Here's my tips:
1. Do not commit to throttle on turn until you can see through it and know there's no cycles, animals, or obstructions
2. Do not look for cops in a turn. Commit to the speed because you will upset the car and potentially crash if you panic brake for a cop
3. Be choosey of your roads and time of day to minimize traffic.
4. Respect the double yellow
5. Be sure to have fun
All very good and exactly right. "Wait till you can see" is something that I learned riding sportbikes on curvy roads that are mostly wooded where I live. Even if you know the corner, you can not predict a new spot of gravel or the erroring logging truck. Also, if you take a wider line in (staying in your lane of course), and late apex, this will give you an earlier view through the corner and more room for error on the outside of your exit. If you do both of these things together, you'll be able to hammer out of enough exits to make you feel like you were hooning even while maintaining the appropriate amount of safety on the way in. Then build up your entry speeds as you know the road and your car, always keeping that necessary margin of safety. That's how you can build up to a solid 8/10th rip while still being safe. At least, that's my theory.
I must add that on a public road, one is not assured of the condition compared to a track. A patch of gravel, an oil patch, a landslide, all not typically found on a track.
A good rule of thumb is to always be able to stop in the distance you can see.
Remember the threat wildlife can pose. You will seldom see deer in time to avoid them but know they cross roads more often at dawn and sunset, especially near streams, culverts, and other low places in the road. Swerving or braking dramatically while at speed in order to miss a squirrel can lead to collisions or loss of control.
Great tips. I always assume a car is around the blind corner and take it easy until it’s clear.
Respect the yellow should always be #1. I’ve heard too many stories of people trying to overtake on a blind turn only to hit someone coming the other way head on.

I'm a huge track-day junkie, but there is still nothing that beats finding a great driving road. A track day is adrenaline, a good driving road is therapy. Keep it under 7/10 effort, stay in your lane, and just enjoy the flow of the road.
Seeing a road like this makes me want to buy a Lotus Evora and Honda S2000 so badly.

There's a misconception in Europe that America doesn't have good driving roads. Being a European currently in the US, I can say that's not true. They do exist, you just have to go a little further out of your way to find them.
I found one around a mountain the other week that was all weird camber changes and awful road surfaces... fully reminded me of the UK, except emptier. I had so much fun, and the scenery was just intense. Nothing quite like it.
I will say this though: the UK does have you beat on adrenaline. We have single track roads with like a hedge on one side, a steep drop on the other and the allowable speed is 60mph.
Every place has its beauty to enjoy, you only need to find it. :)

I've always been amazed at some of the roads you guys have out in Utah. Carfection also does this where they have just breathtaking drone shots of some of the best roads in the world. I agree with you 100%, when you find a new backroad with those perfect twisties...pretty much Pauls reaction at 6:20 sums it up. "Look at this...look at that! What a road!" is one of the greatest feelings. It is absolutely therapy. Take a beautiful drive with your favorite car and tell me you don't feel that much better afterwards. Great video as always guys, really looking forward to the LC500 video :)

don't worry, there are plenty of spectacular drives. start in cedar city and head east on 14 up the canyon and over to 89. turn left and head north to 12. turn right (east) toward bryce canyon and follow the road for miles and miles east and then north through escalante, boulder and eventually torrey. then right on 24 to hanksville then right again (south) on 95 to 276. follow that to the north shore of the colorado river at bullfrog and take halls ferry across bullfrog bay (the glen canyon dam reservoir) to the other side. you're still on 276 and follow it back to 95 then north back to hanksville and retrace your route back to cedar city. the vews are different on the way back. total distance, i don't know... about 600-700 miles.
if you want to add adventure (and maybe have 4WD and little regard for your suspension), turn east at boulder and follow the Burr Trail to Bullfrog. i did on my bagger yamaha motorcycle and boy was THAT something. i had no idea what i was getting myself into. utah has the MOST spectular landscape in the U.S. IMO.

