Hello and welcome to this weird crevasse of the internet where we get really excited about music (particularly Taylor Swift) and break down our favourite albums and songs. THIS. This version really shows the gaslighting. The emotional abuse. And her standing up to the manipulation that it existed, that her memory and sense of reality isn’t distorted. It hits hard.

Her list of relationships dwarfs most, and virtually all of them have that fake “publicity stunt” feel to them, even if the guys involved don’t seem to initially know that’s all they are. There’s also a serial killer-esque pattern to them. They involve already famous men who are having a particular upswing in notoriety at the moment she starts seeing them.
Additionally, their connections to Swift seem completely generated out of thin air. Taylor Lautner, out of nowhere. Eddie Redmayne, out of nowhere. Harry Styles, out of nowhere, Jake Gyllenhal, out of nowhere. Her current relationship with Tom Hiddleston, once again, out of nowhere. At no point has a relationship with her ever seemed to grow organically out of an incidental interaction. They seem almost focus grouped ahead of time. It’s like her agent is running a dating site just for her, and doing a deliberately terrible job of finding a match.
Yet each of these two-month dalliances that consist of two-to-three dates ends up being the subject of one of her songs, or at least a rumored subject (the media loves to speculate on those). Most of those songs imply the kind of deep emotional connection and true heartbreak warranted by a long term relationship where she and her partner become inextricable parts of each other’s lives. As someone in a real relationship, this deeply offends me. She has never committed herself to the kind of partnership and bond that warrants such a level of emotionality, at least not in public. In short, she hasn’t “earned it” when it comes to those types of songis.
"When your Brooklyn broke my skin and bones" is also a play on words because saying someone looks "Brooklyn broke" is a slang term for someone who dresses like they don't have money but they actually do. Jake is notorious for dressing like someone dragged him through a thrift store clothes rack despite having the money to actually dress fashionably.
In that sense, it's also a tie-in to '22' because of the lyric "It feels like the perfect night to dress up like hipsters and make fun of our exes."

if you didn't know, the concept of a "twin flame" comes from the romantic myth that a soul is split into two halves when you're born and the other half of your soul resides in your soulmate.

the final nail in the coffin is the "blue" part because the hottest part of a flame is always the blue part.

Absolutely- it's classic performative activism where he's like such a feminist but then also has a 20 year old girlfriend as an ornament to make him look better; but also I love the idea that he metaphorically dropped his feminism and then that's when she picked it up like almost as if this was the genesis of her being a feminist
He didn't have a keychain that had that quote on it. He was tossing her the keys, saying to her, "[Screw] the patriarchy." Like, forget that the "man" always drives, you can drive. Then, she says, keychain on the ground, and on.
The line "the first fall of snow, and how it glistened as it fell" is also a reference to a Twitter post she made the night before her 21st birthday. Her tweet said: "Snowflakes are flurrying down outside and it's my last day of being 20!"
That line just guts me thinking how excited she was and how she was looking forward to her party where everyone she cared about would be there, and then he ruined the whole thing.
I will never get over the parallel of telling Jake "You never called it what it was" and then her talking about Joe "CALL IT WHAT YOU WANT." Like their love is just so superior it doesn't even matter. 😭

Apparently, All Too Well was the first song she wrote for Red, so it makes perfect sense why all the lyrics link back to all the other songs on the album. It's like she knew she'd have to cut all of it down, but she wanted all of what she mentioned in All Too Well, originally, to be mentioned on the album so she wrote all the other songs, like, making sure those lyrics were mentioned, just in a different way...omg. HER MIND!

It’s like she’s saying he was almost incapable of loving her, how she almost knew that going into the relationship with him but still hoped for something, but then he started showing signs that he was growing distant from her, but how even then she looked for beauty in him. That first fall of snow, those very first signs that you’re losing him, mixed in with the beauty of it glistening.
This is my favorite (new) line as well. I didn't get it at first, but I see the first fall of snow as the beautiful glistening beginning of the relationship, and the city's barren cold as the harsh reality that she's living in after the beauty has gone away.

I never though of it that way and WOW that line hits so much harder. I always made the connection between that line and “tolerate it” where she says “gain the weight of you then lose it” where “weight” is referring to the emotional baggage she got from the whole relationship.

Yeah, she really is. It's sad how some people still see her as a "typical main pop girl" with her hit songs.
They really don't know what they're missing out and how genius she is. Many people think all of her fans are just shallow kids or teenagers with nothing else to do but they don't know that Taylor has THIS side. Nothing wrong about writing a song about anyone she wants, but having a whole video campaign about pitting woman against Katy, and trying to find every big A-list name she could pull as me vs you, was whack.
What doubles down her pettiness? The fact that she backtracks years later and went out of her way to blame “the media” when it was her who was out for revenge regarding Katy. She also posts a picture of Katy’s Olive Branch gift, with the words stating she is sorry. Which came across as really childish. If Katy never had apologised to her, Taylor would be still taking shots at her (purposely dropping her catalogue release on Spotify the day Katy Perry dropped her album.)

I don't know if you guys addressed this concept or not but I believe the reason Taylor kept repeating " I was there " ( especially in the 10 minute version) is because he made her feel like everything they've been through wasn't in fact what she thought it was. She had the idea that it was love which he refused to admit and so when he broke up with her there was this gaslighting/ manipulation feel that he didn’t see it the way she did which maybe made her doubt all the moments they've experienced that were pure love, so she keeps repeating the concept of I was there I am sure I remember it in an attempt to prove that it in fact happened the way she saw it. I don't know if that makes sense but it's very striking after the short film and the 10 minute version!

You lot are the first reactors I've seen that really appreciate the line "The idea you had of me, who was she? A never-needy, ever-lovely jewel, whose shine reflects on you." Almost immediately that was my favorite new lyric because it so succinctly describes people who view their partner as a status symbol instead of an actual human being.
Also, in her SNL performance she changed up the beat during that particular line for emphasis and I am obsessed with it.

Nothing wrong about writing a song about anyone she wants, but having a whole video campaign about pitting woman against Katy, and trying to find every big A-list name she could pull as me vs you, was whack.
What doubles down her pettiness? The fact that she backtracks years later and went out of her way to blame “the media” when it was her who was out for revenge regarding Katy. She also posts a picture of Katy’s Olive Branch gift, with the words stating she is sorry. Which came across as really childish. If Katy never had apologised to her, Taylor would be still taking shots at her (purposely dropping her catalogue release on Spotify the day Katy Perry dropped her album.)
the line "a solider returning half her weight" makes me think of how she is trying to find her old herself but she can't because this whole love affair mess took away half of her, because she lost so much of who she used to be because of it. and she cannot gain that back but have build up herself anew

A serious breakup like this would really trigger those kinds of self image issues and the documentary placed the worst of her struggle during the Red/1989 period. No. I've seen a ton of talk about it, but I think people need to stop. She never said she had an eating disorder, but that she did have some disordered eating and exercising practices.
She was also incredibly thin before, but dressed in less tight and less revealing clothing before Red. Who knows? It's not our business to speculate when and why she began her struggle.

Literally saying that when snow first falls it's beautiful and glistening and exciting, just like when she was falling in love. But the snow led to barren cold. The more it falls, the worse it gets.
