiences.
125W TDP FX parts are rated for 62°C (SBI-TSI) maximum temperature at stock settings.
The maximum "package temperature" (tCTL) is 70 units on all AMD FX CPUs (AMD specification)
In higher temperatures the leakage currents will increase even further and the thermal conductivity will reduce as well.
Lower thermal conductivity will make it yet harder to remove the heat from the CPU core.
      151.1W/m-K @ 20°C
      142.7W/m-K @ 40°C
      134.3W/m-K @ 60°C
      125.9W/m-K @ 80°C
SBI-TSI temperature is available on all motherboards as implementing it is mandatory.
This is also the temperature which the bios displays.
Generally there are two major manufacturers (ITE & Nuvoton) for the LPC/IO ICs which are used to read the SBI-TSI information from the CPU.
They are very well supported by most of the hardware monitoring applications atleast for the temperature part.

higher temperatures means more voltage at given clock which means higher temperatures this is a pontical reason for the stock temperature figures trying to pull down power consumption at stock clocks.

I had this Mainboard in my first own PC and it was actually quite okay, especially considered for the price. I had paired it with a FX 6300 and a GTX 1050ti.
But I noticed some disadvantages. First of all, the positioning of all the ports was pretty well thought through, but the problem is just PCIe 2.0 and SATA 2 and the lack of USB 3.0
Furthermore the amount of I/O Ports is not that much and thesSingle 3 Pin fan connector with limited Speed Controller in the BIOS was anoying as well

Just got a Asus board with a 990fx chipset, Gigabyte GTX 750ti OC and FX 6200 for free. Friend gave up trying to figure out how to OC it. I told him i'd show him but he's far more stubborn than I. He chucked it and built a used i7 8700 system.
I have an 8350 and 12gb DDR3 2000. Plan on putting the 8350 in that board. Already have the memory in it @2133 mhz.
I ran that FX 8350 as my main rig from 2015 to 2018 and it ran everything I threw at it... except anything that needed fast single core of course. Bone stock. I know it's a good bin, I OCed it with the stock cooler on a 970 board to 4.7 ghz for a month before I thought better about the longevity of the CPU and VRMs, however I know I can get more on the Asus board. But between the HD 7850, RX 480 8GB and GTX 1080 that it was paired with, it never gave me many issues. It was a good CPU as is the FX 6200. However that single core score and not wanting to spend an arm and a leg on a 990 board had me upgrade to an i7 3770/Intel DQ77MK combo that beats it in every way.
It's been 2 years since that and my GTX 1080 is starting to get old too, so this year I am saving to get a fully modern rig.
However these FX CPUs are nearly bulletproof and have survived a long time in the wild. Thank you for another great video.

sry I have to say that now but on aliexpress the cpu is much too expensive.
and an intel cpu is twice as strong as amd cpu.
for example the Intel series from the 2nd generation and from the i5 2400 and higher or.
from the 3rd generation 3450 and higher. The Intel Cpu costs around 20 - 30 € and are 50% stronger
if you buy the cpu in your own country or via Ebay Europa.
aliexpress is no longer cheaper in all offers but sometimes even more expensive.
thanks anyway for your video, great work!

nothing wrong with used components Athena My media server she is a mix of new and used components like the motherboard a MSI Z97S SLI Krait edition along with its CPU (Intel Core I5 4590), 32GB Patriot DDR3 ram i bought used while the cooler and the 2x2tb WD blue drives i had bought new while psu, 320gb WD blue (OS drive) was used from a previous build its been running for almost 2 years with very little downtime like very little power outages, blowing out dust or defective CPU cooler (supplied bracket for intel boards was defective)

I believe I have the same board but a newer revision that has two USB 3.0 ports at the back. Still no front panel header though. Not a bad board at all!
Edit: Mine also seems to have 4 dimm slots

Eh the whole point of these processors was to overclock them but honestly this CPU, still in my son's (on his own now) computer, does the job for so many games and yes would be good as an everyday doing simple tasks pc. As for the mentioning of ram yes my son's pc got a boost in overall performance when I added just another 4 GB of DDR3 ram for a total of 12 GB DDR3. About 1.5 years ago this had to be done as you clearly see some slowing down for some reason. Also for the regular user USB 2.0, if that is only what is on the board, is just fine. I will never pay more for a board just to get USB 3.0 or higher. Also got to say my budget build hobby got slowed to a crawl in 2019 as the price for motherboard when converting to the Canadian dollar just wasn't that great. I hope our dollar can make a darn recovery at some point. :S Great and fun video as always and as for you using a test bench man I badly need one. It is more practical than buying cases for every system and also one may just want to wait on an extremely good deal on a case and that can take some time. Finally got to say for someone that named their daughter after AMD for me to have no AMD systems in the house right now or even components this is just horrible. LOL!