Makes me despise Indiana. Roads are straighter and flatter than you could imagine. No hills, no curves. Maybe I should move to Utah!
They mentioned they call it a "scenic byway" so with that and middle of Utah, you get a pretty good idea. (also, anything called a Scenic Byway is probably a good bet)

As beautiful as it is on RUclips, on a screen, one thing I learned is that you can never capture the scale and just how spectacular these places are in person.
I experience the roads two different ways:
1. As a truck driver where I'm trying to negotiate curves and hills with heavy loads.
2. As a car enthusiast where I'm trying to find those great curves and unlimited straightaways.
Both let me experience the roads in different ways and both can be exhilarating and engaging in their own little ways. I love them both but also despise them as well.
You guys speak, and I keep smiling and nodding my head in agreement. All of what you said about going fast, but practicing caution, catching up with other cars - all are so true.
Best thing about canyon cruising is having the windows down, wind blowing through your hair, listening to the exhaust note and our scenic mountains 🏔 a combination of that is for sure therapeutic.
Agreed. Maybe it's because I used to ride motorcycles but when Paul talked about podcasts and music, I was like, Huh? 😂 give me exhaust and as much wind as the particular vehicle will allow. 👍
This video really captures the essence of what turned me on to cars in the first place before I was into the mechanical/statistical side of things - I loved driving back/forth to my cabin for the scenery, it felt like unplugging/meditation in a way.
When it's about the destination, I use my BMW. When it's about the drive, I reach for the key to my Lotus... Nothing compares! NOTHING

Going out for a drive now on some of my favorite roads in an hour and you guys have me pumped.
I learned on canyons and reservoirs, I love driving through them even though I've had encounters with 5 deer.I now drive a S550 Roush Mustang but I run a 305 square I do get more tram lining on back roads but it's worth it.. even after the deer.. lol great content love your channel
here in Italy, our canyon roads are like half the size and with corners like in rally. These roads aro so wide that they need high speeds to be fun. Hope you can find smaller and sharper roads especially for the Lotus. Great video and love the pure pleausure of driving!

this video is a great reminder of what makes cars most enjoyable: sharing the experience with a close friend, and getting away from society for a bit and onto some fun roads. as a life long auto enthusiast, now in my mid 30s, I've realized that all of my prior circle of friends that shared my enthusiasm are now deeply engrossed in their families. time constraints and financial freedom has removed their ability to continue forward with it. I'm realizing I've started to drift away from caring as much for cars as a result. I still have that desire to tinker with em and go out for enjoyable drives. I need some new car friends. : )

Great piece! Wish I had these kind of long, flowing canyon roads where I live (Northwestern PA), but most of what I've been able to come across so far are smaller back roads. A lot of them are tighter, with sharper curves than what are shown here, and most aren't really that long. There are one or two I've found that give a small hint of stuff like what was shown here, but then they're usually either not well maintained, or pretty heavily traveled, so you can't really drive them the way you want.

I have much more experience riding twisty roads on my motorcycle than in a car, and no track experience by the way. (Someday.) But everything you said is so very true. The joy of running a sweet backroad (hopefully the pavement is decent), especially a road new to you, is amazing. With or without a friend is fine with me, as I like solo riding/driving. Idiots that won't pull over and let you pass. Not running 10/10s, keeping something in reserve for the unexpected. It's all part of the wonderful experience when you're an enthusiast!

I am fortunate to be able to take day trips into the NC mountains or ocassionaly spending long weekends up there. The Blue Ridge Parkway is great for cruising but is even better as a transit road in between the dozen or more great roads up and down the mountains. And then there is the Tail of the Dragon and all of the great roads in that area. The biggest difference from track driving is not needing to blast max speed down the straights or needing to abuse the brakes to enjoy the corners. The best advice is stay in your lane, pass legally and safely, stay safely within your limits, concentrate on enjoying the drive, and stopping when wanting to enjoy the scenery.

