Kat Graham is so gorgeous and so is her natural hair. I think it’s stupid that the show and hollywood wanted her to cover her beautiful hair. She’s so precious.
They casted very attractive actors. Every actress on the show looked very polished all the time: hair extensions, wigs, straightened hair, fake eyelashes, heavy make up. They sell this vampire world dream to teenagers.
No one had any wigs on vampire diaries lol. Not unless it was a flashback
What I found so disheartening about this is that part of Bonnie's character identity is her coily/curly/frizzy (red) hair. They REALLY would have won me over if they showed off Kat's natural hair!

I wish Hollywood showed more love to dark skinned girls and their natural beautiful hair. It makes me sad that most dark girls in movies have slick hair which makes young girls feel like they need slick thin hair and that ruin their self esteem. Dark skin is beautiful! Zazie Beetz has her natural hair and I think she advocates for it. And from what I've seen viola Davis is going back to her natural hair. Their hair is amazing and people in general shouldn't feel like they need to change their hair or face to feel beautiful.

You can probably tell from my dp that I have the same complexion and hair as Kat, and like her I love wearing it big, but it's still not considered "professional". I'm pretty lucky that my job doesn't give a shit, but sadly it's not like that for everyone

As a Latina and living in a latin American country I haven't seen this kind of discrimination. I think curly hair is beautiful and I loved the way black women in the 70s used to wear their hair. The closes comments I got once about having long hair is that " only maids grow their hair long" this comments are mostly made to indigenous women because they work as maids most of the times and most people in my country think that looking indigenous or brown is something to be ashamed of.

@@SuperToocool4skool commenting on someone's hair, when they are sharing their struggles with it publically, is perfectly acceptable. We can understand and empathize with someone's pain without having to experience that "exact" pain for ourselves. Where there are OPEN conversations, there is understanding and acceptance. We are all people and we've all struggled with coming to terms with our appearance!
I don't have hair like hers, but it made me cry to think that she felt this way about her hair for this long. Hollywood and our society as a whole need to stop portraying black hair as not beautiful and less desirable.

@@LTMoore-yy1lm I don't think it's that deep... She just said she has natural hair, not that she was 'all natural". She mentioned she stopped relaxing it in the early 2010s. What I was saying is the natural didn't mean her skin care routine, it just meant the current state of her hair.
I can relate to this SO BAD! I am African and I hated my hair for 23 years. It just was never good enough and people would make fun of it. I am 26. and It took me to see Lupita Nyong'o on the red carpet of twelve years slave, with her natural hair, for me to start loving mine. REPRESENTATION IS HUGE and so important you guys. Nobody never taught me how to take care of my fro because my family members don't know any better either.thanks to natural hair youtubers today my hair is the healthiest It has ever been and I am crying typing this. Lupita has a place in my heart. Can you imagine what a difference it would have been if I had seen disney princesses with real afro when I was a child?! No Moana and no pocahontas or any princess with dark skin but long hair. I am talking about a real afro.

I can't understand the pain you must have felt, im so angry society makes it acceptable to tell girls that ruining their scalps by gluing down wigs and sewing in weaves so tightly it causes damage, is better than their natural hair. You should be allowed to wear wigs and weaves because you like it, not because you know itll affect you getting a job, being treated with dignity and respect, being in public, existing. @@RKhere97 oh yeah. My hair was being called "bush" in high school. I grew up in Italy and those kids would just come and plunge their hands in my hair without asking permission. when i would have my weaves on, they would make fun of me and ask me if it was mine. basically I was shamed for having either natural hair or a weave.
I'm not of African descent and don't have curly hair, but damn, can't believe we are still promoting straight or smooth hair is the beauty norm. Definitely not okay! We need to promote more diversity in every aspect. Plus, I always find curly and kinky so beautiful, I feel that people with natural curls are so much more captivating.

Especially considering that straight hair evolved from curly hair. I'm 36:and I'm half black, and just in the last few years I got over my "need" to straighten my hair, and I'm so much more happy. And my hair is insanely soft now too.

I have wavy hairs, very light waves and I almost destroyed my hair just to get the curly hair. I adore curls, I don’t think I am going to try something extreme in the future but for my glam looks, I always curl my hair. So sexy (not me, but the curls)

If youre white and you have a biracial child you NEED to learn how to do their hair without making them feel like its difficult. Our hair isnt complicated. We need our parent or caregiver to show us how to care for our hair. In the past, these hair traditions were passed down through the mother.

this is so important. my husbands mom has five young black kids (she’s white) with super thick and kinky hair and she’s spent years learning how to do their cornrows and box braids and sew-ins and all that and she does a beautiful job. she runs a family preservation center and one of their resources is braiding classes for white foster parents who are temporarily caring for black kids and literally no one comes or tries. it’s rejected by almost everyone who needs it. i wish more people would look for things like that because they’re out there and the ignorance on that subject is very real.
The thing is not all mixed-race hair come out like Kat whose hair has Afro hair but with Caucasian features. Take the actress Nathalie Emmanuel another mixed race but her hair is wavy, what this means is her hair can be gelled when it is wet.

