- This is a technique i've been using for awhile, it really helps when performing while improvising. Grab something you like, repeat it while you figure out something else that works well too.

Don’t forget to have record quick mode on for this to work. Project > system > personalize > record quick mode
Whoa! is this an MK2 thing? Or did i never come across it on my MK1 haha. Thanks for that info, i love using this option!
I was scratching my head on why hitting rec3 was doing nothing. Thank you!
Damn… doubting myself for 2 hours
Thank you SOOOOOOO MUCH FOR THIS COMMENT. Jesus, was going nuts there for moment!!
Bless you! You wonderful human!
“You already read the title, let’s not waste any time..”. 👍👍 for this alone 😎
then he plays an intro bumper! ;)
I'm such a dummy, I thought the REC1, REC2, and REC3 were separate sampling methods and not an ordered process you needed all three for 😭don't ask me how long I've had an Octatrack for...Now I actually know how to live loop, thank God for Ricky Tinez!!
That under one second switch from “super simple” to “I really hope that makes sense” has me in splits 😂
Your statement “Track 6 which is scene B for 13” sums up the Octatrack experience in a nutshell. Nice work as always.
This is exactly how I use mine .... It just took me a long time to understand how to get there ! Great to have a tutorial focused on just this aspect.
Great tips and tutorial!
Quick reference for those using the Octatrack MKI: You arm the recorder for internal "input" by pressing the track key + MIDI key. So in this case T6 + MIDI.
Why mine is recording over and over again in a loop, not just once?
@@fizmo303 did you get an answer ?
@@fizmo303 check your RLEN make sure it’s set to the number of steps in your loop. Also check that you have Loop: off in your recording setup 1. This took me about an hour of rewinding the vid to figure out too😂
incredible usage scenario. thank *YOU* the elektron sequencer is causing a paradigm shift in my brain. it all started after my first experience with an elektron - the model cycles.
For me literally the tutorial I gained the most fun out of in a very long time. Thanks for all the time you put into your channel. Very much appreciated.
I’ve owned an Octatrack for about a month now and I actually understood most of what you were doing...as always a great explanation and video with inspirational choons too!
Excellent post! I've had my Octatrack for about 2 months and have got the foundations for sampling, Parts, Patterns and Scenes down. I wasn't sure how to create a smooth transition and this helped immensely! Thanks for spreading the knowledge!
I've been using this technique for a long time, and this is clearest explanation of it I have seen. Very good video.
Dude thank you for this!. out of the dozens of videos I've watched "teaching" the live loop setup, yours is the only one to include all necessary steps. when i follow the other vids, my loops end up overdubbing at every new cycle pass. cheers! Im rocking this new OT real hard all of the sudden!
Seeing practical applications like this in action is SO useful. The routing is super easy to understand.
More Octatrack.
Cause I still don't know how to use mine...
We need Octatrack October is what we need.
Looking forward to the new version of octaedit out soon...
Lmfao 😭
Any tutorials would be great on the octatrack mk2 - your videos are so clear and enjoyable!
@@robertsyrett1992 I need to do a series of tutorials. Love mine and took a year of reading the manual and trying to learn it. Still learning. So powerful. Ultimate sampler/sequencer.
I get it. A super helpful way to dj between modular sequences just like mixing two songs like the good old days by cueing something before the crowd hears it. I always believed that Eurorack needs some better way to cue things like the way you're doing it. I'm experimenting with something like you're doing with a make noise Rosie and a synthwerks sp-1p crossfading module and stackable cables. Very fun indeed but I think I need to implement the sampling capabilities of the Octatrack in my set up somehow. Thanks for the video.
Ive had the Octatrack for well over a year and its amazing still learning what all it can do. Terrific video and well explained. Great job man!
Yo at 10:20 you're like "if you set the scene volume to min you can't hear the fx on the scene" which is true - unless you have the scene volume at min but the scene amp vol up - which effectively creates three regimes of sound with an additional one in the middle of the crossfader (Scene A: no fx, Middle: partial FX and same volume, Scene B: no volume). This is because of the linear amp vol being summed with the non-linear crossfade volume
The end of that jam got so wild! bloody loved it
I am looking forward to everyone of your Octatrack videos!
