Howard the Duck (1986) was actually the FIRST Marvel comics movie... predating Iron Man (2008) and the MCU, obviously, Spider-Man (2002), X-Men (2000), Blade (1998), the Captain America movie where he had rubber ears (1990), and The Punisher (1989) with Dolph Lundgren... the only Marvel adaptations for the screen that were earlier are stuff for television like the Hulk TV series from the 1970s.
It's also underrated and hilarious if not taken seriously, and why would you take it seriously?

Peter’s ship The Milano is named after Alyssa Milano. Because she was pretty popular back in 1988.

I'd argue that she didn't really become a big name until the 90s... but... 1988 would have been 4 years in to the start of Who's the Boss? and Peter, like myself, probably had a crush on young Samantha Micelli.

Ronan the Accuser first appeared in Fantastic Four #65 in 1967, written by Stan Lee and pencilled by Jack Kirby (the GOAT). He is a Kree radical, and a High Accuser of the Kree empire. Ronan wields the "Universal Weapon", a hammer with the capability to deal out extreme devastation. Like all Kree, he is significantly stronger, faster and more durable than any human, but even for a Kree, he is extremely powerful and dangerous. His actions and ideals have often brought him into conflict with the Fantastic Four, the Avengers and more recently, the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Anyone who makes a movie that introduces a bunch of new characters all at once needs to see this film. This is the correct way to meet several different people and actually care about all of them. A lot of people cried over the death of a talking tree that they just met. (I may have teared up a bit myself) James Gunn is a terrific director. I am sure he will do amazing things over at DC as the new man in charge.

The Duck at the end is Howard The Duck. Another Marvel caricter. Howard The Duck was made into a movie back in the 80's.

  • @aaronbeatdown
    @aaronbeatdown Месяц назад +6

The end credits scene is a nod to two other Marvel characters. In the mid 80's there was actually a Howard the Duck film, and it is.... something. While he is a real character in the comics, I think his use here is just an homage to the film. The other character is Cosmo the Spacedog. Cosmo is inspired by Laika, the dog the Soviets sent up into space. First one to orbit the earth. Cosmo in the comics is a member of the Guardians.
When they announced this movie, I remember comic fans basically having the reaction of "Huh?" The Guardians were a niche group even in comics. While Iron Man and Cap and Thor weren't marquee names before these movies, they were part of the Avengers and so people knew them. I think I spent a good fifteen years of reading comics without even knowing who the Guardians were until I saw an issue on a shelf and picked it up and checked it out. While James Gunn is a fan, I also think they were chosen by him because they would allow him more creative liberties with them, and it paid off for Marvel.

This is the first movie where you're actually introduced to the concept of the Infinity Stones as an exposition. They are as follows:
Space - Blue - Containment vessel: the Tesseract; it grants its wielder the power to manipulate space, creating portals to other locations or altering the distance between locations despite the laws of physics. With the Power stone it can grant the user nigh omnipresence. The weapons created by HYDRA from it actually disintegrate the target by scattering their atoms across space.
Power - Purple - Containment vessel: the Orb; this grants it's holder superhuman strength and endurance and allows them to manipulate all forms of energy. It also enhances the effects of all the other Infinity stones. It is also the most volatile of the Stones, and will burn out any mortal that touches it directly. This is how Ronan was able to demolish the NovaCorps blockade with an energy blast from his hammer, and how the Guardians defeated him in turn, by spreading out its destructive capacity among them equally and creating an energy blast that incinerated him.
Reality - Red - Containment vessel: the Aether; allows the user to make their wishes into reality in a limited area, even if it contradicts established scientific laws, and do things that would normally be impossible. Combined with the other stones, it can allow the user to reshape reality on a Universal scale. Malekith wanted this so he could once again darken the Nine Realms, but with just the Aether, it's power was limited to that area and not the entire Universe.
Mind - Yellow - Containment vessel: the Scepter; this gem allows it's holder to enhance their psychic/psionic potential, able to access the thoughts and dreams of other beings. With the Power stone, it can access all minds in the Universe simultaneously. It is also the physical representation of the universal subconscious. This is how Loki was able to turn Hawkeye and Dr. Selvig in the Avengers with the Scepter.
Time - Green - Containment vessel: the Eye of Agamotto; one can use this to not only view the past and future, but to travel into them, as well as to speed up, slow down, or stop time. With the Power stone one can become near omniscient with access to the knowledge of all time at once.
Soul - Orange - Containment vessel: unknown; lost to the universe at large. In the comics, its powers allow one to steal, control, manipulate, and alter living and dead souls, as well as animating the dead. It also contains within it a pocket dimension known as Soulworld, a final resting place for lost souls. With the Power stone, it allows one to control all life in the Universe.
The containment vessels are there to allow mortals to handle them with varying degrees of protection; as you saw, Red Skull was banished by the Tesseract for misusing its power, and then it burned a hole through every layer of his plane, and it burned Nick Fury when he grabbed it in the Avengers. Asgardians are more durable so the Scepter and Aether chamber didn't really affect them.