I finally tossed the straighteners after burning my hair to a crisp from years of frying, wore a wig for a year to repair and regrow and now I just put on a big fluffy jacket and sit in front of my fan til my hair dries 🤣. Fuck heat and fuck having to have that straight hair look to fit in or look professional

Right, even at 12 with no knowledge of skincare, I just bought whatever popular drugstore brand facewash was available and looked cool.
Be shocked. I'am 51 years old and until 2 years ago when my skin rebel the abused, I washed my face with fragrance soap. I used to have natural great skin and I never suffered acne so I never put any attention to my face.
But a couple of years ago my skin face got so sensitive than even water hurt me. Now, I don't use soaps and fragrance never touch my skin,, i even use sunscreen. Never is too late.

I think her mom lost a huge opportunity when she took her to the salon, she should've actually talked to the stylist while she was getting her hair done, ask questions, figure it out. Also would've been a great bonding moment because I'm sure as a kid she felt so lost about her hair, and wanted mom to care.

It's true that a lot of white parents lose the opportunity to learn about their child's curly hair. As a little girl, I used to be so obsessed with the Rapunzel storybook when I was a kid. My mom noticed and threw it out! I would stand in the shower with shampoo in my hair and slick it back wishing my hair could stay that way. My mom would always scold me saying that my hair was never going to be like that and made me stop. I cut my hair so many times hoping it would grow out a wavier texture. It wasn't until I grew that I realised how much my mother's actions helped me accept my own hair. Non of the women on TV looked like me so of course, i thought something was wrong with mine. My mom never let me get relaxers, been natural all my life. I never used fake hair either so I was left with no choice but acceptance. I'm also grateful for RUclips. I have learned so much from here how to take care of my hair and now I love it sooooooo much that I honestly wouldn't trade if for straight hair if that was ever an option. Representation matters!!
I am a white ass girl with naturally coily-curly hair. Both of my parents are white with Northern European heritage so I’m not mixed. I’ve been complimented so many times and so many older women have commented saying they’ve been trying to get curly hair for decades. My best friend in middle school is mixed, Asian and Nigerian. She has that kinky coily hair and I’ve seen people that would tell me my hair is great turn around and tell her that her hair is bad. I always saw her reaction to it and how defeated she became, so I had to say something whenever I saw this. I understand my privilege in this situation, and I’ll always recognize it. Anytime I see someone with kinky coily hair feel terrible about their hair from other people telling them it looks bad, I remember my friend. Wishing everyone who goes through this love & positive experiences with the world. 💜💜 I’m so sorry y’all go through it. It isn’t right.

When I watched her video I cried too. Being in quarantine really changed how I see myself. I stopped wearing makeup, and got an amazing skin care routine, I started wearing my natural hair out and taking better care of it:..and I’ve just been loving me and embracing my natural beauty.

This made me boohoo cry! I can totally relate to Her journey - growing up our hair wasn’t acknowledged as Beauty - I fell in love with my hair at 34 years old!! At 36 I can’t imagine my life without out my locs - I realized after years of damaging it -with sew ins and other weave styles that I thought I needed to be considered beautiful- that my natural hair was the key to me accepting my natural beauty. So yeah definitely an emotional video because once upon time I wouldn’t dare leave my house without a sew in - now I couldn’t imagine getting one now - I love my naps!
The bias against natural hair is so real. I'm middle eastern and white, so obviously I cannot speak to the experiences of black people or those with afro-kinky hair, but I grew up with very curly and frizzy hair. I also didn't know how to take care of my own hair because I was only really raised by the white side of my family. I used to hate my hair and straighten it every day until it was so damaged it would just snap off. I've had hair dressers put relaxer in my hair without telling me because they said it would "make me look prettier". Many years later I struggle with alopecia, and its made me realize how I never loved and took care of my hair enough when I had it (my pfp is a wig btw). So I sympathize deeply with the struggles many black people have with embracing their natural hair. Its so beautiful and we should love it no matter what some hateful people may tell us.
I’m Latina and I got her hair struggles as well because just like her I’ve been going through it with my hair as of lately too. And yes generally using your natural hair is greatly seen as bad or unkept...my natural hair is frizzy highly so and puffy and hard to work with.....so I understand even though I’m not African American. I understand deeply so that I’ve started using wigs to take more care of my natural hair and without putting much pressure from heat styling tools and things like that like hair dyes as well. It’s hard to find good hair products that work for you.

