      Traditional fabric bandages are problematic; they soak up medicine and stick to the wound as it scabs over. A more functional concept is to use at least 6 mil clear flexible polypropylene. I buy 48" rolls for many purposes. Cut useable sizes. Sterilize in alcohol or bleach and when dry store in good lid container. I apply salve of Manukian honey, she's butter and other herbs onto the polypropylene and then directly onto the wound. It is held in place with compression wrap or packaging roll film with tape securing the wrap. All of the salve is in direct contact with no pad absorption and no sticking to wound.

    When making herbal oils, it's best to use fully dried herbs. It isn't just mold that you need to worry about, there are some bacteria that can taint the oil if there's any water. Even the small amount in wilted herbs. Also, letting the oil steep for ~6-8 weeks is better than letting it steep over heat for a few hours.

    • @charmc4152
      @charmc4152 Год назад +12

      I can see your point, but wouldn't you lose some of the beneficial oils from the plants by letting them completely dry out?

    • @gretchenhaugen7303
      @gretchenhaugen7303 Год назад +26

      Totally agree. I know it sounds counter-intuitive to people but you don't want your medicine contaminated with bacteria and you certainly don't want it to mold in the container. My comfrey salve sits for a month to "percolate" and draw out all the medicine from the root. You get more potency if you give it time.

    • @gretchenhaugen7303
      @gretchenhaugen7303 Год назад +29

      @@charmc4152 I would say it's negligible. Also, dried herbs take up less space than raw, so you're probably going to get more potency because you will be using more herbs i.e. half cup raw herb is less herbs than a half cup dried. Only time I use raw is if I'm going to ingest it immediately.

    • @Kayenne54
      @Kayenne54 Год назад +21

      @@charmc4152 Drying most foods seems to concentrate nutrients; also all those illustrations you see of apothecary and herbal shops have bunches of dried herbs everywhere. As long as the drying process doesn't involve too high a heat, there should be minimal losses. Lavender sachets contain dried lavender flower heads, and retain their aroma for ages, for example.

    My grand father was right off a reservation and we grew up learning about these plants. Yarrow root has so many uses. Along with plantain(pigears),and comfrey. We make salves and tea. Be careful if you are planning to process your own yarrow root the numbing effect can be so effective that you might cut yourself and not realize it if doing bulk harvesting. Pretty handy that the plant also stops bleeding lol

    The comfrey root is what contains allantoin, which is the cell regenerator. The leaves are for pain relief and work great. I make a comfrey salve with leaf and root and I can't even say how many people use it now. One guy at church went in for back surgery and the dr cut a nerve and he's been on opiates for years, until I offered him a jar of my salve. No more opiates and he smiles all the time. I made this for my 10-year-old granddaughter. I used Yarrow, rosemary, oregano, thyme, and sage. My granddaughter has severe eczema on the tops of her hands. in late fall and winter every year knuckles are dry, cracked and painfully bleeding. Her mother has tried every lotion recommended by their pediatrician, and nothing has worked. The required handwashing and sanitizer that she has to use at school makes it so much worse. She started using this homemade lotion in early fall before it got cold outside. She uses it at least once a day and tries to use it at bedtime and before going to school in the morning. So far she is showing no signs of the eczema on her hands. She says “look Nana! My hands are still good!” This treatment has been a miracle for her. I thank you for sharing this recipe and showing how easy it was to make.

    Love these herbs and have made salve many times, but I always let the plant material dry completely before steeping. The only thing missing from a dried plant is the water content, which I prefer not to have in anything oil based in order to reduce the risk of mold and spoilage. Fill the jar to the absolute top with the oil for steeping, to prevent oxidation (again, to prevent mold). Steep in a dark cabinet 4-6 weeks and you will have a lovely potent oil for all uses...These are indeed wonderful and far preferable to over the counter ointments.