Excellent! Admit it... You just have a weak spot for these FX chips Phil :)
BTW. I can understand that. The AM3+ has an advantage,as it can handle both XP and Win 7 + 10. With the AM4, there is no XP support. Maybe the AM3+ platform is the best low-budget XP(retro) + modern Win10 to use.
I stil. have a weak spot for the old LGA775 (but I'm done selling these as budget gaming rigs) I did snatch myself a QX6850 from the "Express" at the end of 2019 for just 20$. Perfect CPU for my High-End a Retro XP + Win 7 rig (Asus Striker Extreme - nforce 680i SLI with 2x GTX 285 + 4gb DDR2-800 cl4, 250 GB HDD for XP, + 250GB SSD for Win 7). And I got lucky with the silicon pick. It can run fine at stock 3 GHz speed at about 1.068V (keeps the temperature nicely down - and should make it last for many years more).I chose that CPU, because it is the best Quad that fits on a nforce 680i chipset. And OC'ing a quad on a nForce 680i is looking for troube. No worries... no games before 2015 require more than 3GHz Quad for smooth playing..
Only problem is, that when I use this occationally, I actually miss the Win 7 in daily use. It really was better than Win 10. Not all these messages popping up in the low right corner. And it use far less resources. Especially on the old LGA775 (with 4GB RAM), it performs better than WIn 10. Maybe the same is true on AM2 / AM3 systems as well.

    Hi Phils,
I started to planning build retro Win 98 PC with - CPU: AMD Thunderbird 1.4 GHz, GeForce 3 Ti 200, RAM i will find without a problem but i have two questions for you.
I thinking to add yet Voodoo 2 or Voodoo 3 pci version, it's a pci slot but will be compactible with GeForce 3 Ti ? I want to build pc for games from 1997-2000 and also with Voodoo 2 for early games which supports only nglide rendering and end era of DOS games like Need for Speed SE, Duke Nukem 3d, etc.
Second question is - what Motherboard are you recommended for socket 462 ?

Is that the AC1200 USB wifi adapter from ebay? I use them in all my flip builds, very nice for the price.

As for how well the FX cpu performs, it would be interesting to compare minimum fps, average fps and frame-times (micro-stutter) with a generally more powerful cpu. I suspect the FX can't keep up in average fps but should have quite stable frame-times because it has (kind of) 6 cores. Would be interesting to compare this to a more powerful quad-core cpu at a title which is optimised for multi-threading.

Modern AMD Motherboards may differ in performance little but due to different things
For instance less devices requires less attention
    And
Good power delivery will give cpu a bit more breathing room
Getting less onboard devices usually means worse power delivery so it is hard balance

In Germany this really isn't worth it. It is possible to buy a used B350 motherboard for very little money and a NEW Ryzen 3 1200 only costs 50€. The performance and the upgrading path are better.

chipset does actually affect the GPU performance from my experience the hyper transport and northbridge frequencies and allows for more gpu to be used when they are overclocked. also fsb over multiplier overclocking does more for single core speeds and memory bandwidth but is very difficult compared to multiplier because of mem controller lottery.... fx acts like pentiums from back in the day.... pump the fsb and crank the clocks and itll do work but at stock they are OK at best....

yea im kicking with the 8300 fx 16 gigs of ram ddr3 1600 mhz.. with a rx 580 8 gig and have no issues atm but yea one thing is true that the fx cpu makes a great heater .. my rooms in the basement so it all works out well .. only oc to 3.7 .. i could do more but i really dont see the point just to get like 3 to 5 more fps ..

You can actually get this to 32GB RAM.
    I have used 64GB on Asus SaberTooth 990FX R2.0 (4x 16GB).
You can purchase such RAM on ebay, but it is not cheap (well it is 64GB in 16GB Dimms). There is only available
