    This is cool, I have had Minis with loss of power before and they present after a tow in with a fuel gauge showing 1/4 fuel and also an unsteady crank, the fault I have found is the tank has actually run dry and the gauge is showing a false reading that it has fuel, the engine has run lean and hurt piston(s) because of running lean.

    Hi Mario, valvetronic opens one intake valve on lower load cycles like start cycle, then in more load, open the other progressively, but in the video from the endoscope seems like the seat is completely messed up. Nice video, great content, instant subscribe!

    Excellent video Mario! N series engines are famous for dropping valve seats especially if overheated or right after machine shop work. At 13:50 you said there's no reason why one valve should be open and the other isn't (obviously speaking about the intake valves). As a matter of fact there is.
    These engines control the idle speed by altering the valve lift via an eccentric shaft and the eccentric shaft motor (valvetronic). The eccentric shaft has two lobes per cylinder (one for each valve); the lobes have different profiles. So, at idle, only the front (timing chain side of the engine) intake valve opens. The second intake valve doesn't open until the eccentric shaft hits approximately 150 degrees allowing more fuel and air to enter the cylinder ... more power. If there is a malfunction with the valvetronic system; the DME will use the throttle body to control idle speed as a secondary strategy.
    So when you scope a MINI N series engine; the position of the two intake valves will depend on the eccentric shaft position. If you want to set the eccentric shaft to zero lift, use a 4mm hex bit in the back of the eccentric shaft motor and rotate it counter clockwise until you hit the stop. This will put both intake valves in each cylinder at the fully closed position.
    If you pull up live data, look for the eccentric shaft position under the Valvetronic or valve gear menu. If the value is < 150 degrees; the two intake valves will be in different positions.

    • @SuperMarioDiagnostics
      @SuperMarioDiagnostics  8 месяцев назад +1

      The valvetronic system controls both intake valves at the same time, always. Not just one valve. That’s why the valvetronic system directly controls engine rpm. If it only controlled one of the two valves, it would not control the rpm of the engine. Hence there is no time where only one of the two valves should be open on a properly performing engine

      I’m gonna dig more into this. I’m looking for documentation on it but don’t see it. Next time i have one open I’ll confirm

    • @superk4562
      @superk4562 8 месяцев назад

      @@SuperMarioDiagnostics It's not well documented; I found this fact when I was troubleshooting a cylinder 2 misfire on my 2009 N12 MINI. In my case, the misfire occurred because the valve seat had dropped more than the valve lift (valve was not opening), so no fuel/air was entering the cylinder. The cylinder was actually under a vacuum when the piston was on the intake stroke. As you know, when you snap the throttle while monitoring the secondary ignition wave form, the KV line will increase due to the increase in combustion pressure. Conversely, when there is a vacuum in the cylinder, the KV line will decrease, and that's what I found on the scope.
      Once I had the cylinder head disassembled, I put a Starrett straight edge on the lobes of the eccentric shaft while rotating the eccentric shaft motor manually. That's when I found the lobes between the two intake valves on a single cylinder are not symmetrical; they are staggered; the shaft has to rotate more before the second valve will begin to open. I've got a picture of this, but there's not place to upload the photo here.

    Its a NA engine, these ones also have variable valve lift. If you do get approval for the repar. Make sure you check the excentric shaft for wear. These ones wear out alot and you end up with a bad idle or misfire at idle.

    with that valve staying open would a comp test not have showed a significant drop? wifes 08 today had a misfire code on #2 - comp test hit 180-190 on all 4- now it wont even start (sounds like your vid - cranks but doesnt run). All 4 coils had exact ohms across the 3 pins... Although I did leave the coils plugged in hanging near the exhaust shield when I did a comp test - hopefully I didnt blow anything? Also disconnected batt for 3 hours to reset ecu - thoughts?

As far as I can remember (was a few years back) I did an engine rebuild on one of these mini’s a few years ago for a similar misfire issue but we used the cylinder leak down check to find the issue after doing the oul plugs/coil swaparu trick. I’m sure we ended up also pulling pistons and rods and replacing the piston rings too...! To be fair the are a complete POS engine !

    Hi, I have a problem with my Mini Cooper s r56 not start.
    The only code the mini have is: A0B4
    The mini was on taking it out of the garage when it suddenly turned off. The first Scanner have these codes:
    2781
    2775
    2D52
    *2DCA*
    275F
    272F
    I changed 4 spark plugs, 4 coils, the Camshaft Position Sensor and a new battery. But it did not turn on, now it is giving these codes:
    005E31
    009314
    *00A0B4*
    00932D
    009CB5
    I deleted them and it only gives me this code: ( A0B4 )
    The mini starter good but not start.
    I try the new battery and it says it's ok, but when I test the battery with the terminals mounted on the Mini Cooper it says it's bad I don’t now why. I also reset the new battery in the mini system with the scanner but nothing.
    ( A0B4 )
