Well, I don't know how Chris will find all these comments, but single dad Homesteading sent me. Bless you, bless you for all the seeds you gave him and also all of us at Doug and Stacy's event.
Single Dad Homesteading sent me here. What a wonderful place to see and learn from. From watching Single Dad homesteading RUclips, I am getting excited about growing a garden. You have so many different kinds of seeds and many varieties I have never heard of before. I believe your seed company is inspiring people to grow gardens and plant something different. You are providing the homesteading community with healthy seeds to grow healthy food for families and as our families eat well, we raise healthy children. Thank you.
Single dad homestead sent me. Your seeds are awesome. You make growing gardens much easier for a large portion of the community. Keep up the great job. Thanks.
Single Dad Homesteading told us to stop by - Thank you Baker Creek for being dedicated to saving heirloom seeds, sharing the history of the seeds, and the knowledge of growing heirloom seeds from all over the world for those interested in growing their own food and for those in need of food. It is their goal to educate everyone about a better, safer food supply.
Chris at Single Dad Homestead sent me. I’ve subscribed over a year ago and just got my recent order. Love the information you share on different varieties and my favorite thing about heirloom seeds is the story and how by planting your seeds the story continues. Thanks
Chris from Single dad Homesteading sent me over. Baker Creek provides great community events. The seeds you all provide are fanastic quality. Love that they are all heirlooms. So good for our lands and people to have foods from your wonderful seeds.
Interesting! I love the top and appreciate your nice strong voice! I love the Chicory flower! Excellent education of the Jewler's loop! Thank you! Your a natural! MUCH OBLIGED!
all i know about burdock is the drink dandilion the burdock, I LOVED that as a child. My grandmother used to buy it for us. Its an old English drink, its so good, I bought a bottle of it for my daughter one day and she hated it lol
Milkweed is an entirely different plant. One that is super important to Monarch butterflies and looks nothing like Chicory. Also, they are only weeds because that's how most people view them. Almost all "weeds" are medicinal and or edible.
Chris from Single Dad Homesteading sent me over to comment and watch more of yalls videos! Love out baker creek seeds and cant wait to make another order soon!
Interesting! I like the fact that chickory is non toxic even edible. Many blue flowers are poisonous so it is always good to find a pretty blue flower that’s safe to grow near vegetables. I don’t have a jeweler’s glass, but a macro lens on my phone also works!😉
Hi, I just seen your video and was interested in the wooden box you are growing in, have you done a harvest video showing how you open that wooden box? Looking forward to your answer, loved your information, well delivered. Marina
Chris from Single Dad Homesteading sent me. I feel that what your doing for the community is huge from the free seed to only selling heirloom seed shows your more interested in the food aspect instead of the financial aspect.
Thanks for this video on chicory. My envelope says it's not for consumption, so I was a little disappointed that I'd bought and planted it. I'll do a little more research before I plant chicory again. As for the New Orleans style coffee, I was raised on the stuff. My husband says he can stand a spoon up in my coffee...lol. But, I had read several years ago that chicory is high in vitamins and minerals. So, chicory coffee is good for you, too.
yup i dig or should say that i used to dig those roots when i dug roots for the medicinal root and herb market, what are the dimensions on that burdock box that you grow them in? that looks easier then digging them out of the ground!! when will the "white " burdock seed be available? and the chicory? i would like to try to grow them (2) two plants!
We are always trialing and growing new things out here, but we don't plant to offer either of these in the upcoming 2021 Whole Seed Catalog. We are offering TAKINOGAWA BURDOCK currently which easily grow to 3' in length. The boxes are about 4 feet tall so the soil doesn't run off when we water.
Hi Jamie. I LOVE burdok stems which have been boiled till soft, breaded and fried. It is a thistle plant and related to artichoke...so the flavor is very close to "cardoon" . In fact, some will argue that it IS cardoon but it is not. Closer to cardoon would be the stem of the leaf of the artichoke plant. In any case...they are ALL delicious (stems, as well as root!)
I"m going to try! I know chicory doesn't need good soil, so I was going to try with perhaps some aged saw dust and subsoil mix? Need to do a little more research
Excellent concept for growing long rooted plants. I wonder how this would work with a slightly larger around pot, and multiple plants per pot. Doing this at scale would be a great engineering challenge.
Thanku. After harvesting the burdock root from your plant’s wall structure, can you save the plant from dying or you can cut the top of the root and the plant will continue to grow back root?
I haven’t gotten into roots yet, not nearly like I have learning my native wildflower and plant allies. Sounds interesting. I’m busy trying to save my natives whereas my county mows it all down in the right of way and I feel so sad when they do that. It is their right, so I must comply, even on my own land, but nothing says I cannot dig them up and move them into my micro-meadow beforehand.
When do you know Chicory is ready to harvest for the root? I dunno the lifetime, or the temps it likes. I planted mine from seed sometime in Jan, in zone 9, I've got one row of leaves level to the ground on most and a few have a couple extra rows of leaves perking up.
Jamie J, would it make it any better if I just peel off the woody part? I do that with my radish because sometimes the very top near the leaves gets woody and I just peel it off.

Chickory?!?! An herb?!?! It used to grow.wild around the small town I grew up in in OR. We always called it Milk Weed cause of the sappy white milky goo that would pour out of its stems when you would pick the flowers. Used to think the flowers where such a pretty blue as a kid, but learned the hard way not to pick anymore for Mom as it always seemed to stain your hands (or stick to it like a tree sap - hatd to get off), & made you smell horrible!
Highly invasive WEEDS? I'd take so called weeds popping up everywhere over another cvs, Walgreens or Walmart full of toxic garbage! What a shame you've been indoctrinated to view nature's healing plants as invasive weeds.
You know what’s funny? What we label as weeds have a lot of medicinal properties and are found in abundance. Almost like… it’s supposed to be that way, lol

Chicory root is growing everywhere here in Delaware right now. The flowers are so pretty and never knew what they were until this video! So cool

My 3 acre farm/yard is covered with these!

The first year you harvest roots. If you want flowers and seeds, that is the 2nd year. Then the plant dies.

I have those " weeds" all over my yard😂 .. does the burdock turn to stick thorns, or do thorns grow near it ?

They are best harvested in fall!
Would have liked to see the chicory root.
Thank u
hi, new here! How can I roast chicory root and what is the temp that I roast them at? Thank you
I have a huge burdock plant that randomly sprouted last year, it’s flowering right now.
Wouldn't be a god year to eat the root, last year would have been for the root harvest. I'd worry this year would be woody... but maybe try it?
Jamie J, would it make it any better if I just peel off the woody part? I do that with my radish because sometimes the very top near the leaves gets woody and I just peel it off.
I'm not sure. I've never done it
