    Is this the same as dead nettle?

    • @SmallSeeds
      @SmallSeeds  5 месяцев назад +7

      This question has come up a lot! They do look alike but they are different plants both in the mint family. Dead nettle tends to bloom in early Spring while self heal blooms from early to late summer.

    I am a Licensed Acupuncturist, with 2 Masters Degrees in Oriental Medicine, and Prunella Vulgaris is one of my favorite Chinese Herbs. Your video is very informative, and I appreciate all the new information about it that I wasn’t aware of. I’m actually growing it this year from seed which I sowed last autumn, and it overwintered well, despite several weeks of snow, covered with a plastic bag. I will save seeds from a few flowers to sow in a partial shade and sun bed on the east side of my house, which is in a pine, fir, and oak forest. I’m so happy to grow this lovely herb and flower!

      What the biggest frustration factor for me is when I research an herb and it's benefits, I will find medical sites that will tell you what is said about various benefits of the herb but always conclude that the claim is inconclusive because no studies have been done to support it.
      Cynical me says, sure you don't do a study because you don't want to find out it is true.

      Wonderful! I would love to share! I have some instructional videos on making herb infused oils that can be applied with self heal as well as a video on how I made the salve. I will link them here in the comment. For the tincture I use a ratio of 1 gram of fresh self heal to 2 milliliters of everclear.(this can be doubled, tripled and so on..) I will gather the fresh plant and chop it well to increase the surface area. (a blender works well for this) I put the herbs in a clean jar and then add the everclear. I let this sit for about 2-3 weeks in a dark cool place, strain and then bottle & label. Videos on making herb infused oils: ruclips.net/video/INykP25N2SQ/видео.html & ruclips.net/video/07Wm3i4MsUU/видео.html Video with the salve recipe: ruclips.net/video/KHhJzOfokqI/видео.html (you could use this recipe with only self heal infused oil if you'd like)

    Such a great instructional video, thank you! Just a note: In AZ, we have what could be a potential poisonous look alike, although not perfect, would be Lantana, aka "Lantana camara", which is highly toxic to humans & animals. The Prunella vulgaris plant sounds wonderful to look into, thank you again! 🌻

      Thanks! I was just in Jamaica and saw tons of Lantana and was very curious about it. Beautiful plant but good to know it’s toxic.

    Thank you so much for this treasure trove of information!! I planted Self Heal seeds last year that I sources from 'Strictly Medicial Seeds'. The plant grew but didn't bloom but I expected that as many perennials don't put on a good show until the following year and onward. This year it's flowered BEAUTIFULLY and I absolutely LOVE it! I love it so much that I divided it and planted little masses of it in several different spots around my yard, garden and flower beds. The bees seem love it as well. Since I finally have flowers this year I had been wondering if it was as straight forward as most herbs where you just harvest, dry and store or use fresh as needed. I always like to make sure I'm using herbs properly for safety. Thanks a million!
    ALSO, What style of tea mug set up is that? Does it have a name? And where did you get it from?? I'd live to find something like that. Would certainly save me thr trouble of needing different tools and things to make it. Just poor over a straining cup that nests nicely right over the top of the mug = YES PLEASE!

    • @SmallSeeds
      @SmallSeeds  Год назад +2

      I wish I could give you a brand or store I bought it from but I actually found it at a thrift store. I am sure they have something like it online though. Perhaps search loose leaf tea straining mug? So happy to hear your self heal is blooming and bountiful this year 🥰

    Thanks for a thorough investigation of this plant, which has only recently come to my attention.
    What is the north American distribution? We are in Florida.

    • @SmallSeeds
      @SmallSeeds  2 года назад

      It is found in Florida. There is a long list of states it’s found in actually. This site has the list: www.wildflower.org/plants/result.php?id_plant=prvu
      It’s growing cycle will vary according to climate so I can’t say for sure when it’s blooming in Florida but I hope you are able to find some 😊

    That's crazy, it looks soooo similar to a common garden "weed" Henbit. But henbits Latin name is Lamium amplexicaule. But it is also part of the mint family (square stem of course), purple flowers, like they look so similar!
