I’ve had mine since new as only owner. 19years old. I’ve serviced it myself and maintained it myself. The only issues I’ve had in 19 years is the door lock cable pops out which I glued back in, and brakes worn. Not bad for 19 years use. Even the aircon still works!!!
Awesome
Sir, you left your lightsabre on...
I bought the Cooper S F56 at 8000km. Now 127000km. 1 repair (purge valve/breather valve). Price 85 euros. (15 minutes work)
otherwise no problems.
Music doesn't add a thing to your video. Makes the narrator hard to understand.
@@lightningstrikestwice6302he didn’t make the video just left a comment 😅
Mini Coopers are actually harder to service and maintain than a Mustang. If you actually end up owning this car for 5 years, you will spend around 8-12k repairing/replacing parts. My younger sister had a 2021 hardtop S model. After 2 years, she ended up hitching rides in my 2018 Sonata and her boyfriend's 2020 Si all the time because the Cooper had leaks and rattled loudly and didn't pick up speed past 3000 rpm. She was tired of fixing it and paying all that cash to repair it. It was fun while it lasted, though. Great fun.
How many km or miles did it have roughly?
That is what scares me about buying one is getting nickeled and dimed out of money that could have gone to a more reliable and prob 85% as fun and quirky car. I'm already getting out of a car with tons of little issues (Fiat 500)
I fixed the auto selector park issue myself. The issue is a tiny broken spring. I took the unit apart, it’s a bit fiddly but took me all in about 4 hrs most of that was getting to it without snapping trim. just unwound one turn on the spring and it’s been good for 4 years.
Music a distraction and unnecessary but thanks for heads up!
I genuinely loved my used 6-Speed 2005 MINI Cooper S (R53). However, I got burnt by it and its constant need for repairs! My last straw was when I had to drop $2K at the mechanic for repairs only for the car to still act up. I finally decided to sell it. Granted, I did upgrade both the supercharger and crankshaft pulleys to aluminum performance so my MINI it did not perform “as originally built”. I love the MINI brand and its heritage and would love to get into one but the mechanical nightmare left me with a bad taste. Greetings from the US! 🇺🇸
Thank you for watching and sharing your experience
Since all the problems are mini in size, there's nothing to worry about.
The price of repairs is not mini though. 🤔
I'm Mini and need repairs @65
lol that's funny
What model paceman would you recommend. Would the 15/16 be a better option too
Thank you for this video. Doing some research on the pros and cons of the Mini before
I buy one.
Thank you for watching
@@itsimty May be off topic but need advice. Can buy a 2011 Mini off a lady going through a divorce for $3,000. Fax looks good from what I can tell except one minor accident 4 years ago that rear ended a car and set off air bags. Grille and bumper was replaced and repainted. See nothing that worry’s me other then it has 170,000 mikes on it. $3,000 a good buy? 2011 Mini automatic a good car?
Had a first gen (r53) Cooper S, cracking car with the supercharger whine, great handling and fast enough, probably the most fun car to drive that I've ever owned. Downsides constants oil leaks, noisy electric steering pump, had a pulley reduction on mine without changing the intercooler (my own fault) which cause the supercharger to overheat and damaged the bearings making the blades to touch and sent metal pieces into the engine, horrible mpg. If you're a car guy who likes to contantly look after your car definitely get one if you're not and need some more peace of mind, then stay away from them
Thank you for your input and Thank you for watching.
You forgot to mention erratic window module. You press up while parked and it goes half way and comes back down and this happens over and over until you start driving. My 08 Mini has 248K miles and runs like a champ. It has experienced almost every issue you mention but I do all my own mechanical work so It hasn't been too bad. Great car and 40mpg feels great!
