Thank you for taking the time to produce this video. I haven't sailed a boat since I was five in the bathtub. I'm about to retire and am looking at getting a catamaran and learning to sail into my second childhood. I really appreciate the video. Thank you.
Thanks for this. I too did a lot of sailing with my husband on our previous catamaran but never paid attention. Now I am on my own I have once again acquired a catamaran and must properly learn to sail her.
Thanks for checking in, will tell Lisa. This is absolutely the reason we are doing these. Lisa wants to finally know what is going on and share her journey especially with other women. She will be delighted at your comments! Janet, keep tuning in, a lot more content coming on this subject as we sail from the Bahamas back to SC. Thanks so much for following us!
Thanks guys! I love how you've put this together. I'm what my 10 year old calls a Newb 😂. We're about to set out, and I've been extremely nervous about sailing. Luckily my husband is super experienced.
Lisa was the same way when we started. She still asks questions and has me demonstrate and explain why I am doing things. Watch your husband, ask questions. Study the terminology so you understand the language. Do not be afraid to say you do not understand, ask to help on everything so you learn. Sailing is so much fun, it truly clears your head so you live in the moment. It is also dependent on planning ahead such as navigation and most importantly weather. Have fun, enjoy the adventure. You are living a dream so many people have and never do :-). Randy
Thanks so much! Lisa has been asking me to do this with her for a year and we had such fun filming it. We hope this will help many others get comfortable with some of the concepts of sailing and language of sailing.
Thanks guys for the wonderful video! Lisa: I understand you so much 😁🙈 it’s so important to have a captain who gives clear instructions ❤️ Love the way you explained everything Randy! Didn’t know that part was called the “gooseneck”! Thanks 🙌 take care and keep them coming 😘 Dani
Very nice general overview for new sailors. I have just a couple additional comments. As I'm sure you know, not all cats are created equal. For example, many cats can run with their main while reach or running dead downwind. On these points of sail (150 or below), I nearly always run wing on wing with my main and genoa or code 0 if I'm flying it in light winds. The second comment I would make is that it's airways a good idea to keep the critical lines / working sheets wrapped on the wenches as well as clutched.
Very well done for your viewers who are not very familiar with sail info. This is important info for everyone & you do not see much of its without a lot of research.
was hoping for a 101 instruction, how ever you use sailing teminology 401 when left, right, front, back are what most 101 people understand. Disappointed, but appreciate the effort.
We appreciate your feedback. When I was much younger I was a Red Cross sailing instructor. I taught basic sailing and the first section in our teaching materials was learning basic terminology. You need to have a basic understanding so you can communicate aboard as well as also understand advice given by more experienced sailors. The sailing language evolved over 100s of years and is mostly universal so all sailors can understand.. .
This is just the kind of video newbies need. Thanks so much!
@@David-um2hs so glad you enjoyed it!

This is fantastic! I haven’t sailed in a few years and I’ve never sailed a large catamaran so this helps so much!
Thanks! We love to share our love of sailing and it’s always a pleasure to hear that it’s helpful!

Also check out our website under How to Sail. The Helm Station Basics is good, also Raising the Mainsail. www.sailingonlaventure.com
This is such a simple and clear explanation. Truly appreciative of you all putting this together.

Great comments! We keep lines under load clutched and /or firmly secured to the appropriate winch too. Thanks for adding this clarification!

Thanks so much! My wife Lisa has been requesting that we do this video for a long time :-) More to come along these lines.
Great video, put together well. I'd recommend all new sailors give it a watch!
Thanks so much! Lisa and I enjoyed making this video. We are hoping this gives new sailors and visiting friends a leg up when they go sailing. :-)
Really good work🏋🏻♀️🤟🏋🏻♀️
Thanks so much! Check out our latest video on the helm station :-)
Very informative, thank you
Thanks for watching!
Wonderful ! I think we will do a quite same video on our RUclips to explain the same things to our friends. Thanks !
Exactly, then they are more comfortable coming on your boat and already understand the basics of your boat 🙂
Hint: make shure you always have min. 3 turns on the jib furler, better 5.
Agree, and we do but failed to mention that important fact. Thanks! Randy

Does anyone know of a good book that explains this same stuff that I could study?
Yes, US Sailing has a series of books that are well written and well illustrated! Basic Keelboat, Basic Cruising are 2. You can find them on Amazon.
