Before I married my wife, I offered to take her car down for her to have it serviced. She said she takes it to (JL) so I wanted to be consistent and took it to the same place. I should also mention this vehicle was new and she only had it serviced there. Well, the "technician" came into the waiting room and told me that "someone" had stripped the drain plug on the oil pan and it needed to be repaired (I guess a rethreaded). I approved the repair. When the bill came it was about $150. I complained that that was too much for an oil change. He reminded me that I had approved the repair of the oil pan. I told the "technician" to check his records. NO ONE has ever worked on the vehicle except this (JL) center.
Embarrassed, he waived the fee and We never returned.

@@Kazuma.- oil specs are about epa stats in the usa. As oil temp goes up, it thins out. If in cold winter environment you want a thinner oil for better cokd starting and lower max oil temps. hot desert or heavy load/high temps thicker oil for higher max oil temps. They do not "know best" they have multiple reasons on how they come to a oilcap viscosity. Just research f150 5.4's as one example, the better ford techs recommend u run 5w30. If the vehicle has more than 100k miles, with no prior trans fluid service, the shop will try to avoid servicing it. The reason being is the likelihood of your friction material has worn off from the clutch pack and now it is in your trans fluid. If you change the trans fluid at that mileage you run the risk of losing the friction material that is in the trans fluid which, in turn, you may start to experience slipping. It just becomes a bigger headache than its worth.

She has gone to those places a couple time, but no more. One place double filled the oil and it was spewing out. One place never tightened her filter and oil was everywhere and only 2 qts left in the motor by the time she got home!
She called both places and they offered to do it again free!
Now I’m no genius, but if they screw up that badly when you’re paying, I wonder how good the free service is?
So, when I’m not there to do the service it goes to the dealer now. Yes they cost more, yes they try to upsell too.

The drain plug threads might be salvageable using a tap run into the hole, if there are enough threads remaining to hold the drain plug tight enough to seal the washer. Toyota might make a bigger replacement plug to avoid changing the entire pan.
I'm not sure if that is the right gasket, although they still use glued on cork to insulate rockets NASA uses to launch satellites. The flames and radiated heat on the bottom of the rocket don't have time to burn through the cork before the fuel in the stage runs out, and the next rocket stage takes over.
It might be a good idea to get that differential oil changed if Toyota recommends a specific type of gear oil. When I changed the leaking axle seal on my old Expedition, I discovered that a local shop replaced the original synthetic differential oil, which Ford specifies, with a cheap, stinky 90 weight conventional gear oil. At least they didn't charge the previous owner for expensive synthetic gear oil. And just so you know, if gear oil stinks of sulfur, it isn't synthetic oil, which is virtually odorless. The 'natural' conventional gear oil is full of smelly sulfur compounds, from the crude oil from which it is distilled. If you crack open a drain plug, or fill plug, and the oil stinks, it is not synthetic gear oil.
Peter does it right, but don't expect some local shop to put the correct expensive synthetic gear oil into your conventional transmission, or your differential. They might charge you an extra $50 dollars for the synthetic gear oil, while filling it with cheap conventional gear oil. Gears and bearings will last longer when lubricated by synthetic oil, mostly because it doesn't deteriorate as fast when heated by friction. Ford used to put a metal tag on a differential cover bolt, which said to only use synthetic gear oil in them. They probably skip that today, since it saves them a few cents to omit it.

Good on/for you ! Sir. YOU bring 'old-fashioned' respect, dedication and an 'eye' for detail, with patience and good European (Norwegian) quality, like Volvo used to ! WE , wish you the best, from God, for weeding out those poor, underqualified 'quick lube' places. I operated a taxi for years, and one time had to get oil changed at a 'Jiffy Lube'. well, guess what ? (on Toyota Camry) The next time, changed oil in my garage. Wow, i had to literally destroy the filter, to get it to spin off. A long screwdriver, in holes in the can. Then, a chisel on the steel rim. Finally came off. The rubber gasket, was absolutely FLAT. ...anyway....take care ! from east central Alberta Canada.

You are Exactly Correct Brother! Don't take your Toyota to these Quick Stop Oil Change shops. Do it Yourself or go to Someone just like You. Who is trained to work on a Toyota. I followed your instructions on how to change the Transmission fluid in my Rav4. It Shifts like new. The Toyota Dealer did a flush with their machine at 76000. After the service it would make a hum noise as it shifted into 4th gear. I did the flush and refill three times, 10.5 Qts now no more noise hum. Thanks Mr Pete!!!

If they rotate your tires do you make sure they use a torque wrench on the lugs or do you just let them use the air gun. If they use the the air gun wheel will have different torque on the lugs when the brakes get hot and you hit a water hole could cause a warped rotor I always torque them my self this way you also dont have one so tight you cant get it lose when you have a flat in the middle of nowhere

Even oil jobs at dealerships has problems. U had a friend who had a Dodge pickup, and when they refilled the oil, they sprayed a ton of the oil all over the top of the engine! He only noticed, because after he drove it home, he noticed the engine compartment was smoking badly. He took it back and they power washed his engine (which can bring in problems) to take care of it.

The truck aisin transmissions don’t have a traditional felt media filter! It’s a metal screen and doesn’t need to be changed. It’s essentially a rock catcher. The only reason to remove the pan is to clean it and magnets. Honestly that doesn’t even need to be done with how long these last.

When I still paid shops to do my oil changes, I had learned to tell them not to even touch my tires.
Considering my tires would be hot, most shops would lower the pressure down to my cold pressure level. Problem is, hot tires are 4 to 5 lbs PSI higher. When those tires cooled down, my pressure would be 3-5 PSI low! Even Discount Tire/America's Tire employees do that!!! I even make the effort to tell the tech when rotating my tires not to touch my pressures because the tires are hot and I check them frequently.

My experience with dealerships doing my service. (Mostly I do my own fluid changes. ) They left o-ring from old filter. Caused leak. Used after market filter when I requested factory. I purchased another truck from elderly couple. Took to a quick lube here in Stillwater Oklahoma. They performed transmission flush and oil change. Used filter I requested. They did an amazing job. I was skeptical at first. At least this quick lube took pride in their work.

I've never seen a quick lube place do a transmission service by dropping the pan. Usually they have a fluid exchange machine that connects to the cooler lines on the radiator. You are right they do not have WS fluid. They will use a universal fluid and sometimes add an additive that they claim will bring it into WS specs.

Every repair depends on the person performing the repair. When working at Saturn, a customer came in with a Vue that had the VTI transmission (CVT). Transmission concern. Fluid sample was clean red fluid. That was not the correct fluid. Upon questioning the customer, they stated that they had just had a transmission flush done at a GMC dealer because they had a relative working there. When questioned, he told them that all GM vehicles used Dextron fluid and we were lying. I showed the customer the proper Dex cvt fluid and printed out the proper documentation. The GMC dealer then replaced their transmission and their relative was released from his job.

I work at a Toyota dealer for 5 years now. The people who change the oil are 19y.o. Kids that vape and blast ghetto rap music and there have been so many cases of: wrong oil, not enough, too much, drain bolts coming off. Tires coming off while driving. It’s low end people doing that work. I have a master tech who I trust do my maintenance. But I understand everyone’s concern. It is very valid. Nobody cares. Most people cut corners and even some have fun abusing others property.