I have a mini cooper s 2016 when it's cold it stalls and dies if it's in gear but when it's warm it works I don't know if it's the timing chain or something else like a solenoid
Hi wud u be fit to give me some guidance on my daughters mini one 2014, every so often when she driving NOT ALL THE TIME it bolts her to the left hand side for not 5-10 seconds loose’s power a bit then recorrects itself & drive normal, we’ve had to into 2 different garages put on computer twice & no one can find wats wrong with it, it might do it 1-3 on a journey then might not do it next day then will do it again 1-3 times another day, I’m worried cause it done it on a corner last week while my daughter was driving any advice wud br greatful at this point as no one can fix something they can’t find wats wrong. Thank u Siobhan Fullerton
Hi I have a clubman 59 1.6 petrol.
The heater wasn’t working at all.
Changed the resistor 3 times still not working. (Got sick n tired of driving without any heaters)
Clipped wire on to resistor earthed it on to door hinge n boom heater works perfectly except blows only at full power.
Now I’m wondering if it’s the control unit or is there a bad earth wire going to the resistor??
Has anyone had this problem or is there anyone that can shed some light on this.
I really appreciate any advice on what it could possibly be.
Thank you
Naz
Have the same issue with my 2017 Mini gear selector. Doesn’t know it’s in park
Thank god i haven't had any real problems with mine, I've been driving her since 2018 and its rock solid till now
Excellent
I love my Mini. Never had any problems and driven all over Europe in it. It’s the 1.5 3 cylinder petrol engine in the Mk3 (R56) which is far more reliable than the 1.6 4 cylinder petrol engine in the Mk2 (F56).
I have ecb switch failure the sports is not engaging and manual mode is not engaging but is working fine
Hey guys, do yall know any good mechanic for Mini in Dallas TX?
What do you use for diagnostic software? I have a 2004 r50 Cooper with the CVT transmission. I have been looking for a Diagnostic tool capable of resetting the clutch and gear ratio adaptations. I did a trans filter and fluid service and now it seems that it is slipping from a stop. The snap-on tool with European software on it does not allow me to access CVT clutch adaptation reset.
Very Well explained, thank you. currently i own an i20n, used to have a N14 ds3 and n18 208 gti mk1. İ was afraid to buy a used r56 Cooper S. İ think Mini owner should be the first owner and take care of it or no. Being an Nthusiast love my baby blue N car but maybe One day mini cooper JCW hopefully...
ive got a 2009 diesel cooper and it drives in first gear then put it into second and it drives for a second then just revs and wont drive so i stop put it into first again and let off the clutch and it moves off of the tick over but when i try to use power it just revs again its like the drive just turns off theres no slip etc and then the next day i try again and it drives and then revs again any clue on what could be the problem as i think the clutch bites well
Mini Cooper, the 65 plate, you did a video on what milage does the timing chain start to go.
I really tried to love my mini, but constant breakdowns and £500+ bills every time, then cost me £260 a week for a hire car every time.
I will never touch one again. I'm 50 and this was the worst car I have ever, ever bought.
The rest of the car is very good, but this N14 Peugeot engine is utter rubbish.
It is a one large issue. I know it, but thank you very much for a true story.
Thank you for watching
Best ever vehicle information delivered spot on.
Hi, thanks for great educational video. I looking to buy 2008 Clubman for my wife, she love them but the one she’d like to buy have that infamous “french” N12 1.6 118bhp engine paired with manual box. Is this engine really that bad? Cheers
PS! The six speed manuall transmission is the only transmission that should ever be in any Mini.
It’s better to buy clubman after 2015 with bmw engine or at least with n16(Clubman after 2011)
Hey guys. I have JCW Clubman. It has an issue of making a ticking sound after switching the engine off, it happens a lot after driving with high speed. Should i get worried? Please advice.
just ur exhaust cooling down.. means you drove good.
The US Better Business Bureau received complaints about the Mini Cooper Footwell Module unit (FRM).
Questions:
1. Is the FRM a known defective part? If so, shouldn’t the FRM unit be recalled and replaced for free instead of customers being encouraged to pay over $2,000 (USD) for an extended parts warranty?
This could be a major car safety issue, even in 3rd generation Minis!
2. Is the FRM damaged every time the car battery is replaced? If so, the repair could tentatively be over $1,500, including labor for a new car battery and new FRM unit, every 4-5 years.
