My mom was gonna pay someone $800 to do this. I have never done mother mounts before but after watching you I’m am highly confident I can do it now. Thank you!
Those 2 side bolts were definitely a pain. Took as long for those 2 bolts as it did for the rest of the job. Shop was going to charge 1600 for all 3 mounts. Very doable DIY.
Great video and instructions. I replaced the mount in my 2015 Explorer with the same upgraded mount you used. I now have a much quieter ride. Thank you!
I just had my ‘16 ExSport get the mounts replaced at 80k miles. About 8k miles before it had the same symptoms of the hard shift into second gear. Kind of a clunking feel. So dealer did a transmission rebuild (under extended warranty). Fast forward to this last month symptoms never really left and took it again before warranty expired and this time dealer determined it was the mounts. Just got it back and it drives so smooth and idle is as good as new.
My 2017 Sport (3.5 EB) has this same old style mount. Been having weird issues that seem to match up with a bad mount. (First thought I had a bad tire, then thought maybe a bad CV axle, but all other signs point to this. Decided to pop my intake and battery tray out before ordering, yep mine looked just like yours. (Style wise AND condition)
I got a 2015 Taurus SHO, replaced my 2 lower transmission mounts to solid polyurethane mounts. Now I'm getting wheel hop and I think it's the upper mount causing excessive movement and leading to hard shifting. I've had it 2 years, and on every start up no matter what it always shifts unnecessarily hard from 3rd to 4th regardless of rpm at the shift point. Shop said the transmission and ptu are fine. Pretty convinced the upper mount is toast and the replacement procedure is idenidentical to your explorer, just I think it's a different part number. Great tutorial, I hope it straightens out my issues.
@@TheVintageEngineer I'll tell you straight up, I actually considered trying to track down the upgraded mount you put on your explorer but already bought a new mount before watching your video. I only say that because the old mount you replaced looks identical to the one I gotta pull out. I also got a gearwrench xl 120xp to hopefully make getting those bottom mounting bolts easier.
@@brentneahring2797 120xp the regular ratchet or 120xp ratcheting wrenches. Side to side clearance is an issue so pretty much only a combo wrench gets in there.
That’s way high. The mount I showed will be the hardest (about an hour), the other two probably take 10 mins a piece. So about 2 hours labor. Parts would be $250-$300 for OEM.
Great video and appreciate you sharing it! Question - What was the determination and knowing it was the transmission mount, and not one of the engine mounts? I own a 2016, and when you're cruising around 60 MPH, when you tap on the acceleration a touch, you get a vibration once you let off the accelerator its fine.
I had suspicion so I pulled the battery and the tray and inspected it and saw all the rubber torn. Usually the passenger side mount will leak when bad, and the under side mount is pretty easy to inspect visually
I have a 2018 Ford Taurus that I can feel the transmission jerk especially going into reverse and that engine looks to be setup that the as my Taurus it's also a 3.5.
At about how many miles do you start having problems with these mounts. I have a 2015 explorer with 92300 miles and it is starting to vibrate while parked and in drive. In neutral it stops vibrating. I have no issues with gears though runs really smooth when rolling.
Did you have symptoms of when the ac is on, it would “rolling idol” or fluctuate rpm’s? Mine drops to about 300 rpm when the compressor tries to engage. Nice video!
@@TheVintageEngineer My wife's '16 Explorer 3.5L FWD makes almost a hollow rattle sound to me. Like the rear catalytic convertor has broken loose inside the manifold and is rattling at take offs and high acceleration. But when I crawl under her SUV, with a rubber mallet, I can not reproduce this noise by banging on either the rear nor front convertor. I have been watching our top, right, front motor mount for leaking, because I know it is liquid filled, and it has remained dry.
I just found your channel. Outstanding video. How many mounts are there in total? Transmission mount, one engine mount ( drivers side), and a torque mount, is this correct?
I don’t do that on car parts as revisions just like this happen time to time. Best if you look up what current for your car at the time of needing replacement.

The replace all 3?
Crazy. You would have thought the Ford Dealership tech caught the bad mount(s) during the R&R.
gOOD vIideo, im about to replace all 3 due to vibration on acceleration, 2011 , i done replaced everything else lol

If anything it’s an upgrade. Didn’t realize it until later but this new replacement mount is actually hydraulic as well as being beefier.

Same engine but mounts might be slightly different because of the Taurus unibody. So double check your part numbers
Part # of new one?

96,000 when I replaced this one
How many mounts does a ford explorer limited have, including the transmission mount?
3 mount. One on passenger side (easy to see), one on drivers (one replaced in video) and the “dog bone” one underneath near the rear
Update? Did that cure the hard shifts? Mines doing same think it’s this or transmission..not sure
Made a big improvement on shifts and I could tell immediately when it start a difference.
Much appreciated, was just quoted 1100 for all 3

what was it ?

No rpm drops but it definitely felt rougher when the ac kick in with the mount bad.
This is when mine idles rough too. Turn the AC off and it idles fine!

How the hell you get the back bolt into the frame
I had to use a ratcheting combination wrench. That back bolt sucks
