I forgot to mention in the video that if you had to remove the knuckle, and because of that, the brake calipers, make sure you pump your brakes before you put the vehicle in gear, otherwise you may end up going through the wall or the door. Don't push the pedal all the way to the floor in the process. Depending on the age and mileage of the vehicle, you may end up replacing the master cylinder shortly after if you do.
Thank you, Sir. I did it the way you did. No short cut, and still one side was a pain to take out but it work out with some PB Blaster and 1410lb impact that made the nut spin (loosening). I replace both side in five hours. This is the way to do it. The shortcut just add stress and complications.
Just tackled this job last night and that bolt costed my sanity for HOURS ! I just put the wheel back on and parked the shitter in the garage lol Today we go back with some metal blades and give it a go!
What technique did you employ for breaking the ball joint loose from the knuckle. Will a standard BJ press work (enough clearance?), or did you free it with a pickle fork or a good swift strike to the knuckle with a sledge? That would have been helpful for DIY guidance. Thanks, enjoyed the video and the good humor.
Once the nut is loose the shaft pretty much falls out of the knuckle on these. They aren't tapered like most vehicles. I try to make my videos at least somewhat entertaining. Most videos in the "how to" category are pretty dry and boring.
Ha! 20:52 where's the hole? Gotta have some mechanic humor somewhere. I appreciate the steps shown here i'm sizing up a job myself like this and i'm kinda wishing I had an impact wrench
Haha I try (and probably mostly fail) at adding a little bit of humor to my videos, rather than the typical dry, boring how to videos. If you plan on doing any level of DIY maintenance and repairs on even a single vehicle, get an impact and a set of impact sockets. Even if it is cheap ones from Harbor Freight, the hundred or 2 you spend on those tools will be worth every penny. I spent years of my earlier wrenching days refusing to drop the coin on one. After buying one I immediately realized that was dumb. I now own several of different sizes and power sources 🤣
If you can’t get it to stick put a jack under to put pressure on it guarantee that will work…the ball joint will sit right in there and u can take it offf with impact or ratchet 4 sure
@@darkhorseautoanddiesel it was definitely a great video don’t get me wrong. I did learn a lot from watching it I was just stating you don’t have to incase someone missed that part. You video is definitely informative especially for the torque spec and tools needed.
This video came out about 6 months too late for me. Nobody ever told me to measure the height when I changed my control arm out about a year ago, and now I have to replace the arm again because the bushings went out. With the prices being what they are, it's cheaper to replace the whole unit rather than buying the bushings and paying a shop to press the new ones on
@@darkhorseautoanddiesel haha I did have the video to help with the last one. Like I said, the bushings went out really quickly, and the ball joint was just about to fall. That's what I get for buying the cheap part though
I just did my bushings in the driveway really aren't too bad if you've got some tools. I pulled them with a bearing puller and set them using a block of wood and sledge hammer. Did both sides took me little under 3 hours.
If you’re changing your lower control arm at home, do not follow this video. It is not necessary to take off any thing except for the tire to get to the lower control arm.

Thank you for this video, I have to do my wife's 2018 and this really helps.

The ball joint? Or the tie rod? 🤣
How did it end for you?
@@darkhorseautoanddiesel Ball joint, had to cut off the bolt with my grinder. Worked better than I thought! Smooth sailing after that.
Good video. Thanks for doing this. Love the dry humor as well.
your a life saver buddy thanks a lot
You're welcome, I'm glad the video helped!
You made this look way harder than it is.
Had to heat the heck out of my tie rod nut. Still tough to get off. Ford and their 2 mm pitch bolts don’t help. Good video.

Or put some PB Blaster on it

I literally just did mine without removing all of that.
If you mean the knuckle, I said in the video that you might not have to remove it.

Was that a mevotech control arm that replaced it with?
Yes it was. I had to log into my Rock Auto account to find out, but it was a Mevotech.

Turn the nut upside down so you don’t damage threads
The long bolt on mine is so rusted in place that the impact driver isn't turning it. Replace the lower arm just for the ball joint... Thanks Ford.
Same thing happened to me

Or whoever worked on it last pulled the threads

If your not lucky put a jack on it then ur gonna be lucky