3. What assurances do customers have when purchasing a pre-owned Mini? (i.e. Have the car batteries and FRM units been thoroughly inspected, calibrated, repaired and/or replaced?
The Mini service advisor cannot just tell owners of pre-owned Minis that the car was purchased “AS IS” and expect the customer to pay for potentially known defective parts.
There are some questions that need to be answered by the Mini Cooper/BMW corporation to the customers.
Buyers beware! Check your US state for car lemon laws.
These or MK2 Audi TT?
Surely the problems should be split between motors. As many problems are not common across the models.
These are just some of the common problems we have seen as a specialist, Thank you for watching
@@itsimty yes I get that from the video title. But for example the first gem cars suffered with overheating issues with the Chrysler engines. The second gen engines from the psa group suffered badly with cam chain issues. If someone with a 3rd generation car now thinks their car is prone to any of these issues then your video wouldn’t have helped.
Much better to divide the video up into 3 sections, one for each generation.
I agree with Chris these problems are not across the range and can be misleading.
@@ChrisE1965- well they are a workshop so a bit general worry flushing a few customers their way is probably something they can live with 😊😊
@@ChrisE1965 I agree, G tech should be more specific about model ranges, because there are big differences among them. Mine MINI is 2020 ONE version with manual gearbox ( I love it!) with 40 k , without ANY issues so far. BMW has made many improvements with time. I'm just changing oil, and oil/air filters more frequently that factory recommendations.
What year models is he talking about? All gen minis of all engine types have same issues? there’s a lot of nuance not addressed here. Common issues on say a 2014 won’t be the same with a 2021. Manufacturers address these faults with each gen.
I agree, it sounds like he's mostly talking about the R56, not the F56. The BMW B48 has proven reliability in the last decade
Yes, all issues associated with the old 1.6 4 cylinder petrol engine in the R56 second generation. The 1.5 3 cylinder turbo BMW engine is excellent and used reliably across the BMW range including the new X1 and even the i8!
Iv got a 1.6 petrol no turbo or changer just dun rocker gasket but its struggling to rev up its holding its revs just no rev dun all leads and coil pack an spark plugs got no leeks in oil or water side its had new belts both ov them no lights on dash or dyno
i have used F55, F56 in the last year. both came up with Drivetrain issue
What engine?
A lot of the stuff you mentioned are issues from models that came before the F series.
My mini has erro code 29 Engine Problem, Power Reduce. How do I fix this
how does a metal chain possibly stretch? or do you mean wear?
They stretch lol
U ever seen an issue with a gen 3, 3cyl misfire due to injector faults
How's the diesel version
Keep in touch ...
2019 minis have a problem with back brakes
I am about to buy a 2011 r56 diesel mini couper d, do you think I will have problems or is it well made as a car and engine being diesel?
Did u buy ??
Get a f56
Thanks for this video, you literally inspired me further NOT to buy pre-owned mini haha
Allways mini problems 😂. I changed the air filter. Spark plugs and coil pack and now get worse mpg than the old clogged filter and rusty coil pack. 🤔
I have had to change two window cassettes on the two cars that I have owned .. wish they had manual wind up windows .. and don’t start me on opening the boot !!!
The diesel ones are super reliable.
Every morning my 2008 mini cooper struggles to rev up, stutters and judders almost to a standstill...then it kicks in and drives away. Likely a fuel injection problem...but mechanics at garage couldn't come up with an answer...! As a result I have a love hate relationship with the Mini
I can't understand why people say bad I've had mine for 5 years it's been very 🤞good 2013 960000 still doing great the footwell is under recall
What years or models can one get that are NOT BMW manufactured???? I'm just getting interested in these and love the little car-- HOW expensive are parts? Labor etc. compared to other cars? WHAT would you recommend as an ALTERNATIVE to this car but similar????
They're all BMW. BMW created this new shape of mini after acquiring The Rover Group way back in 1998, which included the brands Mini, Land Rover, Range Rover, MG etc. They sold everything except Mini and acquired the Rolls Royce name a few years later.