Kat Graham is so naturally gorgeous. I can honestly relate to not knowing how to do your own hair. I have 4c natural hair and it been a struggle. I also had cystic acne in the past, the "ahaa" moment when you realize everything is going to be okay, and you find something that finally works is such an emotional journey of self-love and self-acceptance. In any case, the makeup removing part of her routine and the not applying spf was HARD to watch though lol.
The Dior is worse than you think, the Dior website has the full ingredient list (its more than just almond oil) it has fragrance and other harsh ingredients

Zoe K. It doesn’t cause issues for most people. Fragrance isn’t bad for everyone. A small amount of people can’t tolerate it so that small amount should avoid it. I’ve never heard that about melasma but I’ve never had melasma before so I haven’t done a ton of research on it. I know it’s caused by the sun and or heat.
@@ccap3211 fragrance is unnecessary in skincare and makeup products. I developed an allergy to fragrance in my teens by using scented products my whole life. Fragranced products are generally not recommended by dermatologists. It's added for marketing purposes.
Ash I totally agree. But I think people make it out to be worse than it is. If someone’s favorite product has fragrance in it and they haven’t developed an allergy to it then there’s no reason to tell them to stop using it. Fragrance makes products more enjoyable to use. I prefer my hair and body products to have them. And on occasion I don’t mind a small amount of fragrance in my skincare products.
So what y’all might not know is that Bonnie, her character in The Vampire Diaries, is a white redhead girl in the book (and Elena is blonde). What I want to say with this is that when they cast her, the series people already made a decision to make a massive physical departure from the source material, there was no reason for that (straight/wavy) wig other than as she said they not wanting to show her real hair. And I’m sorry, but that’s making me so mad I feel I could wrestle Godzilla right now.

sisonke mantanga the way a blow dryer works, the cold air setting is still heat. Its better to just air dry. But that takes so long which is why its often such a frustrating process to maintain natural hair. I get why Kat was upset, Im mixed and have had her problems before too. You can shorten the air dry time by using a microfiber hair towel. Or an old tshirt made of pure cotton. It also dries faster with less product in it.

Quarantine has definitely changed me. I've stopped wearing full coverage foundation whenever I leave the house for the first time since I was about 14/15 (I'm 24 now). I have hormonal acne on my cheeks and jaw but I've been going out with it completely bare the past few weeks. The only makeup I've used is brow gel and pencil, mascara and under eye concealer. The feeling of feeling free and not caring about what other people think far outweighs the feeling of 'beauty' and the constant worry of has my foundation rubbed around my glasses, sunk in my fine lines or melted off my face. I still have a long way to go but it's the first time since prepuberty I have felt ok with my skin, thanks to this channel.
Kat is absolutely GORGEOUS!! And somehow her skin is flawless despite her skincare regimen being straight trash. Hopefully, like she learned to care for her hair, she’ll learn to take better care of her skin too!

I honestly think all black woman's hair are literally stunning like its just so so natural and sometimes they don't realise how unique it is. there hair just expresses there culture and its so interesting to see how they look after it and style it. I think it would be nice too see Kat with her natural hair playing as herself.

My 2 year old son is mixed and has 3b/3c hair (mine is more 2b) and I have made a conscious effort to educate, learn, buy the proper products, and take good care of his hair daily. Even though he’s so young, my goal is to model to him the appropriate hair care for his hair type as well as to celebrate his beautiful curls. My prayer is that every parent learns how to properly care for their child’s curls and teaches them from an early age to embrace/love them, by modeling that positive behaviour early on. 💛

My reaction to Kat Graham skincare routine:
Using a makeup wipes : I cringe
Using a Dior sweet almond oil for 69$ and applied it with the wipes : deep breath
Using a serum straight after and striking the dropper right into her skin : I cried
Then suddenly, I realize that she doesn't clean her face properly and doesn't use moisturizer and sunscreen but her skin still looks great : I'm dead
I loved her humor and character and how she is so awake and pumped meow meow love you cassandra
I’ve watched Kats vid several times. Having type 4 hair in this world really isn’t easy Bt the journey of self love and acceptance is beautiful, important and hard. This was the only vogue video I’ve ever watched that deeply resonated with me and made my cry. An important beautiful message that many can empathize with and black women can realllllllllllllly understand. I’m glad you were able to feel it, your type 3 hair is beautiful and so is your heart.

My fiancé literally has perfect, blemish free, radiant, supple skin. And he “cleanses” his face WATER. Honestly so annoying when I have a full ass skincare routine, am so cautious and picky when it comes to ingredients and do extensive amounts of research when it comes to my skin care products and my skin is STILL struggling. Completely unfair.🙄

This title is a little misleading. Her video says "natural hair" beauty routine. Referring to the fact that she doesn't straighten her hair. It's not a natural skincare routine.
“Natural hair” refers to hair that hasn’t been chemically processed (hair that hasn’t been relaxed).

