    There's a nifty trick where you let the sequence play one time through, and as it's playing you place the record trig so that way the 2nd time around is what's actually recorded. The purpose of this is to allow the trails from the previous playthrough to trail into the recording so that it doesn't have an abrupt start every time. Another option is to record your sound totally dry (no reverb or delay) and apply spacial effects on the octatrack itself so the trails are controlled.

    this video helped me so much! i couldn't figure out recording with trigs until i saw you leave the record screen up and remove the record trig as it started playing

    I love this! This is what I call an “organic” demonstration. I can totally relate to him and learn quite fast as he is mirroring my thought processes when I am faced with the Octatrack in front of me.

    It actually really helps to see mistakes and how to recover. I REALLY enjoy your vids, approach and music. Long play vids from Cuckoo are fantastic, but yours are super specific to do exactly what I want to see. Thanks so much!

    I agree with the others that not editing out the mistakes was a great addition...Helps me realize we're all human and it also helps me learn from your mistakes, too. The end result is great

    really appreciate these videos. seeing a very similar workflow on some things and then noticing a different step that works better or a function i had forgotten to use for a while, like messing the retrigger parameters. great stuff. thanks!

    Andre, sounds beautiful. I love how your'e using the Octatrack in this tutorial. I myself am looking to using it to create more ambient type tracks/songs. You've totally inspired me to take the leap and buy the Octotrack and get on it!.

    Your OT sets are killer. I'm curious when you're actually producing in the studio, how do you get your stems into the DAW? Or does your ot workflow take care of most of your mixing ahead of time?

    • @nthirteen
      @nthirteen  Год назад

      I never exported stems from the ot to ableton, but if you save your sampled content to the cf card you could use these perfectly fine in ableton.

  • @Bluntisgood
    @Bluntisgood 6 лет назад +5

    Thx for the video. You make "simple and accessible" things with your OT. It's different than the pros who make 15 operations in 2 seconds and it's fresh :)
    Generally i like other videos but i don't understand the half of what are they doing ;p

    • @nthirteen

      Its ok to not understand what somebody else is doing. Sometimes they do not either. Just keep on turning the knobs.

    Hallo André!
    Vielen Dank für Deine informativen Octatrack Videos! 👍
    Ich würde Dich gerne um Rat fragen...
    Ich bin immer wieder drauf und dran mir einen Octatrack zu kaufen und tue es dann doch nicht.
    Ich interessiere mich für Ambient und Berlin School Music...
    Einige sagen, der OT ist wahrscheinlich die ideale Maschine für Ambient Sachen auch wenn es leider nur sehr wenige Beispiele auf RUclips gibt, das meiste ist doch leider sehr EDM orientiert.
    Was mich vom Kauf immer wieder abhält ist die Befürchtung das die Kiste eine zu steile Lernkurve erfordert. Ich denke das der OT komplex aber auch sehr kompliziert zu bedienen ist nach allem was ich höre und sehe. Ein intuitives Benutzen scheint erst nach Monaten oder Jahren intensiven Lernens mit der Maschine möglich zu sein. Das schreckt mich ziemlich ab... 😎
    Ich möchte Dich fragen:
    Würdest Du den Octatrack einen Einsteiger auch für Ambient Musik empfehlen oder eher eine “einfachere” Sampler Alternative wie z.B. die 1010 Blackbox? Ich nutze bisher nur Synthesizer...
    Wie lange hast Du gebraucht um mit dem OT warm zu werden so das Du entspannt und intuitiv mit ihm Musik machen zu kommen konntest?
    Vielleicht helfen Deine Antworten das für und wieder bezüglich eines Kaufs noch besser abzuwägen.
    Du würdest mir mit einem Feedback sehr helfen. Vielen Dank!
    Beste Grüße aus Berlin Kreuzberg! 😊

      Schwer zu sagen, kommt darauf an, was du damit machen möchtest. Der Octatrack hat viele Stärken aber auch Schwächen. Am meisten stört mich das limitierte 64 Steps Paradigma der Elektrons und die überschaubaren Effekte. Wie jedes Instrument brauchst du etwas Zeit, den OT zu lernen, aber das ist wirklich nur Übungssache. Wenn du Angst hast, probiere doch lieber den Digitakt. Der ist etwas einfacher, glaube ich. Die Ultimative Ambient Maschine gibt es, glaub ich, nicht und das ist ja auch gut so. Viel Erfolg. Grüße aus Erfurt. Andre.

      Vielen Dank! 🙏
      Einen Digitakt habe ich schon. Dachte den OT auch als eine Art Looper zu nutzen. Längere Sessions mitschneiden, Teile davon wieder verwenden , neu arrangieren usw.
      Digitakt hat leider nur eine begrenzte Sample länge, kann kein Time stretch und Pitch shifting. Ein OT scheint das alles zu können.
      Wie gesagt, ich bin hin und her gerissen was den OT angeht...

      Verstehe. Glaube dafür ist eher Ableton live zu empfehlen.

    Nice video. I guess you could expand on that technique with resampling and overdubbing using different synths playing the same (or slightly altered) pattern.Btw. Preroll is available for audio tracks as well. :)Cheers

    • @nthirteen
      @nthirteen  6 лет назад

      Thanks. Preroll, when using recording trigs? On audio tracks I tend to play the phrase through at least once or twice to get it perfect looped in including trails, notes etc. But yeah, it depends on the sample.

    • @StillJustACat
      @StillJustACat 6 лет назад +1

      I thought you said Preroll was only available on Midi Tracks?
      Actually I just wanted to point out that Preroll can also be used on sample trigs, but your reply just made me check if it's possible to have Preroll and use Recording Trigs - It works!
      As long as you use Live Recording Mode (hold record and press play) to start the pattern - it works :)

    Can you do a video please of how to midi secuence the OP-1 using the Octatrack?

    • @nthirteen

      Hi Pablo. You just need a MIDI host to connect both. Made a video that might help ruclips.net/video/EHryWjrsYeM/видео.html

    I like to take samples on my Octatrack and tweak them and can do whole sets that way with the arranger and scenes.

  • @solomonjenkins9505
    @solomonjenkins9505 6 лет назад +1

    so midi is going in from your midi keyboard and the octatrack is recording that midi data and sequencing the nord with it? How do I do this please explain

    • @solomonjenkins9505
      @solomonjenkins9505 6 лет назад

      or was the piano sound already in the octatrack?

    • @nthirteen
      @nthirteen  6 лет назад +3

      Connect the nord and the ot in both directions via midi. Use the midi mode on the ot. On track 1 of the ot set channel 1. Now set the piano on the nord to channel 1 as well. Hit record on the ot and play the nord. Now the ot should record the notes you played and play them back correspondingly. That "midi playback" is what I later on sampled and mangled. Hope that makes sense. Maybe I should do another tutorial about just that.

    Does this excel over something like the MPC Live for this kind of style?

      I don’t know. Sorry. I think the mpc live is a very capable machine, so I think yes. This should be possible.

      @@nthirteen "This is us" is from American TV. Its a hugely successful show. The audio touches your heart, it plays to the emotional events on screen. I guess I am saying your audio is touching and feels like the sound is from "this is us". The Octatrack did not create that, that come from you, the machine facilitated your understanding of orchestration. It's hella good tho right? :P

    Interesting. Sir, you really need to start playing with a click track as your timing is poor to say the least.
    I just ordered this machine to-day and looking forward to getting me hands dirty. Keep on Rockin’ in the Free Worldwide.

      Add a click track and make it all quantised, remove the human touch? No thanks. Sounds beautiful with a groove all to itself.
