I'm a US citizen purchasing a cat in the BVI and this is exactly the information I was looking for. Thank you so much.

Kudos for issuing the cautions on misinformation and recommending a survey. Taking shortcuts is tempting; however, as many RUclipsrs have demonstrated it creates plenty of hardship financially and compromises safety.

Did you watch the Sailing Doodles video where he 'looked over' a lagoon 440 for someone else in the Carib, gave it the thumbs up and it ended up having all sorts of issues and now they aren't even on it anymore? Would love to know what the owner thinks now - why not get a professional survey when spending that much money!

    • @donjohnston3776

Sure did. Gone with the Wynns videos are all round 'responsible' in terms of respect of money, people, safety as well as role modelling good judgement and use of critical thinking skills. They do have fun but everything is well balanced. I enjoy Wiley's comments & ratings on this channel. I think a sailing & RV show would fit in well on HGTV considering the interest of living in both full-time.

+Wiley Sharp - Let me ask you a question..... How do you actually know that the Broker is for the buyer and not the Owner?
I almost bought a monohull this year. I just don't know enough about sailing yet, and would probably kill my fool self. There are a few Cats out there I like, but I come from a fishing family, so the roll just makes me sleep harder 🙂
Anywho..... the other question I had was; Surveyors. How do I pick a good 1 😶

I figured $38,890 using the high numbers or almost 10%.
In addition, Wiley missed telling us about broker fees.
The other major expense is hotel and travel expenses.
If you don’t know how to sail, you will not be able to get insurance for yourself, and you will need to budget the license expenses which will include school, food, and hotel expenses plus several weeks to months for the whole process. Budget about $150 per person per day plus flights. Three weeks for two people plus flights (150 x 2 x 7 x 3 +3,000) ~ $10,000.
The high numbers from the video $39,000 + $0 (broker fees) + $10,000 (captain’s license, lodging, food, and travel) ~ $49,000 or 12%.

      @ek9772 6 лет назад +1

Wiley Sharp Catamaran Expert I took off the broker fees for the buyer. Thank you for clarifying this.
However, I am leaving the other expenses since some folks may not know this and budget for this if they want to get insurance, and they have no sailing experience, and I personally would not buy an expensive boat without insurance.
I like your videos by the way.

It's not a license...just professional credentials from sailing school to set a base line regarding competency.

So basically if we buy a 400k boat which is the plan. We would need about 600k before we cast off. I'm including provitions, outerwear the whole melon. I'm ok with that. Have to start somewhere and after crawling though umpteen 20 footers there's no way I'll stuff my family in one of those
We have small sunfish, phantoms and hobbie cats now for the lake house but we want to blow it out and visit the world. Money is an object but not this amount. Its doable. Get schooled out this year and plan for purchase next spring early.

Great info...thank you! Two questions (and pardon my ignorance on the subject)...who pays the broker's fee. The seller, the buyer, or both?
Also, would the survey include an appraisal of value or is that separate?

I have the rather crazy idea of buying a really cheap crappy catamaran and converting into a solar powered ship with a solar panel roof over the whole surface.
Can you get a fiberglass catamaran for real cheap? Like below 30k?