Groot's species, the Groot, are able to speak normally when they're very young, but as they age their vocal cords harden and thus the only things they can then say are "I am Groot". If one spends enough time with them though, they start to discern the different inflections and tones they use when saying this and thus begin to understand what they're actually saying, which is why Rocket in this can translate for him.
Nebula and Gamora are the _adopted_ daughters of Thanos. He has a penchant for taking in young, yet powerful beings and adopting them. The Children of Thanos, aka the Black Order, are a group of powerful villains that he has taken in over the years, of which Nebula and Gamora are members. They have a complicated relationship with their 'father' though, as you can see, and Nebula is envious of the affection Thanos shows for Gamora.
Drax the Destroyer is played by Dave Bautista, legendary wrestler for the WWE, who plays this role perfectly. If it weren't for the hours of makeup he'd likely reprise the role after Guardians 3.
Xandar is home to the NovaCorps, an intergalactic police force. Garthan Saal, a Denarian in the Corps (he's the one leading the blockade, Denarian Saal), eventually becomes the hero Supernova in the comics, receiving all of the NovaCorps' cosmic power after the destruction of Xandar.
The Kree are a warlike race of super-strong humanoids with two distinct species, the blue ones like Ronan, and ones that look like regular humans. There will be much more to come with the Kree and their shenanigans later.

I was surprised by how I much I liked this movie. To the point it's in my top 5 or maybe even top 3. Because this is a whole new team of people and I don't usually like changes or new faces most of the time in franchises. But as a standalone movie this was something different and basically just a space adventure with good humor. All the characters are also very likeable. Rocket and Groot ftw.
Like others have said you could do a ranking once you've seen "Avengers: Endgame" as that is a natural end to phase 1-3. I mean, MCU is still going and who knows where and when it will end...
As for myself... I find it really hard to rank these movies as I like them for different reasons, same as I love the characters for different reasons... there's just soooo many to like! I kind of view the Avengers movies as one entity tbh. I loved the first one and each one of them have something I love but of course it all leads to Endgame... which I obviously won't talk about now. But for sure, as I've already said, as stand alone movies goes... Captain America's movies are still in my top 3. His I found the most interesting, action packed and suspenseful as well as funny and heartbreaking/sad at the same time. Would love to hear your thoughts on the movies once you've taken the journey to Endgame. In a ranking if you can. :)

Here are some interesting facts about the guardians of the Galaxy. If you haven't noticed implanted in Peter Quill's neck is a universal translator. While Groot language is forgotten you can communicate with him through overtime exposure with him telepathically. Groot die the seedling is his son. Rocket is smarter than Tony Stark with technology that rivals his as well. Now keep in mind some of the characters are stronger or weaker based off of the comic book to live action versions. Gamora is 5 to 6 times stronger than Captain America who wrote self gets stronger with every appearance and who strength level is around 9 tons at this time in the MCU. Drax the destroyer is 10 times stronger than Captain America and the reason he seemed weak compared to Ronan is running is equal to Thor's strength. Ronan with the power Stone his strength is equal to the Hulk and power that rival Thor destructive capabilities.

They had no idea if this one would stick around. New director for the MCU. New team. Like the Avengers in space. But it has a different feel with the music, the comedy, the setting. The director pulled it off and then some. And unlike many of the MCU movies, I like second one in the series. And the third one! Get out the tissues. And to think Disney/Marvel almost didn't let the director make that one. And then lost him to the WB/DC group.

