    You made a really good point early on: “this is not predictable at all!” The whole movie defies a lot of superhero movie tropes but improves on them in a lot of cases.

    1:15 The fact that the intro takes place in 1974 is paying homage to the "Shazam!" series that went on for three seasons starting in 1974.

    I was a big fan of Zachary Levi from the tv show Chuck, so I saw this in the theater. Interesting fact: John Glover plays Dr. Sivana's dad in this movie, and he played Lex Luthor's dad for several years in Smallville.

      John Glover is wonderful. In a movie called "Love Valor Compassion" he played twin brothers and really showed his range.

    While this was a poor adaptation of the OG Captain Marvel (the character was rebooted and renamed Shazam in 2011) this movie was an underapproeciated gem. Hilarious and heartfelt, with a strong message about family.

    Not sure if you are aware, but this Shazam film was part of what was supposed to be the DCEU (DC Extended Universe), DC's attempt to do what Marvel had already successfully done with the MCU. There are a number of films that are part of this universe. In order of release:
    1) Man of Steel - the first film in the connected continuity retroactively added to the DCEU.
    2) Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice (you must watch the Extended Edition).
    3) Suicide Squad
    4) Wonder Woman (Teased at the end of Batman V. Superman)
    5) Justice League (must see the extended Snyder Cut, also called Zach Snyder's Justice League, which is roughly 4 hours in length).
    6) Aquaman
    7) Shazam! (The film you reacted to here).
    8) Birds of Prey (DC's first R-rated superhero flick).
    7) Wonder Woman 1984
    8) The Suicide Squad (sequel/reboot of the Suicide Squad franchise, much superior to the first film!)
    8a) Peacemaker - Streaming TV series spin-off of The Suicide Squad following one of the film's anti-heroes. Great show!
    9) Black Adam (Shazam spin-off).
    10) The Flash
    11) Blue Beetle
    12) Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom
    The DCEU was discontinued during production of the last three films and James Gunn - most famous for the three Guardians of the Galaxy MCU films - was hired to run the new DC film reboot series which will come under the umbrella of the DCU. You will also note the Batman, Superman, Dark Knight Trilogy, Joker films, and The Batman are not part of the continuity of either the DCEU or DCU and exist as their own alternate realities.

    It's crazy to think there was a point in history where Shazam was more popular, more famous, than Superman. Then DC sued for copyright infringement because he was "Too Similar" to Superman.

    So this was part of DC's attempt at an MCU-like shared Universe called the DC Extended Universe (or DCEU). So you guys might want start from the beginning there as well:
    Man of Steel (2013)
    Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) (Specifically watch the Ultimate Edition)
    Suicide Squad (2016)
    Wonder Woman (2017)
    Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021) (this came out a few years after the theatrical release (2017), and is a 4 hour cut of the movie and it's light years better and the definitive way to watch JL).
    Aquaman (2018)
    Shazam (2019)
    Birds of Prey: The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (2020)
    Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
    The Suicide Squad (2021)
    Black Adam (2022)
    Shazam: Fury of the Gods (2023)
    The Flash (2023)
    Blue Beetle (2023)
    Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023)
    James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy 1, 2 and 3), has now taken over DC and he's restarted everything with his own vision of a DC shared Universe with a new Superman movie coming next year, so you at least know this all has an end point

    • @tktopmovies

      Oh wow, restarting everything?! So cool to hear!! We have seen a handful of DC comic movies, I've seen Man of Steel (Ty hasn't!), Wonder Woman, and Aquaman! And then of course the many Bat Man movies and Joker movies!

    So the funny thing about Captain Marvel...
    Captain Marvel was created by Fawcett publications. First appearance Whiz Comics #2 1940. Debuting not long after Action Comics #1 featuring the adventures of Superman from rival DC comics. DC took fawcett publications to court in 1953 over having a hero that was derivative of Superman. Because he wore a cape, flew and was super strong.
    They actually won the lawsuit and Fawcett ceased publication of the book at which point DC acquired the rights to Captain Marvel themselves in 1973.
    Meanwhile Marvel Comics the new up and comer wanted to create Captain Marvel but was stymied by DC for copyright. So Marvel had to refer to their hero in his own book as Mar-Vell a Kree warrior. Marvel knew the copyright would lapse at some point and had lawyers waiting in the wings.
    When the copyright expired Marvel got the rights and now it was DC that had to change the name of their hero. Shazam was the magic word that transformed young orphan Billy Batson into the hero known as Captain Marvel.
    Shazam is actually an acronym for the initials of the beings who lent their power to the Council of Immortals. S for the wisdom of Solomon, H for the strength of Hercules, A for the stamina of Atlas, Z for the power of Zeus, A for the courage of Achilles and M for the speed of Mercury (Hermes).

    • @neospock5034
      @neospock5034 Месяц назад +1

      Good summary, although there was an almost 20-year gap between Fawcett ceasing publication of Captain Marvel comics, and DC acquiring the defunct comic book chraracter. Marvel introduced their own Captain Marvel (Mar-Vell the Kree warrior) during that gap when the trademark had expired and nothing was being published.

    • @johnniequinn3215
      @johnniequinn3215 Месяц назад +1

      And Superman originally could not "fly". He could leap long distances, but Fawcett one upped DC in having a flying hero.

      It's always crazy seeing an opinion like this, that is so completely the opposite of what almost every person on earth agrees to be true. But I also have a Hill I will die on, Thor the Dark World is not as bad as everyone in the world says it is.

    • @neospock5034
      @neospock5034 Месяц назад

      @@spencernaugle I agree on that. Thor the Dark World was solid, it gave audiences a better look at Asgard and really got the Infinity saga started.
      A big issue was a weak villain portrayal- Malekith came across as uninspired and dull. But the biggest problem was timing- it came out shortly after The Avengers but right before Captain America The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy. So it (and Iron Man 3) felt disappointing, sandwiched between such greatness.
