- Heal-All (Prunella vulgaris) aka. Self-Heal, is a low growing edible plant with clusters of purple flowers and ovate (egg shaped) leaves that grow opposite on a square, mint family, stem. Traditionally used as a medicine for scrapes and cuts, as well as internal issues of all sorts, hence the name Heal-All. The leaves can be eaten raw or cooked and they remind me of spinach. A cold infusion drink can be made from the dried leaves, and it taste surprisingly like iced tea.

the Damnedest thing - when saw the picture of this plant and said to myself "Self " we've seen this thing before and low and behold it's growing outside of my work in the lawn .

I love this plant. I eat in salads, dry for teas, and make a tincture with it. Asian people use the dried flower heads as a popular tea. I’ve also eaten the flower heads. ❤❤❤
Thank you so much! I have three mystery volunteers appear last year in three different raised beds. I knew they were some mint family relative, and put them in containers for the winter, then transplanted them into a bed a few weeks ago. Now they are blooming the prettiest flowers, and I could identify them as self-heal! And thanks to your video I'm going to dry leaves and make "tea!"

@@GiveitaGrowllo! I have a lot of these growing wild in my garden. At first I did not know what they are and waited to see what they’ll do. I was very Happy to see the beautiful flowers and so I kept them. This Year they almost populate a whole bed so I have been pulling them out and throwing them to the compost bin. Thank you so much for your video. I probably need to transplant some of these to our park.

Just found this video. It's a good one. I have lots of Heal-all and plantain growing naturally on my land. Sometimes, I dry the leaves of both and infuse coconut oil with them. After straining the leave fragments out, you are left with a nice salve that is great for sunburnt and bug bites. If you live in a warm climate, you can melt some beeswax in to keep it a solid. I store in the fridge for up to a month. 😊

Thanks so much for the informational video! I began growing self heal in my garden 2 years ago, and I've known nothing about harvesting, I didn't even know it would grow flowers until this year. This video was so descriptive, and helps to understand from start to finish all I came looking for, and with such a calm relaxing voice. I'd like to make a suggestion for the flavor of your tea at the end: use honey instead of sugar. I started making tea from my coneflower plant last year and honey was the perfect touch. It also complements the medicinal properties of the drink.

Thank you for your VDO..I try to find the one I can relate how to use this plants..I have in my garden every years..and pull them out as weeds..until I found name this year because try to study about Dead nettles..is similar and some people confude with Self Heal..this year I wait until plants have flowers is easy to recognize but I do not know how to use them...your VDO...is so clear to help..thank you so much..I will collect them for tea.
I found some of this by the roadside on my walk, and pulled up a plant to ID when I got home, It was growing amongst a bunch of other weeds in a weedy patch of ground. If it survives being transplanted in a pot, I'll try making some tea once it grows out more. I enjoyed your video, and I just subscribed.

We have a lot of this growing around our place and a couple days ago, after finally looking into it, I decided to eat one of the buds. It tastes pretty good and after just a bit I thought I could feel it, and it felt pretty good too. So I went and picked a few more and when my wife got home I told what they are and what I read about them and we both ate 2 of them. A little while after that I felt really good, so I went and asked her how she was doing and she told me she was feeling really good too. We both ate a two again yesterday and could really feel it again.
I picked a few more today and ate a few small ones and set a few more out to dry to make some tea. After looking into it a bit more I learned I should be picking those that haven't flowered yet because they're more potent, and there are a bunch of those out there, so tomorrow I'm going to grab a few of those and eat one or two.
One of the things I noticed while walking around our lot yesterday and today, which is thickly forested, very rocky, and on a fairly steep hillside, is that my hips weren't hurting. Not even when I started walking back up the hill. The only thing I can attribute that too is the Heal-All. I can't say for sure that's it yet, but I don't have anything else I can say might be the reason. Some days are better or worse but they've been hurting for years now and I've always felt it walking up that hill.
It's only been 3 days but I have to say I do think this stuff does work and I'm amazed. I've been ignoring it for the past 30 years.

I planted some seeds in a container this year. They are growing slowly, but they are growing. I want to use them as a green cover under a loquat tree I'm growing in the container. Can't wait til they get big enough to try.

self heal is a mint relative opposite leaves. square stem. same a nettle and lemon balm etc
I liked that. good pace, but with plenty of attention to detail. Only suggestion might have been to cover some of the herbal reasons you might use this. i.e. daily tonic or for specific ailments.
I used to have a good friend who introduced me to botany/herbals and, sadly, he died kind of young and I always missed him and this mellow style kind of reminds me of that.
oh and yeah, totally agree that honey sprang to mind as a sweetener, rather than hard sugar, especially a nice local honey with good depth of flavour I'd suggest.