    As a pharmacist, this is very interesting to watch. It reminded me a lot of my compounding training. If anyone's wondering why you don't measure the plants going into the oil but do measure the oil, beeswax, and all the rest later, the reason is that not all plants are the same. Even different parts of the plant or crops from year to year may have very different concentrations of the organic components you're trying to extract into the oil. It doesn't do a whole lot of good to try and measure it unless you've got all of the equipment on the back end to monitor those concentrations through to the final product. This is homemade, not FDA regulated. But, you do want the control over the texture of the salve, so you need to ensure the right amount of your beeswax relative to the other oils you're adding, so that stuff must be weighed and measured. If you get too much oil and not enough beeswax, it'll be more liquidy than you want at room temperature. I'll reserve commentary on the effectiveness of this stuff. Too many components, not enough time to do it properly, and I'm not trying to shill for any one product, let alone any of the Pharma companies. They couldn't pay me enough to sell my integrity like that. However, Neosporin (or generic triple antibiotic) is great stuff. Use it when you need it (like healing a dirty wound after you clean it). It works very well, so don't be afraid of it, even if you prefer this type of salve for routine scrapes and minor stuff like that.

      I think effectiveness would depend on the person, the wound, etc. I make my own salve with different herbs than what she's using here but I believe the effectiveness of the oils and waxes would still be there sans herbs. Coconut oil, olive oil and beeswax have wonderful antiseptic, cleansing and healing properties. My salve worked on my daughter's poison ivy rash better in 12 hours overnight than 2 days of the steroid stuff her Dad got her from the doctor.
      My personal experience has been my salve works better than the antibiotic ointment and has the added benefit of being good for my skin 😁

    To make cleanup a bit easier, I just add the wax and oil to each sterilized mason jar, cover tightly, then I place a folded terry cloth or cotton dish towel in the bottom of the crock pot, set the jars in, cover them with water, and turn the crock pot on low until the wax melts. Then I remove the jars, open them and add the essential oils and vitamin E and give each one a good shake to blend.💜

      Try to get your beeswax from a beekeeper who does it without chemicals.
      I know some guys put things in their wax and honey you don't want in your salve.
      There are good guys and bad guys in the business.
      Better trust an old beekeeper from a village than some shop from internet.
      True story
      Some beekeepers worked with a guy from a very big company. He sells beeswax candles and all kinds of beeswax articles.
      They gave him their pure beeswax and he melted it and made pressed plates from the bees wax.
      So the bees could nist on the prepared wax plates.
      Then the bees were dieing in summer. Nobody knew why. The beekeepers were desperate. They sprayed medication, nothing saved them.
      Big loss.
      No bees, no honey, no wax, no business.
      Then someone tested the beeswax. They all had given their pure wax and they paid to get those pure pressed plates.
      Turned out the big company guy was greedy and filthy.
      He bought some cheap wax from China and mixed it with the pure wax. The chemicals and artificial flavor and artificial coloring killed the bees.
      The greedy guy had sold the pure wax from the beekeepers for very high prices to some cosmetic company. They did testing in their own laboratory so he could not betray them.
      The beekeepers got the fake wax plates which smelled and looked okay but killed the bees.
      .
      My family has some beekeepers.
      We bought the special equipment and one room in the house for wax.
      The melting and cooking and pressing needs to be done in winter.
      It is a hell of hard work and it is a sticky mess but it is pure and honest.
      The beekeepers bring their wax and they get their own wax in pressed plates as it should be.
      Of course they have to pay something.
      Find someone honest to get good pure beeswax.
      Chew it.
      They taste very different, colour is very different from every beekeeper.

    On an adventure in Israel many years ago, I toured an olive tree farm. One great tip that I learned was how to know if you are purchasing pure Olive Oil. So many brands claim this, but they cut the olive oil with other oils to make more of a profit. So how do you know if you are purchasing 100% pure olive oil? If you are in a store when purchasing, bury that bottle of olive oil somewhere in a refrigerated section for about 20 minutes. If it is indeed pure olive oil, it will begin to look 'cloudy'. If it does not turn cloudy, then it is cut with another oil(s). Brilliant little gem of knowledge!