Great info thanks, music is annoying, can just about hear you
Water pump leaks and failure common place on this model and oil loss
Thank you for Watching
Great advice but damn that music is annoying. Too loud.
engineered to bring it back to BMW dealer service department.
The red light is very distracting
Shame the class actions suit for the timing chain that was won in the USA didn't do crap to help the European Mini buyers. Never going back to Mini again.
My 2017 clubman bucking, losing power
Could be a engine mount if it’s bucking they are prone to going
@Doppo69 No, it was water in the transmission from a cracked oil cooler.
@@Gerry-fw9pp oh that’s not good! Hows reliability been in general? I’m supposed to be buying a 2016 copper s tomorrow I’m abit nervous
@@Doppo69 maintenance is key
@@Gerry-fw9pp it’s been serviced every year it’s done 28000 miles but it’s had 4 owners and a resonator delete which tells me it’s been boy raced… not sure it’s 11k pounds
Essentially exactly the same car .
I beg to differ.
All english men are the same
Turn the “ music “ off, please
I like how the BMW mini went from mediocre, to good, to great, to completely awful.
So like most modern cars - full of issues
…still looking to buy a Paceman S 😉
let the Japanese make this Mini
Skip the music ,it doesnt add anything but distraction.
Thankyou this is a very old video music is not an issue now, thank you for the watch
In another word, I would just stick with Toyota and Lexus.
Its not a real mini its a we paid for the name and made a terrible job of it, and they have lots of problems my friends petrol sounds like a diesel nobody would take it of her hands thay all said its fkt, mini said o they can sound like that sometimes but there's nothing wrong with it .
Thank you for watching
Is there anything that dosnt go wrong, id stay clear of these cars wow they are a nightmare.
Nothing about hard starts cold, stalling, HPFP issues, carbon buildup on the valves. Nothing about the real issues that can get you killed on a highway in the USA. But he's British maybe they don't drive over 25 kilometers per hour.
Regular servicing as with any car is the key...if you want an ultra reliable car, go Hyundai or Kia...
Make sure your Hyundai or Kia cars have installed immobilizer software. I recently rented a 2023 Kia Soul that had a sticker to warn potential car thieves that the immobilizer software was installed in the car. Also, Hyundai and Kia’s catalytic converters are routinely stolen.
I find your explanation somewhat generally negative without mentioning the correct engine type. It would have been better if you had done the 1st generation and the 2nd generation mini separately. I have a 2nd generation mini with the 1.5t 3 cylinder petrol. I have no complaints so far, 6 years and 120dkm
its normal for a bmw engine to loss oil everywhere from the engine..... since 70 years lolll
Minis are fun to drive. But cheaply made (but expensive) plastic parts and modern BMW reliability let the side down. Don't buy one unless you have a healthy budget and patience for repairs.
Bad video as lumping all generations together and not clear what gen he's talking about and not going into much depth
I agree can’t he just talk about the one he’s standing next to 3rd generation 1.5 3 cylinder for example
Although stood by a third generation, the problems he’s talking about are mostly second generation issues with the 1.6 petrol 4 cylinder engine which was Peugeot Citroen design. The BMW 1.5 3 cycle dear engine in the 3rd generation is very reliable.

Agreed, useless misleading video really
These cars are a horrible money pit! Be aware stay away from all mini's wife's clubman transmission went bad at 60k, uncountable battery replacements, trim pieces falling off, drive shaft, oil leaks from evrywhere! eats tyres like crazy, they do look nice, but the quality they offer 4 the money is baddddddd 👎 👃 👎
They sound like FN nighmares!
German rubbish in this case , VW same engines rattling from new , I wood not recommend one .
Thank you for watching
The unreliable engine in the second generation is French (Peugeot Citroen design). The BMW engine in the 3rd generation is pretty reliable.
Mini coper brakes sucks... 😂😂😂
Whats that light
Mini has no problems.
2001?
How is that?
I bought the first one in 2002.
I did order it in the spring of 2001 when I was deployed in the army?
How is that?
Can you prove it with data and documents.
I believe you are lying.
