yes. in Germany after the 2.WW it was very commonbas a supplement coffee. And still we have a "corn caffee" where chicory is added fir the taste. It is a kids coffee. I like the shoots. Fresh small cuts mixed with a small can of mandarins is a very tasty and healthy, especially during cold times, preventing colds. Other recipe i use it for i fry it with a lil water added. It is one of my favorite simple dishes :-)

Chicory volunteered along our driveway a few years ago, I've been collecting seeds ever since. I just couldn't decide where I wanted a patch of it, since it self-seeds so profusely! Well, I found a spot, and this fall I will sow some seeds to overwinter in that spot. We'll see what we get next spring!
I love putting some stems of the flowers in my homestead bouquets; such a pretty color.

I can't/ won't drink coffee so dandy blend is my go too. I highly recommend sprinkling it over vanilla ice cream! I use it mostly in goats milk with vanilla stevia! Move over star bucks!!
I discovered chicory growing in the field next to me. I am so excited! I lived in Louisiana for a few years and love the roasted root added to my coffee.
We boil the leaves with dandelions an eat them like warm or cold salad. When serve drizzle with olive oil, S/P and lots of lemon juice. They are delish! Eat as side dish to chicken, fish, meat, even eggs. I also love the water juice as savory tea with the same things as I put in the salad. 😋
I grow chicory as much for the beauty of the blossoms as for any practical use. I love the Cafe' du Monde style coffee with chicory, but I admit I've not tried making this myself yet. My clump of chicory has been going strong for about 6 years now. Slowly increases in my hard clay native soil, and thinking about trying to dig up any roots is a daunting idea! I've heard it can be rooted from tender cuttings, but again, not something I've yet experimented with. I've added the fresh blossom petals scattered lightly to salads as a nice bitter note and a beautiful touch of a particular shade of blue. They really go well with bleu cheese!
The leaves make a good addition to a pot of stewed mixed greens. If you can grow chicory in your climate, it's a worthwhile addition to your perennial back border, in my opinion. Options are never a bad thing! Just remember you'll probably want to prune it into a shrub or a small tree, like a Rose of Sharon, which I plant mine alongside. Those two plants seem to get along well and compliment each other visually.
The areas where we cleared Yellow Pines now have massive amounts of Chickory growing. Thanks for the tutorial.

Hello Heidi, I'm from northern illinois and I think this grows along the roadsides. However I will research it further and, also find some growing organically. Also I dry most of my herbs in this huge black mesh drying rack . I got on Amazon for about 25.00 it's great and uses no electricity. Which is a huge plus with me. Blessings.
Heidi, folic acid is the artificial man made version of folate. It is not identical and it is harmful to some people. The natural version FOLATE is what is in plants and is safe. I have to carefully read ingredients on anything I buy so as not to accidentally end up consuming folic acid. Many mix the two up, but it is important to use the correct term. For people with mthfr folic acid blocks the absorbtion of folate and we cannot use folic acid.

I live in the Abruzzo region of Italy and this stuff grows anywhere you spit here. I don’t even bother buying it, I can just grab some while I’m walking my dog it’s so prolific here. The variety here in Italy, when sautéed is actually quite tender and delicious, especially if you do one boil first. Chard and yellow dock are also equally rampant here. This stuff helps with digestion and weight loss like nobody’s business. I eat whatever I want here in Italy and stay thin significantly easier than I ever was able to do in the USA. I forage for this and other greens almost every single day here Abruzzo and, it saves money on groceries.
Same situation in missouri! i just pulled some up from outside the thrift store lol, the stuff is absolutely everywhere, red clover, wild lettuce, nettles, and elderberries. its amazing how abundant our earth really is despite how far industrialization has gone. fun to imagine what it looked like before all that

Chicory is one of my favorites. It's hard to get a hold of in quantity around here because of their annoying habit of growing next to roadways and driveways...

Thank you, thank you for this video! I found chicory growing in my yard a couple of months ago and I immediately went to your site to find benefits. I couldn't find a video on it sadly. So you can image how excited I was to hear from your last video I watched that you were making one on chicory. Since following you I have started growing new herbs like marshmallow, sage, thyme, rosemary and calendula and harvesting existing herbs from my gardens for teas and tinctures. It grows along our roadways here, but like you said, they are covered in who knows what, and wouldn't be safe to consume.