One of my favorite roads is UT-12 connecting Capitol Reef National Park to Bryce Canyon. 117 miles of open, sweeping, smooth asphalt. Plenty of passing lanes, but also, not many cars on it to begin with. What I'd do to go back in a proper car, and not a Buick Lesabre...
Imma let you finish but UT-12 Escalante to Torrey is the king.

when I come upon closer traffic, I will, at times, be the one to pull over and let them get a big head start. Just wait for a big gape and pull out in front of the next line of slow pokes.. Works great on roads that don't have many cross roads.
Never had a track day in my life; instead a lot of these points are what are taught at motorcycle safety classes and stuff experienced motorcyclists do subconsciously. I’ve no doubt motorcycling experience has made me a better driver.

Experienced those exact identical thoughts/emotions whilst driving my E30 M3 Evo from Tongue - Lettermore - Inchkinlock - Altanharra - Laird- in the Scottish highlands. A most glorious mix of flat, undulating, open fast curves. It's as though God in one of his petrolhead days decided to create the landscape for a driver's road to be built on. Most of Scotland's roads are very similar to this in Utah. That last segment 09:15 can be swapped for the A924 from Bridge of Cally to Pitlochry.
In Britain we do cross the centre line whenever absolutely safe to do so.

What a fantastic video
Years ago I would drive up from San Diego to the LA area to do some great drives in Topanga canyon and Mulholland drive in my Porsche. Sometimes I'd meet another Porsche and we'd slice and dice the roads together. Now, in my 370Z in the bay area I like to do the coast drive on US 1 from Oregon to San Francisco, or the SR 142 through the heart of Redwood country and Anderson valley.
That was superlative! I admit it, I’m envious, please sign me up!
I'm not a big on leaving YT comments as they easily get lost in the threads. However, I can't resist letting Mr. Deeken and Mr. Schmucker know just how much I appreciate the content they produce, even if they never get to read my post. First off, I have previously mentioned that the roads and scenery are a HUGE part of my infatuation with their shows. You guys find the most beautiful, scenic and car-worthy roads on which to share your driving experiences and this episode is truly spectacular. From the drone shots to the in-car cams, it's expertly filmed and edited, along with a superb soundtrack, to provide the perfect 'Zen' feel to the emotions felt vicariously through your expert command of your own personal vehicles. I literally watched it twice in a row to capture the scenes I missed the first time viewing, even in this short 9+ minute montage. What an excellent idea, as other viewers/commenters also shared, to break from the usual theme of reviews of the machines and, instead, review the roads. Yes, I, too, wished to know what exact road you gentlemen were enjoying, but I understand your reasons for withholding that for certain legal technicalities and don't blame you for it one bit. Should you return to Colorado, my home state, perhaps try the drive on the "Million Dollar Highway" going from Ouray to Durango (or vice-versa) on Highway 550. It will push whatever vehicle you bring to its limits, as the hairpin turns are downright evil and the passes extremely high altitude, but the reward of some of the most spectacular mountain views in the State (or the whole country, for that matter) and some great historical mining towns along the way will surely make it worth your time and effort should you choose to reproduce a segment similar to this one again someday. Regardless, kudos for another awesome episode and all the behind-the-scenes work I know is involved to make this look as effortless as a casual 'Sunday drive'!

Really envy you having these roads in America. The typical British B-road is full of traffic these days, unless you set off at silly o'clock in the morning. Driving that Lotus on miles of empty road must be heavenly. Makes me miss my Exige!

Great video! I recently purchased an FR-S and have canyon cruising on a daily basis to keep my sanity during quarantine. I'm also in UT. Would you be willing to share the location of this road and your other favorite cruising spots in UT? I can keep a secret... :)
So far my favorite local cruise is over North Ogden divide, through Liberty/Eden and then opening it back up as I go over Trappers Loop.
I’ve been trying to figure out where this is. Some of it looks like Little Cottonwood but other parts look like above Fairview/Price.
Would love to make this drive, wherever it is.

Great video. When I bought my BRZ I was living in Denver for school and had so much fun just taking the car out and exploring new places... get out there where most people don't have time to go, soak up some scenery, just enjoy doing instead of thinking, bring a sandwich along and find a good shoulder overlook to eat it at. Good stuff.

