  • in this video I go over all the common misfires rough running and vacuum leak symptoms on the W11 engine which is found on the Mini Cooper s r53 models from 2002 till 2007 where it went into the R56 engine now there is alot to be aware of on these engines and many people do not make this clear when making videos or online regarding this engine and I feel there is many people out there who aint aware of this and how the supercharger is usually the main and profitable cause of peoples problems

    Hi bmw doctor,
    I test drove a 2006 Cooper S ‘Park Lane’ 6 speed today which was very well presented and full service history with 116kms.
    I own an 08 v8 bmw x5 and this is a second car for my family. I drove the mini with the owner and felt it was lowish power/asthmatic to rev over 4.5krpm. Granted I was driving leniently and am wondering if there is something I’m missing or should i go for it as I’m used to a big v8 and just adjusting to different power etc.

    I have a question so my mini Cooper S 2006 will start up and rev up really high and then die. We have replace fuel pump and filter. Please we need help we have alot invested in this car! Do you have any ideas? We were thinking maybe throttle position sensor which is electrical or fuel pressure regulator. It does not show any codes at all. So nothing electronic. We just need help please! Blesses

    Having owned a supercharged mini for nearly 6 years I'd say if you have a misfire check the coil pack on top of the engine, especially pin 3 as it rusts (only pin 3 for some reason) clean it up with wet and dry paper and test again. Cheapest cure is always first. Also cold or idle tapping noises can be the cam chain tensioner, another cheap and easy self fix (access via the top of the car, no need to take wheels off etc). Early R53s are not OBD2 compliant, so cheaper code readers don't work on them at all. Otherwise I'd say they are great cars and easy to work on (other than the rear bushes on the lower front suspension arms, a pig of a job).

      Thanks. That is good info. So far, the cooper s supercharged has been a great car with the well expected age and typical failures of an old German car. I won't compare it to a Yugo. Not yet anyway.
      The subframe was surprisingly easy to get off and on for PM service, I thought it would be harder than it was.

    I have a mini 2008 coopers 65k miles with a misfire in cylinder 1 when I plug it in. Slight rough idle and only put engine light on when it’s been left to idle for a couple of minutes. If I drive it and don’t stop for long it never put engine light on. Done plugs, coil and HT leads. No other fault codes showing.

    Hi Dean I've got a mini copper s 2004 I've got a slight missfire at 2000 to 3000 rmp when driving off from a start ..After that all OK . Standerd spec bit slow pulling after that eneny clue s thanks steve

    I drive a 2003 R53 with 162k miles. 17% supercharger pulley, my car runs like a damn little beast! I pulled away from a V6 Honda Accord (2006) the other day. Such a blast to drive.

    Hey Doc, I've got an 02 Mini R50 base model but the car is very slow off the line, shakes in R and D only, the car starts right up but sometimes when I change to R or D the car turns off, It idles fine in neutral and park and it doesn't rev past 1500 rpm. Could it be a bad EGR valve??

    My intake hose is torn, like a 3 inch length slit, have inch thickness. Could that have an effect on the response?

    I have an r53 cooperS. When it get warm it revs up to 1.5k to 2k and will drop again back to 1.2 then up... keeps cycling.
    Pain in the ass when sat in traffic revving away.
    Turn on internal fans and helps drop revs back down.
    Ideas?

      I've got the same issue, it's also very slow off the line and shakes ONLY when I put it in R or D

    I just bought an R53 yesterday that runs fine once warm but while cold runs like absolute shit. Im thinking its possibly a vacuum leak but I have not confirmed it yet.

    Hi doctor was thinking if you cold help me out. Having issues with the engine starting. Takes a full 7 seconds of the starter turning for the engine to fire up. Changed battery, fuel pump, fuel filter and fixed all oil leaks as it was pissing oil like crazy. Starter seems to be turning healthy. Anything else i should be looking out for?

    Hey, I have a mini here working on the exhaust system turns red moments after it starts... same w11 supercharged engine. The cat been removed wondering if it could be the injectors stuck open...

      Hi I have the same problem the exhaust manifold gose cherry red not long after starting and it hunts really bad did you fix the issue and what was it thanks Bryan

      It was the supercharger intake rubber boot that failed. Once leaks it causes the symptom

    I am having 3 cylinder and rough start, NO MISFIRE CODES, new msd coil pack and ht leads just to check... what could be?

