Ford Tractor Restoration - The First Steps A 50 Degree "Cold" Start
I put a thin layer of grease on the backs of the pads, top to bottom, side to side on the back of the shims--to the edges. This creates a solid surface sound proofing/dampening. The rest of your points are spot-on.
A few months ago I bought genuine AC Delco pads and had to spend about an hour filing down the ears so that the pads could freely ride on the caliper bracket. So much for OEM parts and quality.
I had installed my coil boots incorrectly and had a problem. This video totally helped! Thank you
Should you spray inside the outlet to clean off all that soot build up or not necessary?
Maybe, brakes need a "cleaning" maintenance schedule, like an oil change to keep all the parts lubricated and free of rust and dust buildup.
The factory only uses silicone grease / paste on the pins. The rest is dry. I follow the factory, not “daddy always told me…”
5:20 I can't get a socket to go on that bolt to save my life. I even bought a cheap one, cut it shorter, and it's still hitting the pipe right over the bolt (not sure what it's called). You're clearly using a normal 10mm socket in the video, but mine is way too big. Wtf do I do? I can get it to almost go on, but every time I put a little force on the ratchet it just pops off the bolt.
Best way to take that v band clamp off from the up pipes is to unbolt it and start the truck up before you get to ripping everything out works every time never will I struggle from that clamp again
Will be nice to clean all rust as well 😅
If Ford was smart is a joke, very poorly engineered IMO. I had a hell of a time getting this thing off in Wisconsin where rust is a big issue. The nut on the ball joint was a bitch, the 11mm top of the bolt stripped almost immediately…..uuugghh !! Also 18mm long bolt didn’t want to come off either 1/2 Milwaukee cordless impact would not budge it, it was not a fun job and both control arms were absolutely trashed basically the largest rubber bushings were just plain gone after just over 100,000 miles 😮.
Looks like you need new calipers not grease😅🤣🤣🤣
You forgot the face of the pads😅 come on man rookie mistake😊
I need to do this on a 2027 Explorer. There is No problem prying that side panel given that it is labeled “air bag”?
Clean behind the clips and use OEM or good quality shims. Not all shims are created equal. Even cheap brake pads like those are made poorly with rough edges that prevents them from gliding smoothly along the stainless clips.
Pins and pins only. Observe how factory does it when new.
Excellent description and very clear how to release the white plastic from the glass ...... must go now it's Beer time !!🤣🤣😂😛
I have 80psi on my low side and 150psi on my high side. Takes about 3.5hrs to equalise after turning off engine. Can the restriction be at the VD compressor? I don’t want to change compressor if it just the txv
If your system has a TXV, it could be that. If yours has an orifice tube, that being clogged can cause similar readings as well. Taking 3.5 hrs to equalize does make me lean more towards a restriction like that rather than a weak compressor. It should equalize WAY quicker. Like 30 minutes tops is what I usually have seen. Keep in mind I'm not an expert though, nor do I work on HVAC daily haha
I Moly shims before install on pad, silicone grease on the slider pins. I quit greasing the clips and now use 2 coats of dry graphite lube (I apply it with a small acid brush), that’s it for me.

Excellent
Love your style man...this is real world and real frustration...im a wrench throwing C word slinging animal when crap like this happens (pretty much every project lol) Well done.
I appreciate it! I try to keep my videos realistic. Too many "how to" videos out there make things look significantly easier than they really are, which could get an inexperienced person into trouble. I also make an attempt at some entertainment value as well, since most videos in this category are rather dry and boring.
If I wanted to swap the 4R100 back into the ZF6 donor vehicle, do you know if I need to swap engine wiring harnesses too? Looks like the manual truck only has 3 plugs on driver side fender well and the auto truck has 4. Thanks
You wouldn't have to swap the actual engine harness, but some of the body wiring would need to be swapped over. I can't tell you exactly what would be needed since I've never done a swap in that direction before, but with both trucks side by side I can't imagine it would be too hard, just time consuming. You are correct though with the different number of plugs. Be careful too if either truck is a 2002 or 2003. They made some significant changes for those 2 years and makes things complicated for electronics being swapped between them and a 99-01.
Those disks look like the High Carbon ones we sell. Awesome disks!

What happens if the seals in the compressor blow out and you lose all the refrigerant? Or the condenser or evap coil are cracked? Do you get fined for that?
Probably not, I don't know, I'm not the EPA 🤣 I do think though that auto manufacturers should be fined for it when they put out crap parts that end up leaking. Such as Ford or whoever their supplier is in the 2015 Mustangs and their evaporator coils.
