Lovely job, some great ideas and pointers for my own project which I'm undertaking myself. Just struggling to get a structural engineer to provide the advice I need to commence !
Great vid. My builder is saying I have to put the beam underneath the joists, can all joists normally be cut and connected to some wood inside the beam via brackets like you've done normally?
Thank you. Its difficult to say without seeing it. If you want it sunk in the ceiling needles are required through the bedroom above , heating pipes need cutting and re connecting through the rsj, majority of builders install under the joists. Check out our latest video uploaded 5 days ago it shows the whole process
Great video and nice work, only draw back that i can see is, Should of done the concrete first on the foundation then put the second post in, but you would have to reduce the size of the second post! Thats the only problem! Smart documenting and making a video of the work 👍🏾
For your pipes to go through the RSJ, do you need structural engineers design for those or do you just screw in the middle two holes for the radiator pipes to go oin? Great videos by the way. We're DIYing our own based on your videos!
Good job , We generally have a beam With a 300x8 plate welded to the bottom with equal overhang on each side and cut a notch on bottom of existing floor joists and let them sit on the plate ,no need for the beam fill timbers or joist hangers as they can't be wrapped over the top and fixed where there's limited room
Thanks Brian, i have seen that bottom plate done by A & E construction like that, knocking joists on 1 side. Thats a very good idea using it on a job like this one. Great feedback
Thanks for getting back to me. Sorry to linger. I have a stud wall to remove and certain it’s structural. The house is a wooden brick clad building so I’m sure there are no internal block walls to support an RSJ. Is it possible to support an RSJ with timber or would it require steel uprights to carry the beam. Is it also possible to tie into an RSJ at right angles to form a T to avoid having to add a central support column below the joint? Hope that makes sense. Great video. Keep up the great work. Very informative 👍
Thanks mike , im glad the video lools fluent enough but i have a confession this took 1 days to remove the wall, and 1 day to install RSJ. The RSJ was fabricated the day we knocked the wall. 🙈
Thanks for taking the time to reply. If for various reason the steel can’t be placed in situ before you cut the joists would you use a laser to mark all the joists ?
Impressive work! But, how did you guys know the length of the posts? I saw they were already pre-welded with top-bottom plates. How did the steel manufacturer know the exact measures? Also, I-ve got the same job here in Bucks. Can you guys do it?
Hello mate, you have to knock the wall down first and expose the foundation, then measure from foundation to ceiling. Then minus the spaces, the plates, the top steel, give us a call we can get it sorted for you
Did this pass building regs? I’m having a problem where my construction engineer is saying I will see the notch for the rsj but I don’t want to see the notch so not sure what to do
If the rsj is deeper than the ceiling void, you could batten under the joists , platser board and skim. Effectively lowering the ceiling. Is this what you mean?
Hi , no we managed to bolt our base plate directly onto the existing foundation. We have had it where there is no foundation because of timber floor, we had to dig 1.2m3 pit and fill with concrete
Hi we drilled through the rsj with a mag drill 14mm, then we drilled through timber with a 14mm spade bit, then bolted together with m12 coach bolts, and square washers.
@@pauljamieconstruction1871 yes but your too far im from manchester my builder has done some absoulte cowboy job i shown him this vid and he said i know how to do it Where u jolted the two long timbers either side of the rsj He basically put one long timber ontop of the rsj and wrapped 20 joist hangers around it
Great job.
Thank you! Cheers!
Great vid - thanks for taking the time to post it.
Thank you , and no problem
A pleasure to watch that!

Great i am looking to do very similar.
How did this take.
Thanks
2 days brother
How do you work out the steel required. Who does that calculation when planning? Thanks for the video. I have a similar job coming up.
You have to get a structural engineer to work out a design. Thanks mate. Let me no how it goes

Great vid - Can I ask how you got your cuts so neat on the joists?
Thanks mate. I use a reciprocating saw so the blade is verticle.

@neilu.k.1364 yes laser or chalk line. Then use a boat level to plumb a line with a pencil on each joist

Awesome work and where is your footing?

Awesome
What happened with the pipes that appear to have originally crossed over the beam area?
Hi , we drill holes through the rsj if any services need to pass through. Which 9 times out of ten they do. I hope that helps
Hi what tool did you use to cut the joists straight?
Hi Sam , i used the Hilti reciprocating saw with a 225mm rigid wood blade. And kept the saw vertical. 👍🏼
@@pauljamieconstruction1871 Thanks mate, need to do that and all my blades I have that length always bend out at the end 👍🏻
@Sam Smith yea they do a firm one for wood only with large teeth. If you get a good brand like hilti, milwaukee, then it will go through like butter.
@@pauljamieconstruction1871 going to get one now, thanks a lot mate

Hi bob, we discussed this detail with our engineer first, building control are more than happy with this detail.
Hi, did you need to do a footing for the posts both sides?
Hi , no we managed to bolt our base plate directly onto the existing foundation. We have had it where there is no foundation because of timber floor, we had to dig 1.2m3 pit and fill with concrete
Nice work - How much did that cost the customer? Parts and labour?
Hi A Singh this project was competed about 9 months ago for 4k not including waste removal and Exclusive of the dreaded vat.
What screw did you use to screw joist to the timber in the rsj
Hi we drilled through the rsj with a mag drill 14mm, then we drilled through timber with a 14mm spade bit, then bolted together with m12 coach bolts, and square washers.
@@pauljamieconstruction1871 and them small screws joining the joists with the with the joist hangers were they normal 30 mm screws?

Out of interest how much did you charge to do this job including supplying the steels?
Hi Rich , this project was just under 4k excluding vat and excluding waste removal. This was completed around 9months ago. Are you doing 1?
