  • I had a rare chance to sit down and ask one of my all time favorite artist questions about music and the life of a superstar. Sly Stone is my Cousin. He is as real as it gets.
    The Funk that I do is inspired by Sly stone & George Clinton. I've sat in a room with them and asked all kinds of questions. They are great mentors and never sugar coated anything. bit.ly/Manifesting_the_funk

    Wow! SLY IS ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITES!! Tha ks for this window into his world. Amazing! Not a month goes by without him and the family rocking out my house. I wish more people were into unity these days. The script has seemed to flip to devision being the "it" thing. God bless Sly and you for all the great things you give the universe. We MUST unite now. It feels too late but i know the big man has a plan amd that it is possible.

      Cori, don't know you, but we share the same thoughts. This world is great, but it's negative evil folk who ruin it for those of us who just want to get along and praise the creator for the blessings. I believe that there will be a better.... Some of us got a sample of that when we were kids ✌🏽

    Proud to say that, as a 8 year old, I had the unique gift of sitting on my stingray bike in Sly's fathers driveway on the corner of DeSoto and Urbano Drive in San Francisco's Ingleside Terrace district, and listening to Sly and the Family rehearse every week for years. I lived on Urbano Drive and didn't know that they were famous, but these young adults were the funkiest, coolest, and kindest people this young kid had every known. They were my neighbors, and I was the only person out there listening everytime. Cynthia was always SO nice to me, and Sly was the coolest. I learned from this group before I learned to really play keys. I thought of them each time I played on Arsenio Hall, and I would TESTIFY that SLY influenced me to be free-thinking and unlimited with the possibilities of sound, Anything goes if you feel it. -Stevio Rome

As I could describe everything about the location, their vehicles, house, etc., I doubt that Sly would remember me after 50+ years, but I'd surely ask him. These were likely, the best days of his life. Ironically and over 20 years later, a guitar friend brought Freddie Stone to my studio in the Bayview district of S.F. Freddie is a master of the funk and I am witness.

    After having watched this particular video a couple of times, it seems clear to me that something happened to Sly shortly after this video was recorded. He still had a deep and powerful voice and he was articulate and his thoughts flowed and made sense. When you watch anything from 2011 onwards (after this video was made), it's a DRASTIC change. His voice is gone. It's pretty much a hoarse whisper and sadly so is his mind and thoughts. He has trouble putting a sentence together, has great difficulty remembering what he was saying and seems very disoriented, lost and confused, as though he either had a major overdose/bad trip which did some serious damage to both his vocal chords and mental faculties, or he's experienced Alzheimer/dementia. Either way, the contrast between this Sly and the one from 2011 onwards is scary different. It's as though he is a completely different person.

    • @sstraxx
      @sstraxx 7 лет назад +9

      Solid observation, one that I hadn't really observed being so drastic & rapid. I remember him in the eighties being on David Letterman and doing a duet with Jesse Johnson, and he was in fine form. I'd always wondered how we change from that, just in a matter of 10-15 years to something else. But you're correct, here ,he also seems very coherent and lucid. Even though a huge fan, I hadn't really peeped how quickly things seems to escalate. He seems extremely shaky presently. A sad thing to see...... you always want to see that genius, and that spark again.

      He's stil Sly though. Focus on that. People get old and frail. He's blessed to still be alive after all the junk he's used. He's still here. As a matter of fact it's the crack smokers that tend to live the longest. Look at all the ones we've lost. No need to mention names. But guys like Sly, George Clinton are still around. That's gold to me. All the dope fiends are dead though.

    Sly started the mixed thing as far as interracial band mates was back in Vallejo ca, the viscanes in 1960/61 ,the consist of whites ,black, Philippino .this was a group not session musicians it's a big difference in becoming socially acceptable in society doing that time the great Booker T crew did more session work and look at differently their grooves were tight and fit at that period of time .Stone on the other hand drove the industry crazy & confused because they didn't know how to label them they had booked T vibe , James brown watered down ,Beatle/Dylan lyrics never direct very tricky messages it was like his music was talking to an Chinese, Latino, or the Klan .like George Clinton wants said his music was universal.
