Cavett isn't an ahole, he's just always looking to get a laugh, that's his job. Letterman does the same thing. Stevie is also being humorous in his own way.

    • @CheckMate657879
      @CheckMate657879 10 лет назад +9

The only thing is that what Cavett's doing isn't funny. Stevie looks as though he didn't want to flounder in the interview and did his best to maintain some control of it. Cavett didn't do a good job of holding the reigns steady.

Bruhh back then! Dark humor was normal (although theres no dark humor mentioned in this video)! My point is, people back then weren’t as sensitive as most are now! My father always told me this generation is filled with weak/ soft hearted people! Which of course is not necessarily bad! But trust me, theres no rudeness in this video.

agreed, it was a good interview, not crappy at all. And I'd say that Cavett was a lot better than letterman and o-brien. His interviews, even the shorter ones, got so much more in depth and had so much more realness to them than more recent television talk shows would even allow.

This was before his classic period though. From music of my mind on he wrote or cowrote (his then wife syreeta wright would help him with lyrics on some songs) every lyric on every album as well as the create the music composition and arrangement (as well as play a majority of the instruments on the albums). He was still developing into the genius he became.

He also continued to work with Paul Riser even into 1980, having him arrange some on 'Hotter Than July'. So those relationships were good and lasting! He and Paul KILLED it together when he was only 17/18 on the For Once in My Life album. Stevie's harmonies coming to fruition but still in the Motown umbrella... truly unique and beautiful time for Stevie!

And what about Jeff Beck too. . there’s lots. I just noticed you included SITKOL . . so many more musicians and writers with that album.

I'm sorry I took life for granted when I was young. Not only did we have real music from the likes of Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Miles Davis, Earth Wind and Fire, etc. but we also had civil discourse. I was a kid who loved to watch Cavett, David Suskind, Black Perspective on the News (Tony Brown), Firing Line (William F. Buckley), and Phil Donahue, among others. Now we've got the crappy faux news (FOX) along with MSNBC and CNN. There's no honest discourse and no unbiased news sources.

So true. If one was fortunate to come up on Donahue and Tony Brown and the music of Stevie and Earth Wind and Fire, then today's entertainment, rather anti-tainment, IS going to come up short and disappoint. But, the good news is that sooner than later that quality of the '60s-late 1980s WILL return. Truly. This is after all LIFE, and life is nothing but a DIVINE MOVIE playing in REAL TIME. The present phase of the movie, called END-TIMES, is almost over. Whew! Shalom.

I missed a grand chance to see Ray Charles live in 1995. Saw the ads for him coming to town and didn't attend. I wish I could redo it all. It would have been great to have seen Stevie Wonder chatting like this as, although all of his songs were heard on the radio and TV, we never got the chance to see him chat informally in the way US audiences did. In later years, UK Beatles fans also missed out on the interviews John Lennon gave but, thanks to RUclips, many of them have been posted. Brilliant to see my childhood heroes again, but from a different perspective and, in this case, Stevie Wonder, he looks completely at home, and I suspect Dick Cavett took the time to make him feel at ease before the cameras rolled. I always liked Cavett. I think that in general he usually came off as genuine in terms of respect, or interest / curiosity, but his style of humor didn't always mesh with everyone. Despite his first name, I never thought of him as one.

The title of this video is a troll job. This is regular, normal Dick Cavett. Perhaps he's an acquired taste now, but back in the day he had the least constrained interview format of any show in the world, including the Tonight Show.
And Stevie doesn't just keep up with Cavett, he upends him and forces him to pursue different lines of questioning. Great clip, OP.

Dick Cavett is one of the pioneers of talk shows and a terribly shy man. I absolutely adore and respect him for how he handled his career with nothing but good sense about people and creativity for a foundation.

  • @yellingelk

All you people accusing Cavett of being racist checkout the doco about Hendrix on his show. Plus, as for his being uncool, he used to tear strips of himself and never pretended to be anything near as hip as the artists he had on his show, he loved Janis, Jimi and all the guests he had on his show and never put them down for cheap entertainment.

Dick Cavett was an asshole here with Stevie and to his credit as a gentleman Stevie was polite and humorous the whole way through! I have seen plenty of other interviews and he was great with his guests, like Hendrix.
If you want to see Dick put in his place.. watch the Marlon Brando interview where he gets owned!

Why would he travel? What’s the point? Maybe to try the food? Needless to say he’s not blind. All part of the show. A blind man is interesting and sets him a part from those that can see. It’s show business.

I guess the new album he's talking about is "Where I'm Coming From". Is that right? I've not heard that one, but based on the great albums he was putting out at that time I'm sure it was good. And just think - the world still had not heard the miracles of "Innervisions" and "Songs in the Key of Life" and "Talking Book". That's amazing.
