I still remember my grandmother growing horehound by the small spring. She would make cough drops every year. I was very young but it's a memory that stays with me.
I haven't research this but if you can find a old recipe book hard tack candy might work just substitute horehound I haven't watched the video yet but this might be what she used as a base back in the day. I have made the hard tack candy from Joy Of Cooking 1960's. In fact I'm going to go look for it and see if there is a recipe in it. Anna In Ohio
I did find it. Unfortunately we can't snap shot on here but I'll try to write it out if anyone is interested. Oh and it does use the leafs and stems.Anna In Ohio.
Horehound Candy 2 ½ pounds Make a infusion of: 8 cups boiling water 1 ½ quarts loosely pack horehound leaves and stems Steep covered for 20 minutes. Drain and discard leaves and stems. To 2 quarts of this bitter dark brew add: 4 cups of sugar 1 ¼ cups dark cane sugar 1 tbs butter ( 1 tsp cream of tarter) Cook these ingredients until they reach the hard crack stage 300 degrees. Skim off any scum. Pour in to a buttered 15 X 10 X 1 inch pan and score in to pieces before it sets. Allow to cool. I would look around in the craft stores or online and find silicone candy molds like peanut molds something like that and spray with cooking oil if it was me. It doesn’t say here but having made similar hard tack definitely dust these with sugar once they are done and ready so they don’t stick together when storing.
I really want to grow cloves. I was reading sooooo many medicinal benefits that are amazing. I love the taste of clove & honey tea. It really truly numbed my infected tooth/gum pain & killed those germs & infection was gone in 2 days after using 3 times a day. Makes a great mouthwash too.
I love cloves and use them as well as the oil a LOT. I keep meaning to look into growing them as I am totally unsure if they would grow here but you have reminded me to do that so off I go right now! ha
Discovered horehound while riding my bike. Used my phone ap to help identify the plant. I'll watch more videos about it to help make sure I have the right one. Good to know what you can forage. I've found cleavers, chickweed, milk thistle, and other medicinal plants.
GM Heidi ☕️. Well another plant to look forward to planting. I have several mints, just because they grow well in my high desert sand lol. Always wonderful to share my morning coffee with you ☕️ Have a wonderful day 👵🏻👩🌾❣️
Typical of the mint family, it is invasive, but is easily controlled with digging and with young plants can be pulled. I mix it with other herbs and use in a tea as well as put the leaves (crushed of chopped) into raw honey and use that way for a throat coat and cough easier.
I like bitter, sour, and tart. I love a little horehound in a tea. The lozenges I eat as candy. You can drop a lozenge in the pot of tea, too. There’s prolly not enough actual horehound in them to make a difference, but it tastes good. :)
I learn so much watching your videos Heidi! And most of it was stuff I didn't know that I needed to know! lol I really appreciate the time and effort you spend making these videos. Phil
My favorite herb when it comes to curing many ailments. You're correct it's very bitter but that can be adjusted. I dried mine up this past summer and have it in my canning jars. Thanks for sharing.
When we lived in VA, I had a plant out front that I started from seed, but never used. When I was weeding the garden, I accidentally pulled a small stem out. I ended up planting it in a pot and it grew. I brought it with me to AR and planted it in the mint bed. It grew fabulously! I just harvested a few weeks ago and jarred it up dried. The remaining plant should do well.
Hidy! This has got to be the 3rd time this month ive looked up a super specific thing and you have a video that comes up. I love your content, thankyou for making these!
I grew Horehound from seed last year. it did really well and I transferred to the garden, Hopefully will survive it's first winter. I can't wait to try your recipe for the syrup. Thank you 🙏
I buy horehound candy which is quite bitter too, but it breaks up the phlegm really well and soothes my throat . I'm going to try to grow it next year and try my hand at making my own candy drops. If you have a recipe for that please let us know. Thanks!
No, I do not have my own recipe on making the lozenges. I have considered it and tried one at one point but the problem I have is the cooking down of the honey in order to make them which nullifies the benefits, this is why I make a syrup instead
Liz Workman I do the same thing. I have been battling built up phlegm for about a month and I suck on Horehound candies all day usually about 4 or 5 a day. And I work for a call center. (at home) and am on the phone all day so it really helps.
Thank you for the informacion, I rescued lots of plants from my friend's backyard and planted them in my yard I only did that because I noticed lots of bees I didn't know about the all the benefits.
My grandma always had horehound candies that all of us loved. Fast forward to 2021 I just happened to come across seeds on Baker Creek. I got so excited as I thought of grandma and decided to grow some to make lozenges . Out of a whole pack of seeds I am now babying three small starts. . I gather they grow slow? Anyway I’m thrilled to have come across your channel as I had no idea how many uses for this herb that there is. 👍🏼❤️🥰
Most plants in the mint family can have low germination rate on seeds and then start out slowly. Mine did. But once established, they will then take off and do great. Usually in the second year
We always kept horehound candy in the winter. It is a cold and respiratory treatment that was commonly used here in Tennessee. Never considered it to be bitter. I guess it is all on what you are accustomed to. I still keep horehound and make horehound candy each year. Great remedy.
I would assume a lot of the bitterness is removed in the cooking process and the sweetness of whatever sugar is being used (and other spices) is helping to cover it up
I never thought of horehound as a candy. It was always used as a sore throat lozenges. On the other hand the cherry lozenges were considered "candy". ( grandmother said it was junk)
I wonder if it grows wild here in Central Texas? I have health problems (hypothyroidism...which causes elevated cholesterol) so I'm always afraod stuff will interact with my medication. 😬 I love foraging and learning about plants. My God truly provides! HalleluYAH!
I look a bit congested? I do not recall saying I was congested (not that it never happens from time to time)...I said I HAD a sore throat for less than a day, the syrup took care of it within a half hour
Thank you for this video:) I have never used horehound but I did learn about it being medicinal and good for coughs. I appreciate the information and I might need to grow this next year:)
Currently have comfrey, yarrow, & plantain oil inspired from your recent video. I have a bunch of other herbs I've grown thanks to you. Any other things else I can add to make a salve later? What about self heal ? Or any of my mints? I lost all my dandelion flowers I had dried in a dog accident lol.
Horehound is new to me and am eager to know more about it. I can't identify it if I see one. I need to be able to identify it, know the different recipes and the cough syrup

Hi Heidi, Just found your channel not too long ago. Appreciate your well put together videos. My question is would you have any recommendations in regards to herbs that I could use to heal macula dystrophy? Not to be confused with degeneration. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