You can instantly remove any fruit based stain instantly, right before your very eyes. And yes. That would include red wine! Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, etc. Just pour boiling water over that stain. Based on the circumstances, sometimes I put a pot of water on the stove to boil and plunge the fabric right into the pot, like a kitchen towel that has been well saturated with berry juice. Works evertime! 👊

      Topical silver gel or spray is extremely effective and not only is good as an antibiotic, silver is effective on burn wounds to heal also most people don't know. Silver is so effective it was what was used to disinfect a plane during the ebola scare when those handful of ebola patients were flown to the usa. results rna silver is probably the best, they also used to make hospital sterilization silver products which was what was used on that plane. Also iodine is extremely effective and you can buy clear iodine that does not stain the skin nowadays too.

    Just an FYI for folks. Be careful using tea tree essential oil around pets. I used some on a dog once, which is fine. But my tiny cat who is in love with my German shepherd rubbed on him and licked her paws. Unbeknownst to me at the time, tea tree is toxic to cats and there is no antidote. Fortunately, I was able to nurse her through it but it took about two weeks to get her out of the woods. She very nearly died.

    Please please PLEASE don't toss out your triple antibiotic ointment! It's almost always available for purchase, it's in a very easy to use container and it's stable for a very long time. Perfect for minor emergencies if you aren't home with your personal medicine cabinet.
    That being said I'm also big on home remedies but they take time to plan, grow, collect, prepare and store.
    When I was young I'd get ear infections every single time I had a cold so I ended up taking a lot of antibiotics to deal with that. As an adult I still get ear infections but I wanted to avoid over use of antibiotics so I made myself some mullein flower oil. That stuff is A-MA-ZING. I put some 5-8 drops of mullein oil in the ear that I can feel that stuffy light pain starting in just before bed along with a bit of cotton to keep the pillow clean and by morning everything is fine except for the oily ear, I'd much rather have a yucky oil feel then a raging ear ache! As a kid I don't recall ever receiving anything for the ear ache pain so this stuff just about blew my mind at how fast it treated the infection and the pain all in one night. Very rarely have I had to use it second night. I'll still have my cold but the oil staves off the ear infection.
    If you want to make your own oil you will need as many mullein flowers (Verbascum thapsus) as you can pick from plants that are not growing by a highway and basically follow the directions in this video to make your own oil. Since I use mine in my ears I don't add it to beeswax but I imagine the flowers can be added to the salve mix demonstrated here. I store my oil in a dark medicine dropper jar and I keep it out of light and it's good for a few years. I usually remake my oil every third year but I wouldn't be surprised if it lasted longer.
    As with all things home made please make sure you test the plants to make sure you aren't allergic and don't force your home remedies on other people without permission. My spouse won't use my oils and salves and I respect that.

      @@teresacorona502 Nope, there is just too much liability associated with selling home remedies. If I had a neighbor or friend that was interested in trying my stuff then I'd be okay with gifting a sample and teaching them how to make it but I'd never accept money for it. I'd also make it plain as day that it might not work and there can be health risks while using it the same as using stuff from big pharma. It's still free to teach people about these recipes and I feel it's very important to keep folk remedies remembered. In my opinion it's best practice to make it yourself after researching as much as you can.

    Have you ever use tallow with an infused oil to make a balm? I’m just curious the difference in using that as a vase as opposed to the beeswax. I’ve been using tallow lotion and love it.

    • @mokshalani8414
      @mokshalani8414 Год назад

      May I ask what tallow lotion you use?
      Depending on where you live & what animal it's from, the tallow may or may not be enough to get the mostly-solid ointment consistency you want in a balm. But, tallow does make an excellent fat to directly infuse the herbs in straight, so long as the fat is warm enough to stay liquid, no additional plant oils needed. Actually, tallow salves were common before the oil press was widespread
      Whatever the fat medium may be, I've found that beeswax, though traditional, is simply too waxy for me to enjoy my remedies, so I like to thicken with Cetyl Alcohol. Cetyl Alcohol is a dirt cheap & readily available thickening moisturizer that isn't drying like volatile alcohols, it's a fatty substance found in many animal fats including ours (cetyl indicating whale, and yes, whale fat salves & candles were a thing too once upon a time), and yet feels so much lighter & less greasy than true oils & fats, gives oils a silky slippy feel, and thickens like a dream. It comes in white pellets that you use exactly like you would beeswax