I recently had a dandelion sprout in one of my containers. I decided to let it grow since it was in totally different soil than those growing in the yard. I couldn't believe how big and robust it grew. At least now I know a good medium to grow them in if I choose to actually grow a crop. :)
Yes, they get really big when given good soil that is not depleted like lawn soil is
I grow a large crop for my chickens. They love it! They will get very large.

I sowed wild flower seeds in a small bed. One plant came up with huge leaves, which at first I thought were some type of lettuce. I was surprised a few days since to find beautiful blue flowers blooming. My son has an app on his phone which identified plants, and was surprised to learn that it is chicory.

I make chickery root and put it with my dandelion. Root for coffee substitute with a little bit of cinnamon.

Its difficult to find wild chicory where I live HOWEVER I found some and I couldn't get the whole root, but I got a lot of it. We'll be having frost here probably within the next 20 days or so. Should I just plant it inside for now or should I go ahead and plant it now before the frost? I've been looking for it for 2 years and was so happy and praised God for the find!
The plant can take off from the smallest root. Go ahead and plant it out where you want it. It will start growing in the spring

I have a bunch growing in my neighbors yard and some spots in my yard. I will harvest seeds from those growing in my yard
It is evasive, will end up all over your yard, I have it everywhere, so be careful with it.Some years my yard gets overtaken, then another year, not as many will come up.

The more of your herb related videos I watch, the more I begin to wander if rotting your herb blend plants in a closed container of water wouldn't make a total plant food tea for container plants? Certainly sounds like it would have everything a caged plant could need.
Right? That is why I often will just pick big leaves from various plants like this that are in excess or even chop and drop and leave them around my plants to feed the soil

It just got me thinking Heidi (as your content often does). At the end of the season last year I brought a potted cherry tomato plant in the house and stuck it in south facing window. My 6 year old ate tomatoes off of it all winter. I brought it back outside for the season this year and have only now brought it back in the house (hopefully for a repeat of last year).
This plant is over two years old and going strong despite the dismal weather this year. Watching your video made me think maybe I could give it a more balanced and nutritious fertilizer than the water it has lived on for 2 years now.
About a month ago I started a batch of stinging nettle tea fertilizer, so your video reminded me that perhaps I should add various herbs and plants to this mix.
Being indoors means chop and drop probably isn't going to work.
Might be crazy; but I'd like to keep this Cherry tomato going and give it to my kid when he leaves home someday.
Seeing how long I can keep others going in the house is an interesting thought as well.
@@thornhedge9639 I often toss my expended tea herbs in potted plants. While most of the nutrients are not longer in them, I assume there must still be some and the plant material at least ads more to the dirt to break down and turn into dirt.
On a side note, I recently learned that small amount of tomato leaves CAN be consumed and some chefs use them to add flavor to sauces plus they have health benefits. As with many things, it is about moderation but it would take eating a whole pound at a time for them to be toxic. Have not tried it yet but now I am curious. But, with that said, the leaves should be able to break down and enrich the soil as well.

I just enjoy learning from you.. You give me thoughts and ideas to do thing's.. You really in lighten me to make shampoo for myself.. I lost a lot of my hair due to covid 19.. Using what I learned in school about thing's a person could use on hair and watching your video's.. I went had my hair cut to my neck because of the damage that covid did too my hair.. I had shampoo my hair for over a month fine baby hair's coming out on the top of my head and soft and shiny.. You had said I need to take vitamin D.. I had started taking vitamin D for vitamin D low vitamin D.. Thank you for the help and encouragement you gave too me to have confidence to make shampoo.. Bless you and your family in the name of Jesus... God is good all the time..

