Badass video thanks!
good and tight german torque spec. hilarious, never heard that one before.
Great video! Loved that you showed how to do both front and rear diff's, transfer case and oil change all in the same video and called out the plug torque values. Good clear narration too! Thank you for posting the video.
Glad you enjoyed
Make sure you can get the fill plug off before you you drain everything out.
Didn't see anything about crush washer
“ Can’t joke like that nowadays “ 😂
Damn so glad you made this man! thank you!
Thank you! I am gonna save this video for future reference!
Awesome stuff buddy, always interesting to watch 👍👌✌
Great video! Prepping for this job, no fancy shop though...
Nice video and explanation. Thx!
Nice Video and thank you for sharing.
Very informative video. Just bought a 2015 4Runner right at 99k miles. Will be doing this soon
Thank you! My friend
Great vid!
This is awesome. I could change out my oil on my 1991. I haven't even tried changing on my 2016. After this video, I feel confident to tackle the oil and every else you did. Thanks so much.for sharing this.
Dude. Best fluid change vid I’ve seen on the 4Rnnr. Great job and great explanation of things. I just changed out al of the same fluids and the transmission fluid in the past month on my 2014 at the 100,000 mile mark
Awesome glad I could help!!
Did you just do a drain and fill? Or did you drop the pan and change the filter? I’ve been told it’s a real PIA to change it all out. Local dealer recommended “flushing” the transmission but I don’t trust it.
@@mgofferg6216 my mechanics did a full flush and new filter, per my request. its not that hard to do, but it is VERY messy if done yourself...dropping the pan, pulling the magnets, replacing the internal filter.
Spraying cleaner towards the open front diff fill plug 🤔 and not cleaning off around the diffs and transfer case before starting
100k more miles and all isgold
Great video and thank you! I'm having my transmission fluid and rear diff flushed right now in my 2014 4Runner SR5. Front diff and t case next. Subscribed.
Awesome glad to hear
Really good video / provide everything one needs to know. thanks again
Glad I could help.
Great video btw!!
Even took the time to show how to reset.
Lots of people don’t know how easy that is or
even how to do it.
Good job!!
Dude awesome video
Thanks
Great info! Digging the hat!!
🤙
5:56 “Score, found a 24, just like before.” Rap genius 😂
Good luck 👍
I've got a 2005 SR5 4Runner only thing been changed on mine is the oil many of times and backwash the radiator that's it 234,000 and still going strong good job Toyota and my oil filter is on top of the motor
You never had ANY fluid changed regularly besides the engine oils at 234,000 miles????😮😮😮😮😮😮
You better service your vehicle! By changing out the brake fluids, power steering fluid, coolant flush, transmission (drain and fill only). No flush!
And the rear diff fluid, also front and transfer case fluids (if you have 4WD).
Spark plugs change, fuel injection cleaning, air filter and cabin air filter etc etc are probably all dirty in your vehicle at 234,000 miles...
@@7150285 I wouldn't touch the transmission fluid now that it has 234,000 miles as it may start slipping

That oil filter removal tool isn’t fun to use, but it
does work!!
It’s a Toyota-bullet proof
FANTASTIC video, thank you very much! When you get the chance, please do one for changing the 5th Gen 4Runner's transmission fluid (passive drain and fill). Thanks for this video!
I will be taking to the dealer for trans service if I get it done
AWESOME VID MY MAN.....BUT..........how the heck you get'n 19.3 and I'm stuck at 17.3 on a good day with a tailwind?!?! Same wheels tires and lift.
Driving like a paw paw!!! Those were the good ol days. Now I'm happy if I get 16
Man that awesome that they have shop where you can work with your personal car.
Nice! Thanks for showing us is not that hard to do basic maintenance on such a powerhouse.
When on the lift and every other oil change don't forget to grease the driveline propeller shaft and universal joints - this is always forgotten and extremely important - there are 6 Zerk fittings to grease front to back - 2 to 3 squeezes of te grease gun for each one....
Great advice. It’s funny cause I check these after taking to dealer and no signs of them greesing them!!!
@@SirWilliamGoes Think about that before you bring it to the dealer for your transmission service. Then you can do a video on that DIY as well for the other guy who asked. Lol.