BMW club used to have a driving app where users could post their favorite roads on a map and people could find the best driving roads anywhere based on real driving experiences. Too bad it is not updated anymore.
My favorite driving road is skyline drive to Alice’s Restaurant to La Honda then to highway 1 in the SF peninsula. Similar to a hillclimb road.
Now have to leave very early on weekends to avoid minivans traffic and slow drivers.
What they don’t tell you is that it’s a big risk to drive far on country drives. If you get a flat or any major mechanical issue you’re miles from home or a repair shop and it’s an expensive tow or long drive limping home....
Wish I lived somewhere with a half decent road. It’s all just farmland with straight grids in the country.
One thing I learned studying cannonball run vids and driving quickly myself...don’t pass cars/trucks with a big speed difference. Do as little as you need to get around then once you are gone and farther ahead then speed up. Less of a chance for them to think of you as a “criminal”

That porsche looks so easy to drive compared to the lotus. I had the opportunity to drive an 05 lotus elise like that one cross country a while back and i slept in it and its very uncomfortable

im so happy i watched this.
background: im the teenage asshole that speeds down roads i shouldnt be speeding on, stopwatch on my phone, edge of grip in every turn, braking as late as i can, passing on double yellows, basically treating the road like a track and comparing times with my friends.
this kind of made me rethink what im doing, id rather go out and explore more roads and just be safer and have fun rather than kill myself trying to shave off a few seconds. my mindset has been "ok, i can go 5mph faster here, i can brake later there, more throttle here" instead of "have fun, dont die, dont go to jail, dont piss off the neighbors" (who may or may not pull over for me to pass every time they see my car even when im going the speed limit)

It's what many ppl don't get; and why so many ppl are tainted about street driving. They say, "take it to the track." The problem's the lack of respect for property and innocent folks; competitiveness makes enthusiasts look bad if they put it all at risk. Put your bravado aside, and drive reasonably, all that's left to find is the fun of it.

I don't want to come off as a smart ass, but wanted people's thoughts on driving sports cars in the future considering carbon emissions, energy use, etc. I have an s2000 and absolutely love tearing up back roads and doing track days but I wonder if at some point I'll only be able to do that in a driving sim...
Carbon emissions from personal vehicles amount to about 3% of the world’s total. If we stop - or are stopped from driving personal vehicles it will be for political reasons only. We need to move all big business, manufacturing, and trucking to clean energy sources, and only then should we consider personal vehicles, though once we do everything else, it will become clear that personal vehicles cause no harm.

I hit the twisties on motorcycles these days more than on 4 wheels, but thinking of getting a sports car again. Each state has it's good areas and each has its own tempo of, how to put it, velocity enforcement. It is important to 'know before you go.' What is Utah like in that regard? Is there a specific speed that results in enhanced enforcement (vehicle seized/lost license/jail time)?
In Arkansas' Ozarks and the Texas Hill Country riders and drivers bring tourist dollars and, in my experience anyway, cops tend to be quite lenient if you aren't disturbing the locals. In Colorado speeds over 100 can result in lengthy jail sentences and other bad things. In Tennessee near the Smokey Mountains speeding requires a mandatory court date in the future. In New York's Adirondacks cops have No sense of humor whatsoever, etc., etc. I've never heard anything about Utah but the roads look great. If the virus ever gives us a break I want to visit.

A true driver lets everyone enjoy the road how they please and share it. Doesn't matter what type of vehicle. Drive calm and always be safe. You can drive a SHITBOX or a SHITBOX sports car.

Does your region not have more curvy/challenging roads? That vid seem more like a showcase of scenery.
There are definitely roads in the mountains east of SLC that have plenty of twists and turns, but the ones I've been on are narrow and turn so frequently that you can't get up any speed on them. But there are still many roads I've yet to drive on here.
Most people don't get it when I say all I want to do on weekends is to read a book and drive the nuts off my Lotus. Thanks for not most people.