@@RainCountryHomestead It may only at this time in the top of my head it blessed me when the woman who cut my hair off to my neck she said she saw little tiny fine baby hair's in the top of my head she said too me your hair is so soft and shiny concerding the damage that covid did too the length of my hair.. I cried the whole time she was cutting my hair it is the longest it has been in years to see my glory being cut it has broke my heart into.. I ask you to pray for the healing of my hair.. The lady that cut my hair she said they have had a lot of customers come in their beauty shop to have their hair cut or worked on.
Three of my Facebook friends has or is loosen their hair to covid 19.. Sis I don't know if you can or would thing about letting people beware that with some covid patients has lost some or all of their hair too covid 19.. I wish I could show you what my hair looked like before and after covid 19.. It sadness me a lot..God is with me through all of this.. I just would not recommend using any of the aerial parts (leaves, flowers, stems) of the plants along the roadway because of the contaminants. I would even be leery of using the roots but that would depend on just how close to the road they are.

I am five four and the weeds around me grow like crazy, if I have rainy weeks that and dandilion become taller then me, by the time I can do yardwork again.

Yes, you can do that. I have not tried it yet as I have been saving the seeds which means leaving the flowers in place

My son's girlfriend who went through Chemo for 6 months and is now Cancer free, also got Covid in August which was a flu for her, but now she is experiencing Chemo induced Menopause. A 19 year old girl should not be having Hot Flashes. Does anyone know how to make this stop? Ten years ago my sister had to have her uterus and ovaries removed because of endometriosis and instantly had menopause systems, but her doctor told her that he couldn't help her because if he gave her estrogen, the endometriosis would come back. So she did her research and found that lots of exercise, especially weight training, and tons of vegetables and healthy foods did the trick. A year later she went back her doctor and he was shocked to see that her hormone levels were normal. So far this info is all I have to help this teenage girl. If anyone knows anything that would help get her hormones working again, I'd really appreciate it.

I tried to grow chicory, it's suppose to grow like a weed. But, you know, it didn't grow for me! All I can think of is I had sent to me old seed. Did you do anything special to get it to germinate? Where did you get your seed?
I always start any new seed, especially herbs, in small pots indoors in a window first. I have found with most herbs, I rarely do well with direct seeding. Sometimes seeds/plants need to be acclimated to your own climate before they can do well going straight into the ground. Since we are a very unusually wet area and tend to stay on teh colder side, this always works best for me. Once the plants get acclimated, the seed that comes from them can usually just drop to the ground and grow new plants without problem

No, sorry, I am not currently selling any of my dried herbs because I need them either for me and my family or for using in the skin and hair care products I sell.

For some reason, I have had more failures when using them to can meat. I can do batch after batch of veggies without a single failure but I have had several on my meats and have no idea why. I do everything the same way. Then again, I have not tried in awhile either because I have been too nervous! haha

I read that you can’t drink it if you have a ragweed allergy.. is this true?
Pretty much any aster, which is the largest of the flower families and it includes chicory, sunflowers, echinacea, and much, much more. It is said if you are allergic to ragweed, you need to avoid all asters.

I did show images all through this video (if you have not had time to actually watch because you were listening instead, I suggest you watch it so you can see how it looks in various stages, close ups of the flowers and the leaves. Study the images and compare. I believe it is common for chicory to get about 4 feet tall but as I said in the video, can get much taller if growing in rich soil

I can usually just quit cold turkey but the easiest way is to cut back on the amount each day. Like most such things, weaning off is best

Is chicory root supposed to be SWEET? I got the Anthony's brand off of Amazon, and its not sweet whatsoever, in fact, it extremely bitter. 😝
No, it is not naturally sweet. It is closely related to dandelion so the flavor would be similar

I grew ginger successfully this year in New Jersey. Start the rhizomes in seeding soil in the spring indoors and transplant in may.

Ginger grows well in pots just as it does in the ground, so is turmeric

I am not sure, I would need to look into that. I know there are some nasturtiums with variegated leaves

Yes I think so, it seeded itself all over where we lived once, it has red splodges on the leaves and went to seed like chicory.
I have chicory in my yard that is variegated with red - it's really pretty! I don't see it much in the spring, though. It tends to show up more in the summertime.

However, dandelions and chicory simply do not need any fertilizers or pesticides so it is not as important to find it with the "organic" label. My guess is they are the same thing, only the "organic" variety has been certified which then raises the cost as it is expensive to get that government certification. Just another way they can get a piece of the profits

I have yet to try the chicory root as a tea by itself. I think many roast it to give it better flavor though
ive tried the dandy blend but its not british so i didnt buy more
