Gerrard was the only reason that Liverpool didn't end up in mid table obscurity some seasons. I remember feeling pity for the terrible load that was placed on his shoulders and at a relatively young age also.
He was a real Roy of Rovers type player and man. He deserved better and it's a shame that he didn't play with a proper squad at Liverpool but he will always be the Legendary one man that dragged us to the Glory of Istanbul and the F.A cup against West Ham and the footballing gods because luck deserted us that day. Only the pure brutal brilliance of Gerrard saved us that day again.

Imagine him today. Gerrard was the king of the high press before that was even a thing. I always say the best way to describe Gerrard was he was Kante without the ball. Never stopped running and closing players down trying to get the ball back whether they were in his own half or the opponents half, wherever the ball was Gerrard wasn't far away. But with the ball he was Kevin de Bruyne. Could carry the ball up the field, score goals, create goals, pass, cross you name it. He could also head the ball as good as anyone. He's by far the most complete player I've ever seen.

I think even with this amazing Klopp team, Steven Gerrard is still probably the best Liverpool player I've ever seen. He's definitely the best midfielder I've seen play for Liverpool.
What made him so exceptional is that he could do everything well. We was fast, his work rate was incredible, he could tackle, he could score a goal from any position amd from long range and he could head the ball. On top of that he took all set pieces and assisted lots of goals. He was even a good crosser.
I think any manager, back then or now, would want him in his team. Legend.

The most complete player I’ve ever seen! And one of the greatest players of all time. I get he didn’t win the league but he drove an average Liverpool team to achieve trophies that were beyond their reach and was up against a Man United team a Chelsea team and an Arsenal team that were full of world-class players and managers and probably the best teams of their respective clubs eras. If he played in one of those teams or one of the best Liverpool teams, he would have won league titles for fun. One of the best keepers and the forwards of all time in Buffon and Ibrahimović haven’t won the champions league but that doesn’t take anything away from them being one of the greatest legends!

Possibly the most complete midfielder to ever play in Britain, Id say its between him & Bryan Robson, both were fantastic leaders but Robson could bark commands at players n take their performance from a 6 to an 8/10 while he himself was having a 7/10 game. Gerrard on the other hand had to be 9/10 in his own performance to lift those around him because even an 8/10 game from Gerrard was considered a "Bad Game" for him due to his own previous success. To his credit tho he was incredibly consistent & is one of the best big game players in the history of the sport. When it comes to technique he was ahead of Robson, but as a package, its close between em.
      Most complete forward, Alan Shearer
Most complete defender, Desailly or Paul McGrath
      Most complete goalie, Schmicel

      @SPIDERM0OSE 2 месяца назад

Clemence, Kenny, Hansen, Rush, Barnes. All legendary world class players who would have walked onto any team in the world, all are at least on an equal standing with Gerrard.
All played in league winning teams, Gerrard didnt.
Which comes first, the chicken or the egg?
If Kenny or Barnes insisted in going gung ho all the time, would the teams they played in have won the league?
If Gerrard wasnt at Liverpool would they have signed more tactically astute, tactically disciplined players who would have led em to a league title, instead of signing players who could fit into a Liverpool team with Steven Gerrard in it?
Michael Owen was a great goal scorer but he couldn't have made it in the era Ian Rush played in because nobody wanted to see a team built around one player, which is why Robbie Fowler is a much better striker than Owen coz Fowler had to break into a team than had Rush in it, he had to come through the "Liverpool Way" & prove his worth. Fowler could have played in any Liverpool team from any era n scored the goals he did, Owen couldn't, you had to build your team around him n set the tactics to suit him, something Houllier did.
Do you want "excitement" & cup runs or do you want league titles?
Gerrard was a great big game player though & I like the Maradona comparison.

he was a sumptuous player but i have to concentrate on his desire more than anything else when i look at stevie, like lennon says here even in training it was calm if u were on stevie's side, we've all tried to be that or played with people like that and it is the number one attribute in football...yes skills are important but it comes down to 11v11 men on a pitch and if u haven't got that desire to work harder and the belief that you can smash ur opponents all the skills in the world cant help u...it's the same with klopp imo, all his teams share an out and out desire to outwork and out muscle opponents, there's never an inferiority complex with him, he believes in what he does and thats why he can rebuild his teams without losing performance, his players fully believe in him, he instills his confidence in them, same as stevie did whilst playing...the psychology of football is massively under appreciated, who didnt have that sinking feeling at the start of a junior match when the other team looked twice the size of urs? it's human nature and its the same for adults, its easy to get intimidated, stevie never did and he demanded, and got, the same from his teammates

There's solid arguments to be made for so many of them! But Scholes was always going to burn out early because of how much he played when he was young and him not having the physique to begin with, and Lampard and Gerrard are just taking the cake for me also because of how game changing they were standalone aswell as for their teams.

Gerrard was insane to be honest
Fair play to Scholesy being completely humble and down to earth because Paul Scholes was world class and won a lot more trophies than Gerrard but player for player Gerrard was criminally underrated and genuinely a superstar, I’m a Liverpool fan and looking back I thick if he did leave he would of accomplished more but fair play to his loyalty
Ps Paul Scholes and Pirlo are only two players I’ve ever seen control an entire game if they wanted to……..Frightening

Lampard scholes were great at a lot of things. But gerrard was great at everything's. Long range passing was pinpoint homing missiles. Outside the box rockets. Hardly ever missed penalty. Headers. Corners , tackles. Dribbling , fast . Both feeted . The pinnacle of a box to box midfield machine thats what sets hjm apart from the other's. He was stuck in the middle of 2 golden eras of liverpool fc so sad he never got the league came so close. However won quite alot of trophies and the biggest champions league final ever. He had a hand in every trophy he ever won

What if....what if....this was Stevie's legacy in some ways. What if Klopp had him in his prime? If Mourinho or Ferguson had got their wish to have him in their greatest teams? A lot was made of Ferguson's comment on Gerrard not being "a top, top player". We all know the root of that remark was a little sour grapes as Ferguson really, REALLY wanted him at United at the time when Gerrard considered that Chelsea move.
For all the skill and ability Gerrard had, his greatest gift was his ability to lead and inspire. He was a player tailor-made for Klopp and it's one of football's greatest misfortunes that the two never had that chance. Klopp has said as much. If Gerrard had played under Klopp, even those seasons where the team had suffered through injuries, Gerrard would have carried them through to more titles and trophies. It was never meant to be. Without doubt, the most complete midfielder that the PL has ever seen.
For what Scholes said about him says everything. Scholes said he couldn't have done what Gerrard did at Liverpool but Gerrard could have probably done what he did at United. That's respect.
