Who decides the asking price of the catamaran? I see the most crazy asking prices on the internet/with brokers. Sometimes older boats are waaaay more expensive then the newer ones even if they are well fitted. Keep selling!
What do you think about the Bali, Balance or Excess models? Do you think they will hold their values? I have been a dedicated fan of your videos so your thoughts are important!
hi Wiley, thanks for the informative videos .What do you think about buying an ex-charter boat from MOORINGS? I know it will have a lot of wear and tear but the prices are so much lower than catarmarans.com I know the engine hours are high but I could replace the engines myself and it still seems like a good deal. I too like the Leopard 46's
Wiley, as a potential cat buyer (dreamer) your videos are very educational and fact finding. I live in Tampa and have been looking at cats for several years and cant believe how much the prices have rose. As a old crusty retired Navy SCPO, its my goal to fully retire in a few years purchase a cat and float around FLA and Caribbean like Capt. Ron. But damn are there any good boats out there that wont break the bank?
Thanks for quick reply Wiley, I think 250k is about right...can better deals be had overseas or is buying here in Florida just as good? BTW I watch your videos now all the time keep up the great work. I work at MacDill which has a marina so thinking that's a good place to dock, when your back in town I would love to discuss buying options.
Wiley, there are too many variants into the equation, however a private or "owners" version will always command more "$$$" over a charter boat - I bought 1 ex charter boat in my life - never agin I can tell you & yes it was an "ex Moorings" vessel. Ny latest boat is a well known Euro cat outside of what you mentioned & I figure I will take a 40% hit over 5 years..... But again it is also "requirements" specific
Wiley, interesting info on boat market. What are your thoughts on buying an older cat and doing a complete refit. What kind of depreciation would you expect on the refit cost, assuming a recognized brand?
Wiley, Love your videos and have learned so much. My husband and I are looking to order/purchase our first cat next year. We always thought we would buy a new cat (We are leaning towards the Leopard 48) but now we are considering possibly buying used. Do you have any thoughts or pro vs cons on new vs used? Our sailing goals are to sail two-three weeks a month in the Caribbean then fly home for a couple of weeks to attend to my Husband's business affairs. We want to make sure when we are on the boat we can enjoy sailing and not have to spend the whole time doing repairs.
I've just watched this again, and now that we're closer to looking/purchasing it helped a great deal to revisit some of what you said. Reaching out to discuss one of your replies below! Regards< ~Lee
Wiley, informative..thank you. We're considering buying a power cat that will go into a charter fleet, buying a new boat that they add to the rental fleet, and we'll use it often ourselves. Do these thoughts on resale apply to that situation?
Hello What are your thoughts regarding NAUTITECH 40 OPEN from Bavaria. What do you think of the secondary market? Grateful for answers. Greetings Anthony
Interesting. We are looking to buy a TPI 37 perhaps but have a hard decision to make. Buy one in great shape for $137k or one that needs new engines for $109K. I don't want a project boat but have no idea of actual re-power costs when done by professionals. Any advice appreciated.
Thanks for another great video. Just subbed. So why is it that people only keep cats for 3-5 years mostly. Is it that they get bored sailing? Do they switch to monos or is this typical of monohulls as well ?Just curious.
Are you filming this video from Sunsi bay? I am almost positive I used to live exactly where you are filming from. Possibly even the same house. If so, I've slept out on that deck as a kid many times.
Too crazy! I literally used to live in that house about 17 years ago. We had so many adventures through that forrest down below the house. Do they still have immigration problems on that beach?
Wiley, peux-tu ressortir une version sous-titrée en français s'il te plaît? j'aimerais pouvoir profiter de tes conseils mais hélas, je ne comprend pas l'anglais. Merci pour tes abonnés francophones.
How does a normal person get into Cat ? How much does one need down ? How does one go about the business of getting financing, I mean what do the banks look for whats it take to get arrpoved ? I'vedreamed of owning a cat for a liveaboard every since I was little. I'd liek to sail it around the world and see the amazing beautiful world.
I agree with Kevin ... there are so many variables! My interest is in an Aquila 44 (powercat) or equivalent as a live aboard for a single, 'commuting' between the Salish Sea and the SW US, Mexico, or even the Caribbean.
I need to know the same...do I need to start a charter service just to live the life style? I don't think patron will be that great helping out...just confused on how lucky people get to do this..
Another excellent video Wiley. I subscribed as I am researching on buying a cat when I retire. I have a couple questions for now. Hoping you can address them here or in a future video. As someone new to cats, what size range of cats could a couple safely handle or would be optimal for bluewater cruising? Also, is the market soft for cats above or below a certain length should one want to sell it years later? Thanks!
David, wife & I have a 49 footer that we handle real comfortably (had this boat comming up to a year, both of us are long time dsailors, but only been on Cats fir the last 6 yrs...... "Once you go Cat, you NEVER go back"
Thanks for the great video and information. Just subscribed to your channel. I have been gathering information and am interested in buying a catamaran. Would appreciate your comments on Gemini cats. What model gives the best bang for the buck?
I know you are based in the Caribbean, how much does the region in which you are selling the boat dictate the price? Seems like in the Caribbean or Med there is massive supply, is there greater demand in the South Pacific or on the west coast USA?
Wiley Sharp Thanks for the reply! I'm from CA and have a dream of acquiring a boat in France, sailing the Med, crossing the Atlantic, exploring the Caribbean and then crossing the Pacific. It's a ways off but something I think of most days. Best of luck and keep up the great videos!
Wiley Sharp Catamaran Expert Thanks for replying. I just saw in the comments someone asked the same question. Sorry! It got me to thinking though. Wealthy people are buying cats so they probably move on the the next best thing.
I think Dave Barry said it best: Never buy a boat. Boats are money hogs. Buy one if you want, but know that you'll never see the majority of that money ever again, and that's fine for some people if they have it to burn and want the lifestyle.
Rofl you make your money when you buy a catamaran? That is some grade A bullshit haha. I guess you are a good salesman ;) Interesting video anyways, thanks!
Wiley, you are the only one doing this thank you for your efforts!
Another great video Wiley, love to share some of them on our Business Show here in Western Australia
Thanks for a great video! I wish more brokers focused on explaining the facts.
Wow! Channel growing great. Keep up the Good Work. Best info out there!!!!
In your leopard example, I’m sure the second owner had to have sunk another 50-75k in upgrades and replacements.
Thats a fair point.
Can you do an updated version of this episode?
very informative, you have earned a sub :) keep making great videos!
Wiley Sharp I look forward to it

