Yes thinking the same, they should always be taken out the box over the workbench or away from engine bay. Certainly never near an inspection pit, mine always had a water/oil mixture in the bottom, up to three feet deep in prolonged wet weather, it was never tanked, not a problem until the surrounding farm and woodland was built on.
It’s either fallen on the engine under tray or possibly got wedged on the rear section of the front subframe near where the power steering pump/rack is
I was about to do a service on my car but you’ve convinced me to just buy the oil and not put it in, replace three spark plugs and throw one randomly into the engine bay. Top tip. 👍
You are not wrong, get plug leads mixed up = world of hurt. Back in 1985 I had a 1976 BMW 320i 4cyl. After a Bosch service, I went to visit & stay the weekend with my Grand Parents down M5, on rapid acceleration the car would cough & hiccup, local garage sold me a lead, no better, spent the weekend trying to make it better somehow distributor leads got mixed up & it wouldn't start, triople checking with Haynes manual in boot got that sorted. Got home, turned out Fuel filter was partially blocked, should have been done during bosch service, one replaced all good 😱
I've been having similar problems with my Volvo 960. Replaced the spark plugs a little while ago which made no difference. I asked the garage to look at it whilst it was in for it's MOT, they did that and advised changing all the coils. I've done that this evening and it seems to be running smoother. Fingers crossed!
@@furiousdriving shouldn't anymore as it's now garaged. I acquired the car about six months ago as a little bit of fun. Probably your indirect influence if I'm honest. But loving the experience. I've got a Honda Civic as my everyday car, but the Mini just makes me smile.
Owning a Mini cooper r50 is fun. My wifes 04 model has the runflat tyres which have been a constant pain (Often seem to deflate through bead sealing area although the wheels are not pitted ) and then run flat lol. Hopefully the spark plug shows up eventually. The breakers yard I visit appears to be getting plenty in at the moment I look forward to the day people start to see them as a future classic because the early models are the best in my opinion.
I, like many others here, am wondering where the dropped spark plug has gone... but I'm also pleased you've binned off the registration of "Hippo" - I suppose it's my inner prude but I always felt a bit uncomfortable seeing that plate on that car. Returning to the Mini - is that a "wasted spark" system with just two coils?
Matt question - Even though depending on who you talk to that BMW may have wanted Rover for the Mini as its plan, or maybe they just saw an opportunity when it wanted to sell the company... why didn't they use the K-series for the R50 Mini? That instead of building that Tritec engine (which was an okay engine but not as advanced as the k-series) in Brazil when we had engine production facilities in the UK. Something very fishy was going on, had BMW already decided to sell Rover and was creating its own engine for that breakaway? They could have just taken the K-series?! I just think that the R50 mini being predominattly a Rover design with BMW direction, not having the K-series under the bonnet is why this lacks the British feeling that other Rover products had.
I always marked the leads with a band of white or red electrical tape, 1 band for number one and so on depending on number of cylinders. The V8's had different colours for left and right banks so only needed up to four bands on them. Dots of white or red nail varnish on the distributor cap.
I had the same problem with my 2004 John Cooper Works last month. Low mileage, 11k, so hardly used. Same problem, misfire under load. I guess due to the engine being started and stopped whilst car being moved around garage, it had choked up. I put a bottle of Cataclean in, took it for a spin and back to perfect again..Cleaned the carbon build up out.
These mini service videos are great. Maybe the stuff on the connector for the HT lead was contact grease similar to the stuff you put on battery terminals? Also, worth putting some copper grease on the spark plug threads so they don’t cease for next time?
There's more insulation between you and the road with new tyres, when you have a greater weight in the car like a full tank you tend to hit bumps rather than glide over them.
God anything that disappears into the engine bay is usually a goner… unless it’s the Volvo as their engine bay has epic space 🤣 glad you fixed the Mini, it’s such a funky little thing.
if your having latency issues with the throttle, i would strongly advise a fuel filter change.bmw say this is a lifetime part - it sure isnt. they mean life time of the vehicle and realistically i would do it everk 80k. Also, the cover for the steering column hole has fallen down and it would explain the cabin noise.
Got a new Vax carpet shampoo machine the pump on the shampoo spray went after one car shampoo so got a replacement and that went too, maybe because I was using hot water, like the clear nozzle they used to have you could see the colour of the water being drawn out of the seats which didn't come out anything less than black the first five times ! ! ##$¥¥÷¢$$
I must admit,i just cant find any love for the bmw minis, they just arnt minis, way to big outside yet to small inside.completeley the opposite to what a mini should be and the latest ones really are ridiculous.good to hear the volvo flew its test tho.👍

The thought on everyone’s mind right now is “what happened to the missing spark plug and have you found it”?! 😂

Did you find the missing spark plug Matt in the engine bay? I find if you tap the underside cover they pop out some where.
Great little tinkering video, good to see the Mini getting some love. Hope you have a good day at Radwood.
Nice and simple. Hope you find the errant plug though. Ooop!
We need to know 😖

I have an R50 and have just found a rusty fourth connector. Your video has really helped me, thank you.

Result. Good to hear the Mini is happy again and the Volvo got straight through the MOT. Hope you found the spark plug

You cannot build up all that suspense and not tell us - What happened to the missing spark plug?
Its a cliff hanger...
@@furiousdriving Hanging around the streets of Cliffe then 😀 ( An area outside Rochester for those not from North Kent)
The MINI filter canister requires a 36 mm socket. And a short one at that!
The leads should be marked 1 2 3 4
As should the coil pack be
Nice easy fix new plugs and lead and the new Mini runs well
If you are taking the Rover Coupe does that mean the rocker cover gasket has been done?
That missing spark plug would keep me awake at night 🙂
Ditto!

Where is the plug.... I think you wrote the new Volvo MoT expiry date a month earlier than it is.

HT leads have cylinder numbers on the lead. So you can't get it wrong
Nice mini can the mini do a 0 to 60
You have stored the new plug for later use.
No clutch ignition switch?
nope
The clutch starter interlock is a US/Canada only thing from what I understand. Only installed since the 1980s per legislation.