Nice reaction - after Gunn's achievement in jump-starting a whole creative universe w the Guardians, the MCU made him a central showrunner, till a revived scandal led Disney to fire him, and he's now running DC - the voices of Groot and Rocket are Hollywood superstars Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper, and Oscar-winner Benicio del Toro is the Collector - Thanos is the villain who appears at the end of Avengers - these Infinity Stones will tie the first 22-odd MCU films together into the "Infinity Saga"
    - I like Lee Pace as Ronan a lot - he was criticized for being "dull" - but I don't think ppl understood Gunn's strategy - Ronan is like Malvolio from Shakespeare's beloved comedy Twelfth Night - all the other characters are like a bunch of colorfully unruly classroom children, and Malvolio is the sour adult "authority figure" in the room who's not in on the joke, and who also ties the others together by contrast - that's why Lee Pace's Ronan is so intentionally full of himself w scary gravitas, and hilariously mortified when our gang aren't as pious as he is, and he also helps bring the film to different emotional levels
    - X-Men also used Shakespeare as a template for a magical ensemble, in their case Tempest, w Professor X as Prospero, Storm as his Ariel, and Wolverine as Caliban - and both films are expressively beautiful w their visual spectacle, and surprisingly varied and intricate w their range of emotional dynamics
    - the Guardians had been obscure Marvel characters, but Gunn made them hugely popular and central to the MCU w this one film (and also built on that magic w parts 2 and 3) - and he also chose another team of outcasts for DC when he did Suicide Squad 2 - now he's been put in charge of rebooting DCU totally, w DC hoping he'll work his same magic on them; he's got a whole series of DC projects in the works, w a lot of similarly obscure characters, and he's starting out w a brand new Superman that everyone's waiting for now
    - in between MCU and DCU, Gunn and his family produced a small film called Brightburn, which I think is processing his hurt and anger at being cast out during the short-lived scandal, based on a few unruly tweets he'd posted long ago, during his early years making films w the famously raucous low budget studio Troma, whose creative bad taste is almost certainly why MCU hired him in the first place for Guardians
    - in any case, IMO his Brightburn is astonishing, one of the best of the decade, and one of the most horrifying films I've ever seen

There isn't a weak MCU movie from here to Infinity War and Age of Ultron is a barn burner... lots of new characters and a couple really minor plot points laid that won't pay off for several movies

It’s important to keep track of the infinite stones. You’ve seen 4 of the 6 so far.
The Space Stone/the Tesseract-first found on Asgard, Odin entrusted it to a church of Odin worshippers in Tönsberg, Norway. They kept it safe until the 1940s when Hydra led by Red Skull invaded and took it to use to make weapons. When Captain America defeated them and crashed his plane in the Arctic, the Stone opened a portal and sent Red Skull to an unknown location. While searching for Steve Rogers, Howard Stark found the Tesseract and had it in his possession as he and Agent Carter founded SHIELD. (Captain America First Avenger) It remained in shields possession until Nick Fury asked Erik Selvig to see if he could use it to make weapons for him. (Thor) Loki took control of Erik’s mind and made him use it to open a portal to let Thano’s army through to conquer Earth. But when he was defeated by the Avengers, Fury agreed to let Thor take it back to Odin’s Vault on Asgard, where it currently remains (The Avengers)
The Mind Stone/Loki’s Scepter. This was actually in Thano’s possession first and he loaned it to Loki to use to conquer Earth in exchange Loki would return the Mind Stone as well and give Thanos the Space Stone. However Loki was defeated and the Scepter was entrusted to SHEILD (the Avengers) Later it was discovered a secret cabal of Hydra had infiltrated SHEILD and currently have possession of it, using it’s power to experiment on some twin volunteers. (Captain America Winter Soldier)
The Reality Stone/The Æther. First found by Malokieth, King of the Dark Elves, who sought to use it in conjunction with the Convergence to conquer the Nine Realms. He was defeated by Odin’s father King Bor, who ordered it to be hidden where no one would find it. Malokeith pit his people into hibernation until the eve of the next Convergence, with hopes to try again. As the next Convergence approached, weird events happened on Earth that drew Jane Foster to a Dark Realm cavern where she found the Æether and it absorbed into her body. Thor brought her to Asgard in hopes his mother could remove it. Long story short, Thor defeated Malokeith and had his friends take the Æether to the Collector to keep it a safe distance from the Tessaract, and there it remains in his collection, despite the explosion in Guardians of the Galaxy (Thor: The Dark World)
The Power Stone/The Orb. First found on the planet Morag, it was acquired by Star Lord who was hired by The Broker, who turned down the deal when he found out Ronan was interested in it. It was then almost stolen by Gamora, who intended to double cross Ronan and Thanos and sell it to the Collector for 4 billion units. With the help her new friends, they do get it to the Collector, but a servant of his trigger explosion when she attempts to use it to kill her master. It then falls into Ronan’s hands who chooses to double cross Thanos and conquer the Xandarians on his own. The Guardians defeat him, and entrust the Power Stone to the Xandarian government, where it currently remains.

Great recap of the Stones. I had missed one, or rather I had counted the Tesseract and Loki’s Sceptor as one instead of two.

Lighthearted. And then James Gunn (writer and director) rips our guts out first thing. James Gunn is the best.
Ideals: Guardians, they must protect the realms.
Reality: Nah. They are a bunch of screwups.
But they still save the day.
    This movie is a blast.
How do Guardians characters realign favorites in MCU so far?

You aren't watching these movies in the proper order. Or at least, it doesn't appear that you are watching them in proper order. Look up the correct order and watch them.