The filter housing has a drain plug on it as well. You would use the ½ drive ratchet without a socket to remove it. Every OEM filter then comes with a plastic plug that you can stick in to drain all the oil out. There is also a second rubber O ring to be replaced for that plug that comes with the OEM filter. All that said, I still make a mess every time. Lol. Oh! There is also an aluminum filter housing replacement for the plastic one that comes stock. I have heard they crack often. I replaced mine the first time I changed the oil. Cheap and worth it in most opinions. Finally, if you are willing to put any "clean oil" in the diffs, there are a few brands that come in soft packs. This eliminates the need for the pump and saves "menee hooours leeeataer." Anyway, thanks for doing the video. Good stuff.
Very helpful! Thank you for your time!
Don’t forget: it’s a TOYota!! Gutten tight! :)) we should always be able to trow a joke…!
Man I wish there was a diy shop down where I live in ga. It would make me wanna start working on my car again.
It doesn't look too dirty (and diff and transfer case fluids) is because it was only 5 years old...had it been 10 years and 100K miles it probably would've looked pretty dirty...
Great video, wish you could do the 100k maintenance on my 4Runner, I live in Cookeville
How can I tell if the gears inside the differential is bad? When I engage the 4wd on my truck, it make a grinding or clicking noise when moving forward or backwards. Lmk thanks
That doesnt sound good at all. You can empty fluids and check for excess metal but without taking it all apart and visually inspecting it you really wont know
Imagine a darn light 💡
I take the filter off with a monkey wrench. No Problem.
Great video! Thanks for calling the torque values.
Bought mine new and it has the same silly little screws.
Nice DIY there.. forgot to mention your next stop was hardware store to get that missing bolt :- ) I think it was..seems like you care about your vehicle. Nice truck!! I'm in the market for one right now. I'm subbing.
Did you get one? What is it?
Thank you for this! Makes me feel much better about DIY. ? - should you be giving a Shotski with the fill bolt not put back in? I'm assuming some fo the break cleaner had to go into the diff.
glad you found it useful. Best part about break cleaner is how fast it evaporates but so long as you don't pour it in there you will be alright.
I’m looking at buying a 2016 4x4 4Runner sr5 with 108k miles. Should there be any specific issues to be worried about?
Not one!!! They are great trucks
It’s always a idea to save all the fasteners from
the front plastic removal.
Saves a lot time during reinstallation.
The former owner, obviously had no clue.
19.3 mpg?????? Dang! Good video. Now just gotta find a garage when I can go to!
That’s around what I get on my 2014 4r limited 19.6mpg
They both lie my and most peoples limiteds are 14
How often is this needed on the 4runner?
100k for me but owners manual says otherwise
You can pick up an entire gasket set trough
Amazon. And yes, it is cheaper!!
Is the transfer case oil and differential oil the same? They are both calling for 75w?
One of them is different I believe. Look in owners manual
Transfer case calls for SAE 75w
Front and rear diff calls for 75w-85
I just got 2022 TRD OR so I have some time before gear oil changes, but thanks for the great video, simple, clear, and to the point. So if this is the first gear oil change after 100k, does Toyota come with regular conventional gear oil, or do they use synthetic from the factory? because if it's non-synthetic after 100k seem good enough? For the 4runner Toyota recommends a gear oil change every 30k but based on your gear oil looks pretty good after 100k seem every 30K over kill?
Its all synthetic. I cant speak on the intervals I wanna say mine didn’t say to do it until 50or60k but I had many folks tell me they always waited till 100k
The service manual did state to change the differential fluids every 15,000 miles if vehicle is towing, off-roading, driving in city traffic, or driving during extreme weather and temperature condition etc etc...
It might seem like an overkill yes but you can always check your fluid level and condition from the fill plug.
Good stuff. Was curious how Apples oils would look since you go pretty hard compared to most of us! Looking forward to a trans fluid video sometime.
The trans fluid has to be done with the machine
Job well done :D 100K on all the driveline fluids 😬
Toyota spent millions in R&D and that’s what they came up with 🤷🏽♂️
Really appreciate this man. This will save a ton of $$$ for me. Would you mind sharing the parts number of the replacement washers used?
I dont have the part numbers but if you go to dealer they know exactly what you need i think they were like 20$
Have you ever lifted your vehicle, pressure washed underneath it, and used some of that Lucas Tool Box Buddy on some of the components?
Na, just take it through good water crossings!!! I'm a bit weary of pressure washer
@@SirWilliamGoes I agree with you ... I'd be concerned about wearing down any seals with a pressure washer. With that said, I always get on my hands and knees when I clean my truck and just use a regular hose to spray the underbody. This practice and annual rust protection application has kept my truck's underbody mint, even in the Canadian winters, for the last 3 years.