I'm a Caucasian woman with curly hair. It was hard because not only is it a straight hair girls world, but I did not relate with most of my Caucasian friends hair. People told me I was gross that I don't brush my hair because all my white friends did. It was assumed that because I was white that I had straight hair so there was no guidance on how to manage it. All I knew is how to straighten the life out of it. I'm 23 and it wasn't until 1 year ago I learned how to manage curly hair. Before I was so ashamed to go out in public with my natural hair. It was a frizzy ratty and an uneven mess until recently that i started going to someone who specializes in cuts for curly hair and how to manage it. I still have some shame wearing it natural but at least it's not a mess anymore.

@@eliko8482 @Eli ko For people with highly sensitive and irritable skin like mine, tap water which contains alot of heavy metals can leave your skin red and irritated. Bottled watter is slightly on the acidic side so it isn't preferred either. While Evian spray IS mostly water it isn't just regular water, it's spring water! It contains alot of essential minerals that can help calm your skin and prevent eczema or acne to an extent. Thermal sprays are widely used in French skincare.
If it works for her, it works for her. Period

I don't have curly hair, I was never discriminated because of my hair, but when I hear/read about people being discriminated because of something that is natural to them (hair, skin colour, body shape...) I always get teary eyed. 😢 Her hair are so beautiful. ❤

I spent a shit hon of money on amazing products and in the end the only thing that helped was drinking more water and eating healthy. Multivitamins and Omega 3 supplements helped as well.

Omg I cried too! Totally understand the struggles of not knowing how to take care of my hair or skin I am going to be 30 yrs old and I did become happy in my own skin until covid I have cystic acne and 3.5 curls that frizz like crazy but I found the products that work for me and the proper vitamins now I just am happy with curls and my acne scars and that confidence has helped how others see me!

Wonderful reaction video. I have had natural hair off and on for years. My hair was relaxed at 4. It is a struggle learning how to care for the a texture you never learned to care for. Life changes, and hairstyles have put my hair through a lot. Quarantine is helping me to learn better ways to care for and style it naturally.

Cleansing oils are one of the few products that the average person can make DIY for themselves fairly easily. All you have to do is buy Cromollient SCE (the solubilizer that will make it emulsify when you add water) and use it at 10-15% and use your favorite oil for the other 85-90% of this as well as 1% Vit E if you’d like to extend the shelf life a bit but that’s optional. Combine it in a sanitized bottle and give it a good shake. It’s anhydrous so you don’t need to worry about a preservative, heating and holding to kill microbes, or very precise measurement.

Oh Cassandra, we are all going on an emotional roller coaster thanks to the covid 'thing'. I'm loving your chats on skincare and I have put many of your recommendations into practice. Thank you for that. As with my skin care journey, I am now beginning a hair care journey. For years I have tried to embrace my type 2 curls without much success. I had a short pixie type cut which is now grown out along with the hair dyes. I'm learning all about my hair, what it does and does not like to do. No more 'heat' products for me either. Love you, appreciate your videos and keep up the great service you do for this community

I love that you were able to relate to her hair journey in some kind of way and that you spoke on how big of a need there is for skin products (specifically sunscreen) for darker skin. You have NO idea how unvalued we feel because we’re not even considered or we’re overlooked and just plain neglected in so many areas of life in the U.S.. TBH, this would be much more powerful of a reaction video if another black woman did it because the paaaain in the black woman’s hair journey is waaaaaay deeper than any white woman could convey...But I applaud the effort.
It’s really disappointing to hear that a white mother knew she was having a black child but didn’t educate herself to learn how to maintain her child’s hair needs. Now she is an adult and still struggling with knowing what to do. Made me really sad ):

oh no yes, but it doesn’t seem like she tried to learn anything herself. The way she said her mother would just drop her off at the salon makes it seem as though the mother felt her daughter’s hair was too complicated and left it up to other people to worry about. It’s great to have a black person teach you about your own hair, but that doesn’t mean the mother couldn’t have learned anything herself and been able to know how to help her daughter when in need. The way she cried because she felt alone with her hair made it seem like she didn’t have the mother support she needed with her hair. These are just my thoughts and assumptions though, not hate!

My waves are uneven and frizzy, my hair is growing out gray!! I can’t get my hair colored and I was heat styling my hair for over 5 years, bur it’s so dry and thinning. I’m also learning to work with my natural hair and it’s been a struggle. Now I don’t feel so alone.

It's not only Hollywood that doesn't embrace natural hair. I'm from Brazil and even though this is a very culturally mixed country, the only "acceptable" texture for curly hair are the very defined ones. So most people here use leave in products to make it more defined and "tamed", the industry of curly hair cosmetics is HUGE here now. I'm also bi-racial, my hair without the leave in is frizzy, has a lot of volume and only now at 29 I'm getting the courage to use it as it is. It's a long process but I think it will be worth it.