The celebration burp was excellent
Mechanics? Let’s take it easy just throwing the coveted title around. You might as well call them bankers.
lol, the end is me the first time I tried this! You have to use the heavy duty thick ass zip strips
This guy has GOT to be trolling
I'm not. What makes you think I am?
@darkhorseautoanddiesel Oh, ur being serious... #1 Use dielectric grease or sylglide. That grey CRC is like the bottom of the barrel for slide pin lube. #2 Do not put grease on top of the shims. You are just making a dirt magnet out of them. Put a little lube under the hardware, after cleaning the rust, to keep out moisture and prevent rust swelling. Also, it wouldn't hurt to get yourself a dremmel with non-abrasive pads to knock some rust off either.
Great vid man - Im about to do this on my 2016 sorento. The engineering comments are spot on too. Thanks for making this!
Thank you!!
Whay do you mean by exercising them regularly?
Moving them in and out.
Do you have a part number or anything on the clutch alignment tool you need? I have a dual disc clutch also so not sure if that would make a difference on the tool.
FYI- there is no reason to remove the brake pads and caliper- just remove the bracket and leave the pads and caliper attached altogether. He did a lot of unnecessary work by removing the caliper and pads from the caliper bracket. Also, if you have a good impact driver, greasing anything is not necessary. Torquing it with your hands will NOT be this easy btw. Finally, freeze your bearing for 48 hours before you do this.
Removing the pads and caliper gives you a great opportunity to inspect all of that and make sure everything is moving freely. Also, lining that whole heavy assembly back up can be difficult, especially for someone with little to no experience. That's also a lot more weight to tie up during the repair, as well as a bigger object potentially getting in your way. So there is reasons to remove each component individually, however it is not 100% necessary. I rarely use impacts on pressing/pulling tools, and absolutely do not recommend someone with little experience doing it. You can't feel if things are binding up. Also you can easily put way more force on it than you should, which can damage the tool or the part you're trying to press/pull, possibly catastrophically to the point of causing personal injury. That is a LOT of energy stored up and when it let's loose, bad things can happen when shrapnel is flying at you at Mach Jesus. I do agree with freezing parts that are being pressed in. It might only shrink them by .0001 inch, but that little bit helps. If you have the means, you can put the part it's being pressed into in the oven at a low, but higher than ambient, temperature. Or leave it sit in the sun on a hot day right before doing the work. I must not have mentioned that in the video.
The color is Case power yellow brother. I promise
The color I actually need?
How about pitting high temperature grease under clips to prevent rust? I found out that it's not about lubrication, but filing the pads until they move freely. I removed all the rust i could, but the pads are still too tight.
Toyota says not to grease the clips. However, if the brake pads do not slide, a mechanic said to file the brake pads until they slide.
This video came out about 6 months too late for me. Nobody ever told me to measure the height when I changed my control arm out about a year ago, and now I have to replace the arm again because the bushings went out. With the prices being what they are, it's cheaper to replace the whole unit rather than buying the bushings and paying a shop to press the new ones on
That sucks! At least you have this video to help you next time.
@@darkhorseautoanddiesel haha I did have the video to help with the last one. Like I said, the bushings went out really quickly, and the ball joint was just about to fall. That's what I get for buying the cheap part though
👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
I am the same way. My wife tells me I am too picky. You got to be for the safety of my kids and family.
I can’t get the bottom one off
My employer buys not #1 diesel in the winter they buy #2 so called winterized fuel, figure that one out. I think they are just cheap. And instead of getting to run 5w-40 oil in the winter, which my Cummins is speced along with Diesel 10w-30 oil to run they old timers make us run 15w 40. Yes, we plug in block heaters. Nothing like cranking on the Cummins with roofing tar in the crankcase. My uncles diesels run 5w 40 in them during the winter and never have a problem getting them started.
That looks like a bad break hose also
Only cheap brakes pad make noise ...
Not true. I've heard factory brake pads with less than 5k miles make noise. I've heard the best pads you can get at local part stores do the same.
How many liters need to fill up ?
Roughly 1/2.
Awesome video. Great tips. Good job. 🤘😎
No explicas cómo colocar los cables en el devanador
That's probably the hardest I've ever laughed over a DYI mechanic video.😄
🤣 I try to add some entertainment value to all my videos, since this does tend to be a dry, boring category. Seems I'm accomplishing that goal. 🤣
This is a dumb question but how do you keep the engine from starting while you are turning it?
Have the key out of the ignition. Also, it's being turned WAY to slow to actually start even if the key was on.
@darkhorseautoanddiesel if it was turned fast enough what keeps the engine from starting when the ignition is off?
Well with no power the electronics don't work. Like fuel pump, ecm, idm, injectors 🤦
Perfect my man, exactly how I do it also 👍
I do damn near the same but i use dieelectric grease on the pins