@sensei - that's a great idea. I bought a ryobi 3 nozzle pressure washer adapter (home depot) with wheels to spray down the undercarriage after off roading. Then once dry, i spray pb blaster for protection. Im very happy with results but ill try that tool box stuff you reference. Spraying down the bottom is a must with the salty desert we have around socal
Great vid, I've watched it a few times. How's everything working since putting in the new lube in the diff and transfer case? I ask, due to the various debates on using non-Toyota lube.
All is well
Lol sir, that front diff and transfer case and rear diff fluids are ALL dark...don't expect it still could go another 100,000 miles safely/ideally😂😅😂.
Fluids breaks down and becomes thinner and thinner and becomes darker and darker over time and the oil won't be able to protect your diff's gears from heat and no more lubrication.
I have a 2013 sr5 4Runner do I have to change my front differential my truck is only rwd
No
What about the tender transfer case? Do I even have one since it’s rwd
Thanks bud! All good with the purple in the T-Case?
So far so good
How often do you grease the drive shaft joints?
Supposed to do it every 10k
How often would you recommend changing the driveline fluids?
Every 100k is my schedule but the recommended is more frequently
Im close at 30k mile on my 4runner will I need to do drain and fill them or wait another 15 or 20k
You're way good!!!
My Dealership (who I think is reasonable) just told me I needed to do it at 60Kand it would be $240. I'll wait until at least 100K and maybe do it my self. What did it cost you?
you said sixty thousand but I've talked to many of people that told me just to wait till a hundred thousand. After waiting to the hundred thousand I think that it's okay to wait. that's a pretty damn good deal if your dealership is going to replace transfer case front and rear differentials fluids I'd venture to say that you can't buy just the fluid for any less than that if you were getting the correct fluid. I want to say with everything I was sitting right around that or $300
Change diff/transfer fluid every 30k or two years
@@ZacTexCmight be a little over kill...
@@7150285 that’s when you are suppose to change your gear oil.
If I rarely use my 4wd, (but use it 10 miles a month as recommended), do I really need to change my front differential / transfer fluid as much?
I'd say 100k miles would be sufficient
Of course!
What about spark plugs? Love your channel
I'll be doing those next
I read for 5th gen it’s recommended at 120k
Gutten tight
The service schedule does not require this unless:
"Additional Maintenance Items for Special Operating Conditions"
Refer to other videos to determine if I qualify for special operating conditions. And you are correct I think the manual actually calls for it sooner around 70k
@@SirWilliamGoes My 2020 TRD Off Road manual doesn't call for it ever unless special operating conditions. Only inspect.
That’s wild. I have General rule to change it all at 100k regardless mine would qualify for the special use category but judging on how clean the oils were I would be comfortable going longer.
Noticed you switched from BFG to Generals. How ya liking them? Specially on the muddier sections of the trail
Video coming soon. Long story short. Meh
That’s a great question, how do you like the atx vs ko2?
My 2013 Trail has 98k, should I drop the pan?
For the trans?
I would just do a drain & fill.
You have to drop the pan IF you want to change out that automatic transmission fluid filter as well...
I've always thought it was silly to have bolts AND plastic clips holding that front piece. I cured that with a full set of aluminum skids and a steel filler plate in the front. Have you done a transmission fluid change? Toyota says not necessary unless doing a lot of towing. I'm kind of skeptical about that. Still only about 45K on my 2016, but bought in mid 2017 with only 6500 on it.
Have not yet
@@SirWilliamGoes do a video for us
Is 6.6 quarts 6 full quarts and half of the 7th?
Little over half yes
Transmisión oil change?
The dealer will do that as it requires a machine
@@SirWilliamGoes I just buy my firs 2008 4Runner 125000 miles, but looks really good conditions, but I’m not sure if can I do the flushing transmission oil change, because I hear people say the transmission will be damage if I do the flush. What you think about. Thanks
Don't flush it! Only drain & fill
@@4EverrBroke oh yeah, why's That?
Best video I’ve seen knocking out all the fluids underneath. Pretty awesome there’s a shop that lets you do it. Always want myself to do these things. Only thing I probably won’t do myself is transmission. I’m at 83k so I’ll wait till 100k. My Toyota charges $260 for trans service.
That's not too bad for the trans
My dealer wanted $500 for transmission. I guess hat included filter change.
How many miles were on the 4runner when you bought it? I think the diff fluids must have been changed at some point - they look too clean for 100k!
