I have all the symptoms on my Ford as your customer does. I replaced the radiator also the cap because it wasn't opening. My steering rack was leaking as well. But when you mentioned about them needing brakes I started laughing. Because my brakes are rusty with dust. I fixed the steering rack and next going to check the thermostat and then the catalytic converter. I have been learning on RUclips. But if we had a mechanic such as yourself I wouldn't be fixing it myself because you seem like a really honest and knowledgeable Mechanic. Thank you my friend for making the video. 🤜🤛

I remember my dad would put the thermostat in a pan of water on the stove with the thermometer to measure the temperature. He would then check the progress for the opening of the thermostat as the temperature rose.

I have learned a lot from your videos. I have a 2006 Lexus RX330 that has the same type thermostat issues. I ask a local shop to price changing the thermostat and they quoted approximately $1100. They also stated a complete water pump change out would also be required when changing the stat. I ask them why since the water pump is on the opposite side of the engine. No comment. Hats off to you. Since then I've been changing my on oil/filter. Changed brakes, both front and back, hopefully plan to change the transmission filter and fluid soon. After watching this one video 3 times I'm starting to believe I can do it. Thanks and God bless you and your family.

You sir are a master! I'm no pro but I've made all my own repairs and services for everything I own for more than 30 years. Repair manuals are written as they are doing a complete tear down and rebuild not just doing a simple repair. So basically if you follow the book exactly sometimes you will perform some unnecessary task. The little drains on the radiators usually leak if I touch them,, so I would pull the lower hose off and drain coolent in a bucket. You do outstanding work! Yer video's are excellent. Thank you!

I recently did this same job on my RX300. Was only getting to 160. Almost the same exact procedure, except mine has a metal split pipe where the plastic one is. I ordered the gasket that goes there, but I never needed to separate the tube. I have it if it ever leaks, but I figured, why replace it if it's working correctly now. I didn't have to remove it, so I didn't. I see why they went with a solid plastic pipe in the newer 3MZ. Less parts = better. After replacing it with and OEM thermostat, I was amazed at the accuracy of the temperature. It was an 80C thermostat, and it reported exactly 179.6 degrees F after I checked to see if it was working correctly. It does warm up more than that after the radiator reaches equilibrium, but it still amazes me at the accuracy of it.

I thought my thermostat housing was leaking so replaced it with Toyota parts including oem thermostat. Had motor rad one in there and jiggler was of different design so I replaced it with Toyota one. I'm glad I did.

16:39 actually not too shabby for a salt belt 2004 vehicle. Yall down south or west with no salt issues would probably condemn this vehicle to the crusher 10 years ago 😂

the common thermostat procedure I was always taught was to orient the "jiggle" valve so that it's the highest point in the cooling system, of course that can be affected by the orientation of the engine itself (depending on models that use the same engine). Would this be consider bad advice to pass on?

I'm guessing this small opening (valve) allows any air bubbles to pass through rather than building up an air pocket in the thermostat housing. An air pocket would slow down the thermostats ability to sense coolant temperature changes.

I am curious how you decide which parts to keep in stock and how many pieces….how many other models engines does the thermostat work with? Thank you for keeping the content fresh.

Yup. Thermostat. Had that happen on my 2016 accord v6 recently. Weak heat, but no check engine light. Turned out the thermostat would decide to work sometimes and other times it wouldn't. What is crazy, with the coolant not getting to the engine at all, the engine temp never exceeded the middle mark on the gauge. WHAT? Man the honda J35 is a beast in efficiency. But changing the thermostat on the honda was stupid hard.
Also found that the reason the thermostat went bad (I think) is because the coolant cap wasn't bleeding air like it should, and air got into the thermostat after the timing belt/water pump change.

Any time I do a timing belt and water pump I also change the thermostat. Coolant is already out to do the pump and with the miles on the vehicle it just makes sense.

@@jimb8842 well I didn't do the timing belt myself so

What a pain, just to get to a thermostat, I remember the old American V8s and sixes, the stat is right on top and I have the 2 bolts out within 2 minutes ....without power tools. Some are more trouble, they are mounted vertically and is just a bit harder. It was so easy we used to change stats for summer and winter. We just use water and some water pump lubricant in the summer. water actually cool better than anti freeze but not by much. Some of us add plumbing valves to the heater to shut off coolant in the summer. You actually have a lot less cooling system problems without the 15 pounds pressure. But of course, nowadays we have Evans coolant for the really picky racers that boil at 375 F. Also use in piston powered (Rotax) drones.