Very good info Wiley, Gracia's!
Got any recommendations for a first time buyer? I'm looking for something that can get me from Canada to South America on the Atlantic side.
Thanks for another great video. Just subbed. So why is it that people only keep cats for 3-5 years mostly. Is it that they get bored sailing? Do they switch to monos or is this typical of monohulls as well ?Just curious.
Thanks for answering! Do people tend to keep monohulls longer or is it pretty much the same 3-5 year plan for most people?
Makes perfect sense. Thanks again!

Is the St Francis a good brand regarding to hold its value? Tks!
Excellent explanation!

Yes please do! This is a question that comes up in our house all too often.

Mark Hambridge Beautiful boat.

Nice information Wiley 🙂
Damit wiley , all the boats I've been looking at all have crap sails ... now I know who to blame :)

awesome information thanks!
Great advice
Is there a particular reason people only keep cats 5 years on average? Seems like a major expense for such a short period.
Wiley Sharp Catamaran Expert Thanks for replying. I just saw in the comments someone asked the same question. Sorry!
It got me to thinking though. Wealthy people are buying cats so they probably move on the the next best thing.

Exchange rates: So depending on exchange rate, maybe it may be smarter to sail it to EU and sell it...
Thank You now I know I will buy a monohull.
Stop ruining the Party. Monohull Owners keep their RIVA or Pershing for 8 to 10 years because of their value. ; )
So They Resale Quickly 6month to 1 Year?
👊👊👊

he just means dont overpay. same as a home.