I bought it new!! I was amazed too!!
@@SirWilliamGoes :O Is there any chance the dealer had replaced them at some point, like for a 50k service or something? That's crazy!
@@TrailTapehe would have know it. Because they will charge him like $300 for the service. IF the dealership does it for him...
You can get those crush washers on Amazon for like eight dollars and they’re the same kind… just saying.
Sweet Ill check it out
Toyota quality.. Maintenance still required on a regular basis.
For sure
I swear I saw you yesterday driving thru Lexington, SC
You did!! We were visiting friends and family. Back to Knoxville today
Apple caught my eye, then I saw the recovery boards up top. Glad you made it back safe. Waiting on more new vids.
how much they charge at these DIY shops?
Depends on the shop. I’ve seen normal around 30hr
@@SirWilliamGoes nah nvm, im sure u feel like u need to rush to make the maintenance under 1 or 2 hrs to save money. dont like feeling rushed and i already bought daytona floor jack from harbor freight for about $120 and 4 3-ton jack stands from walmart for about $60, i like to take my time and get to kno my car personally
Good vid. Are you the original owner? There’s no way that rear fluid is a factory fill.
Yep original owner.
that rear differential fluid has been changed once before I guarantee you. the color plus almost no metal shavings on plug magnet is literally impossible.
Ive owned it since new. The only maint I have done is oil changes i doubt anyone would do it while I wasnt looking or for free!!
@@SirWilliamGoes Lies, I tell you, Lies!
@@hostilityy lol ok!!!
Save your money try to avoid Walmart at all cost they never carry the oil Filter tool
LOL, yeah right.... go to OVERPRICED Auto Zone
@@osanshouo1684 I don't go there anymore
This is great information. Thanks for posting this video. I have a couple of questions. How often do you change your engine oil? Do you go the full 10,000 miles on an oil change? Also, what are your thoughts on when the transmission fluid should be changed?
I do the full 10k. I need to do trans service I think it should be done at 100k as well
The manufacturer says 10k , I change my oil every 5k-6k because it's so strange to me to let it go 10k. But the manufacturer set the standard for the 4runner.
The original 2010 Owner’s Manual spec’d a 5,000 mi interval. I’ve still got it. They actually recalled the OM when they changed it to 10,000. I change somewhere between 5-8,000 depending on usage due to a lot of short tripping and off-road.
I changed my ATF at 100,000. It was very dark but not burnt. I’m switching to a simple drain and fill every 30,000 from now on. Use TechStream or similar, or the paperclip jumper method to read trans pan fluid temp. Pull check valve at 104°. Easy peasy.
Why won’t any of these RUclips mechanics ever service all the other stuff. Don’t forget the propeller shaft bolt and u-joints.
Because all that stuff is self explanatory and doesn’t need instruction.... well, for most I guess
"$21 bucks for washers." I bet that was the line you used with the wife! I bet you told her that the hat was free with any purchase! 🤣
Lol!!!!!
Lol
Brake clean and open fill ports don't mix... Make sure you seal it up before unloading the brake clean
Also replace your air filter, don't blow it out... Your choking your car out
Its a K&N all good also not pouring break clean in it’ll be ok and has been for 35k miles
@@SirWilliamGoes just saying it's not good practice is all.
average 19.3MPG ??!!!
💪🏼 killing the game!!! Na, I usually avg around 17
Damn it. Not the first comment :(
Yes, that really matters 😜
this post literally tells you everything you need to know about 5th gens.
www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/285126-beginner-fluid-maintenance.html
I know the Gen 5's are about all the same, but is this 2016 maintenance schedule the same for a 2020 model? Thanks in advance.
@@user-go6cj3zw9m if you look at the very bottom of this post, it lists the engines, transmissions and transfer cases used in all of the 5th gens from 2010 to 2020. The only mechanical difference in the 2020 models is one of the three transfer cases were changed. The 2020 models that use the transfer cases with the electronic dial used to use the VF2BM (from 2013-2019) but in 2020, they changed it to the VF2CM. I don't have any information on this transfer case, unfortunately. The good news is that this guide will still have the right info for the engine and transmission. Those stayed the same for the 2020 models.
It is an overkill to change fluids rear and front diff and transfer case fluids at 30,000 miles in my opinion...
@@7150285 you're probably right, but it's cheap and easy enough that it's good insurance for reliability.
Those skid plates 🤣
Lol 🤣 bout ready for the recycle bin aren't they!!!