      Also have 120psi in cylinder 2 instead of 150 in others..

      Ditch the MSD and go stock ! Msd packs are commonly known to cause more issues than their worth on these engines

    I knew it my car runs so much better on shell 99 I go out my way to only fiill with shell 99 because it's that noticeable

    Hi, thanks for the video! My mini cooper s r53 pump would not shutdown even if i turn off ignition and remove key. It only stops when battery is removed! Any suggestions on what could be wrong?!

    Hi mate. Really good info. My R53 started running rough tonight then wouldn't idle properly. It was revving itself from 1.5 to 2.5k and fluctuating itself while driving. It will rev up to 5k on start up alone. Also eml has came on nos. Any ideas to check first?

    Most common reason for a P1498 code?

      Most likely an intake vacuum leak, which could be several things. Check the plastic intake duct to the supercharger and also the vacuum line(s) attached to it. I had a P1498 code that turned out to be a torn power brake vacuum line where it attached to the intake duct. One hint was that the brakes were not working well either, since the brake power booster wasn't getting full vacuum. I replaced that brake vacuum line and also the throttle bypass valve and its hardened, cracked rubber hose that connects it to the intake duct, so those might have been problems too. I did not replace the plastic intake duct to the supercharger because it appeared okay and I didn't want to spend any more money at that point. I replaced the two rubber seals on the intercooler but probably didn't need to. At any rate, the P1498 code disappeared when it was reassembled and it's a happy Mini again.

      Oh that's bad craic bud. Infried a glowplug controller on my e60 525d auto trying to start it after having the fuel rail and injectors off. I was raging because if replaced all 6 plugs and controller while I'd the mani off. Seems modern electrics are extremely sensitive to jump starting. Mind u I was using a jumper pack and cranking it like two men and a wee lad blasting easy start down the inlet!!!! I might fix it. Cant be bothered tho lol

      Andy Caldwell this is the normal all e60s don’t like jump packs to many modules it wakes up and zaps the power that’s why always use a charger

      I learned the hard way mate. Now iv been tempted to take the controller off and resolder the blown wires. As seen on RUclips. But wonder if it's worth the hassle. Maybe better off just buying a new one. 05 165000 miles on the clock iv had all the gremlins. Done the blanked the flaps. Converted the cracked manifold replaced injectors. Had an injector collar break spat number 5 out. Intellegent battery sensor early type ballsed up. had to remove the the seals under the front scuttles. Replaced all front arms suspension brushed struts springs and top mounts and bearings. I feel like iv served my time at Bavaria on this thing. But u know what. What a great car. Still drives brilliant. And if saved a small fortune using my own labour and experimenting with german autodoc company for parts. I'd take an e60 any day over a crappy vauxhall mate👍👍🤙

    I had two 2006 Cooper S’s. Both were great cars. I remember I did have a problem with the power steering pump because that fan that’s down below by the oil pan had failed on me. I loved the sound though,, the burble from the exhaust was very nice. That was a very good bullet proof engine which didn’t have the timing chain problem like the N20 does. I think they use that same engine in the PT Cruiser.

      I get that I think that’s just over your side you see as over here problems like that are slim and you would think that would be the opposite as we get a lot of rain here so the fan would pack up but that’s not the case the same with the crankshaft seal aswell you guys suffer with that and I believe that’s cause of the heat where we don’t it’s not common here as I always say I believe it’s the quality of parts used in factory there

      Yep this one does this is the S model not the normal ones with no turbo or supercharger I wouldn’t buy the normal you know me I don’t buy then normal junk it has to be SPORT or something nice otherwise I won’t even look at it I’m too good for that and too special as I tell everyone when I go to look at the car I tell them I’m better then them and make them feel like shit like the guy who owned it is watching he knows what I think about him

      Here cars are very very cheap that’s why all the Europeans come over here buy and take back over our cars are cheap cheap you can get m sport cars here e60 for 1500 all day 530i fully loaded that’s how cheap this country is e39 goes for about 1k m sport Mini Cooper s goes for about 2k
      That’s why here they have to be in mint condition because of mot nobody can have cars like that if they do it will fail mot and then the car will be worth even less for me it’s a bargain but I still wouldn’t buy as I have to have that outside my house and I have a reputation everyone that knows me knows I would NEVER ever buy some car like that IM TOOOOO OCD that’s why I suit RUclips nathan is the only one that buys cars like that