Hi - loved this video and you have really great descriptive pictures. This is the first I heard of using the leaves. it grows crazy in my yard. The way you made the tea, can I assume you could do a sun tea and let it sit out it indirect sun also?

Be careful making Sun tea. There's lots of articles on the web about it just being a gimmick... A gimmick that grows bad bacteria very easily. Yea can easily be made with food water so that's what most do nowadays. I think Sun tea was just a marketing gimmick for superior to sell glass pitchers as special tea making pitchers. basically Just someone creating a market for an item that already had a market but died down so they needed to sell those glass pitchers and boom Sun tea gets hyped... Probably someone back in the late 1800s selling snake oil and Sun tea pitchers lol.

It will spready slowly, mainly by seed. I have not had any problems with it overreaching the garden like mint can. should be fine to plant with other mint family herbs.

I believe the flowers are more commonly made into a tea than the leaves

Does Prunella grandiflora or Prunella pagoda have the same medicinal qualities as Prunella vulgaris???
I am certain I have this in my yard. Tho I purchased a plant that said it was self heal on the tag. But the leaves are quite different, long and softly serrated but the flower is identical but bigger and a pinker purple. Know anything about that?
That could be a cultivar, as opposed to the wild verity.
Ahh, ur in Minnesota! Well, will probably never find these in Az in zone 7c. Maybe around flagstaff? Hmm
These grow all over the place, you might be able to find them in your area. Check in wild meadows and along trails and roads, they are easiest to identify with the flowers which bloom in summer.
I'm curious about how well they did when you transplanted them. Did you put them in full or part sun?
They did very well, this year the are sprouting all over the garden and I love it! They can handle full or partial sun.
What’s the best way to make a tincture? I have collected some flowers with just the top leaves. Can I use that?
I dont make tinctures, but the leaves and flowers would work great.

I think I have this growing in my lawn (it's incredibly short I think due to mowing) and I want to try and make tea with it but I'm worried it might be the wrong plant because all the examples I see online aren't so dwarfed
Now that you mention it (possibly) being in your lawn I'm wondering the same in my lawn.
I'm going to take a closer look at it this summer and if it's a close enough resemblance, dig it up and plant it in a bed and see what happens.
One thing I can say for sure is better safe than sorry - if you can't absolutely, positively identify a plant (any wild plant intended for consumption), don't consume it!! Way too many (potentially deadly) lookalikes out there to 2nd guess wild edibles (think mushrooms for instance!).
I have what I think is minors lettuce growing (in abundance!) in my yard which is supposed to be super healthy but I won't touch it until someone who's harvested it confirms that's what it is.

Thyroid issues.... I think I saw that addressed on the Dr Boz, or Dr Mindy channel.
And I think a designed abstention from food with lots of herbal tea was part of it.
Oh, and anxiety. Besides dealing with the underlying emotional injury, vitamin D is helpful. Most people who do not get direct sun to the skin are deficient. It will also render the mighty covid to a sniveling temporary irritation.
Oregano and prunella are the ones I have trouble telling apart.

Nope, just cold water from the filter. This would make a nice hot tea though.
You didn’t mention that the stems are square like all mint .

For the drink I just used cold water.

@@GiveitaGrow yup. Same here, but now more than ever. I used to go out and fill buckets full with dandelion and chicory when I lived in the south. But, out here in the Mohave desert, where I raised my 5 rug rats, we don't get much true dandelion or cats ear. But if it rains in the winter or early fall, they get a butt load of these two called desert dandelion and desert chicory. The roots are tiny though. 2 to 3 inchs long, not much bigger around then a spaghetti noodle. You want to talk bitter though, dang. Even the flowers will make your face want to cave in if you try to chew one of these desert versions up!
I used to roast up both roots, when I was able to get them, until they were nearly black. Then I'd grind it up real fine, mix it 50/50 with the darkest roast coffee I could find, made a version an old boy in Louisiana taught me. Basically just another cowboy coffee, with some blackstrap molasses and a splash of cream added to it. ;-) Very short growing season out here.

If you picked them in your yard, that means they grow there. So, whether you cover them or not it should not matter. ;)
If they get too exposed over Winter they may not come back the following Spring.

I've never heard that. The medicinal qualities of plants are often natural pesticides that can kill small insects, but provide benefits to us, like mint.
