Amazingly, I hav this plant! Bought it six years ago, on the advice of a garden store owner, for an area that got little water and was going to be neglected. Bought three little plants. It grew a little bit each year, didn’t die, stayed green and the deer and rabbits didn’t eat it. Perfection. Eventually dug it up and put it in a different area for the same reasons. The bed it was in was getting crowded, and I needed a ground cover that would be fool proof. Dry, neglected and under a new tree. Dug it up, separated it and put it in. It never wilted, and is looking green and healthy about a month later now. Think I have about 15 plants from those original three. What a work horse, and I had no idea about the medicinal qualities.

I’ve found that vaping or smoking the flower of this herb feels almost identical to THC, aside from not helping with nausea like THC does. I’d compare the potency of the flowers to some 2-3% THC cannabis. I’ll be trying it mixed with hemp soon, that may be the perfect combo for those who don’t live in a “legalized” state or country.

Thank you so much for this, Correne. I have always loved plants and a handful of years ago, after visiting overseas relatives and seeing Kew's and Amsterdam's Medic Gardens, I began to incorporate more herbs into my garden plantings. With Covid's arrival, as so many shops were closed or simply because I felt moved to stay home anyway, I started enrolling in online herbalism courses.. In haste I ordered herbs galore, including some I possibly didn't need, but I'm now fine-tuning my Medic Garden. I'm becoming more discerning about which herbs will be beneficial, and why, and how, and I've already felt the benefits of my home-grown plant medicine. I'm totally besotted with herbs and was thrilled to discover that this very plant, Heal All (aka Self heal) , which I'd only recently been sorry to discover was NOT a native ground cover, IS a wonderful, wonderful little herb. She is my current herb of the month study subject, and your generous sharing adds to the monograph I am putting together for her! Thank you! 💚💚💚💚💚💚💚

I didn't know this is what I had come up profusely in my flower garden. It was pretty and close to the ground, like a green mandala when I discovered it. And then it grew those taller stems and flowers. Husband convinced me to get rid of it - telling me how it was all through our lawn.
Well, now I know what I just discarded...
However, I am hoping I wasn't so thorough while taking it out of the ground. Hopefully there are a lot if roots that will come up again!

I was pretty sure that it was heal all about two years ago but didn't want to experiment with it till I was one hundred percent sure. In your video you stated that it could grow tall and it has a squared stem these were the final identifiers that make me absolutely sure that what I am looking at is in fact heal all. Thank you. Ghost pipe is a special kind of gift. I don't take anti anxiety meds anymore because of it. Once a year I eat a flower and tincture the rest of what I harvest. (It tastes kind of like pepper) I only harvest 1/5 of what I find. It cannot be propagated. It has symbiotic and parasitic relations that are far too difficult to reproduce. It is truly a gift. I believe what you said about what you find is what you are going to need. Your information is very interesting. I live in the very NW of the states.

I have a natural comfrey salve that I make , that works for mosquitos amazingly well. It is basically just a routine balm ( recipes are online) i use for healing , skin irritations minor bruises and cuts. It is made with shea butter , olive oil or coconut oil and bees wax. I use essential oils which are as follows : frankincense, lavender, and a few drops of lemon essential oils. I found out what a good mosquito repellent this was after being stranded in florida after a hurricane ( Irma) and getting flooded into a hotel with no power at all for over a week. Everyone was getting so many mosquito bites... except me. I realized the salve was the only thing it could be. If used on a baby or person with a lot of skin allergies, I would do a small patch test on the skin before applying all over the body. It softens too! (I don't think you would need the comfrey if there's none available, to repel the mosquitos, but im not sure about that, I think its the oils) It works 100% for me !

If you live somewhere hotter you may want to dilute the oil and apply it to your pulse points and areas like your elbows and the back of your neck. Lavender essential oil saved me in Miami where mosquito populations were immune to DEET.

Very interesting herb. Do you filter the herb after it’s processing time? And then store in an eye dropper bottle like tinctures? Or do you just scoop a teaspoon of herb and honey or however much you want and swallow like a dose of cough medicine?
I am very interested in what you said about spider veins/varicose veins. Is this used topical for veins? And I’m sure you would make a poultice or something of that nature for veins? Maybe not? Am going to go checkout your book. Thanks.

    • @SpiraeaHerbs
      @SpiraeaHerbs  Год назад +5

Thank you for leaving a comment! I tend to process things when I need them, letting them macerate with the herbs in it for as long as possible (this cuts down on oxidation). Depending on what it is, I will then store it in amber bottles and then transfer smaller amounts to dropper bottles yes!
I'm not able to provide specific medical advice without Health Canada getting their knickers in a twist... but I can say that with varicose veins you want to treat them both internally (tincture/tea) and topically (with a poultice ideally).
      Thank you again!

Truthfully, I don't really have a rhyme or reason for what I do. Honey, just like ACV is, is an medium of extraction (meaning it helps to pull out medicines just like the vinegar does). So in my mind it makes a more well rounded medicine to use both at the same time. BUT if you ask a hundred herbalists how to do something you'll get 101 different answers. 😂

I'm hoping to be able to market it for exactly what it is, but I want to test it a little more, using different carrier oils, before I begin handing it out willy-nilly. However, I can say that it works, but I don't want this information public just yet, as I don't have any information, or testing, for allergies to the plant I'm using in the oils.

Do you make a bug spray with it or just have it growing around?

Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I have digestive issues and do not do well with apple cider vinegar is there anything else I could use instead?

You are most welcome. For those sensitive to apple cider vinegar your options would include making tea (from fresh herb or dried), a glycerite or a tincture. You could also make an elixir which is a sweetened tincture. Lots of options!

Mine is the biolite coffee pot with the partially melted lid which works as a great cooking pot

@@SpiraeaHerbs I love their coffee pot which has many uses, and their early generation battery banks are weather resistant and very good I did not find the early generation stoves to be more than very expensive toys that could not withstand more than 6 months of 2018 florida. However my coffee pot and french press besides the lid are wonderful

@@songoftheblackunicorn666 I was looking at their stoves a while back, but the reviews I read were mixed at the time. We have a few of their lights and they have lasted quite a while though. And we do have their home system too (which reminds me to charge up that battery!).

This is ALL OVER my yard this year. I've dried some and tinctured some. Still to come is infused oil and, after watching this, maybe an oxymel. Do you think it would be redundant? I only make for my family.

I came upon this video by happenstance, and looked up "boline knife" in Wikipedia. The information I found is quite interesting.

    Your harvesting blade looks amazing.
    Where did you get it?
    Regular store in USA?
I only know this kind of blade from Miraculix, the magician of Asterix and Obelix.
He had a golden halfround blade for special herbs.

I got my blade from a kitchen store in Ontario, Canada almost 17 years ago. I kicked it old school... l before buying online. It's called a Mezzaluna and if you have a kitchen store, I bet they have them.
If not, I recommend this one if you are in the US amzn.to/4eP9Z5T

Thank you for this wonderful information. I was wondering, while you were in your beautiful garden, I noticed other white flowers next to the Prunella vulgaris. Is that plant with white flowers also medicinal?

You are most welcome. I think you are referring to the soapwort (Saponaria officinalis) and it definitely has medicinal properties!

Have you tried coffee grounds for the week in it and some cloves around it … mosquitoes and flies. Don’t like burning coffee.

We have tried burning coffee grounds. Only challenge is that you have to keep them burning constantly. But yes, it does seem to work for a time.