I‘ve been thinking about buying an mk1 for the last months....
stop thinking, get one :) I was in that boat, then I just had to. No looking back now!
i own a mk 1 for ages. its the first hardware i bought new, the first unit i wanted to throw out of the window too.... hahaha. you wont regret if you have enough skin and fat for the bumps of learning. they make it unique since the posabillities are so broad!
tva tva this motivates me even more to buy it but I already knew I will have me moments of frustration with it haha
It will be my first piece of hardware besides my electric piano and guitar.. thanks for your answer, was it a good decision to buy the Octatrack as the first hardware?
@@malteschulz6851, I've been watching a lot of vids on it before I took the plunge and bought it. I'm quite a technically minded person so watched many vids before I discovered the scope of what it can do. That way, when it arrived, I was already slightly familiar with it. I had a plan of what I wanted to do with a piece of kit and figured it could be done on this beast (rather than sticking to Ableton), now the doors are open and I'm more inspired everyday. Plus, having a piece of hardware is making me do things I'd never do on a computer. Fantastic!
Dilbotronic ok i never really hear about someone regretting buying the Octatrack so I might safe like 2 months more and get one :)
Thanks for your answer, it motivates me! I would like to use some kind of midi mixer for the 8 tracks with some encoders so I can control the levels of the tracks, that should be possible with a normal midi mixer right?
awesome setup tip! got mine couple weeks ago, these kinda tricks are really helping to demystify the octatrack approach
Man, that jam in the end was sick!!!! I´m waiting for my octatrack to arrive and will come back to this video probably a 100 times until I´m able to pull off something like that!!
agreed
Damn, that *was* a lot of fun - gettin' a little Dataline there at the end! Thanks for the knowledge.
Hey Ricky, this vid is seriously awesome. Very useful. Could you please make a few more like this? For Octatrack learners like me this helps massively.
If you are lost at 4:13 because the "+" actually does not appear and the recording doesn't not start, it's because @Ricky uses a shortcut that you have to enable in Project menu > System menu > Personalize menu > Record Quick Mode: TRUE.
Also, If QREC is OFF, go to AED to start recording by pressing REC3 (but that's not always required, couldn't understand why, sometimes it works outside of AED too, sometimes not)
🤣loved your response to the jam at the end
There's so much you can do with an octatrack, your videos on it are great, I've still got so much learn!
I've been making drone jams for the last month and have an OT arriving soon. This is exactly the method I have been looking for. Thanks a lot!
Your enthusiasm sells everything you show. Thanks for the great videos :)
One of the best jams I have ever seen tbh
I purchased an OT Mk II in April of this year. I turned it on, verified that it was working, and put it back in the box. It knows I'm here. Some instruments I give names to, but this one is an 'It.' I'm afraid of It, and It knows this. Your videos are very helpful, however. I might just hold onto It.
Lmfao 😂...it only does what you tell it to do...unless you give it free will...which you can totally do...then it will do whatever tf it wants...godspeed sir...
@@shatteredsquare Thanks. I might need it.
I feel this. I've had mine for almost a year, and my understanding of it comes in bursts. Every time I think i'm going to get rid of it, I have a new breakthrough.
I have started to lose count of the number of times I have come back to this video just for the jam the end. What an awesome jam Ricky!
2 mins in, and this is already the video of my OT dreams! Thanks Ricky!
that's some powerful gear
boy is it complicated
Man goes off at the end there damn bro
Holy shit that jam was soooo good! You experience with the octatrack really shows, it is a blast to watch!
Seems super helpful for live modular performance, to not get a loud unexpected pitch over the main speaker’s
That jam at the end is the best one I’ve seen you do. So great
Love the tips as well, really really useful
Thanks for the explanaition.. and that final permorfance, kick asses!
The end of this jam had me hitting the thizz so damn hard, holy shit. What a jam.
the teacher! been looking for a video like this in a looong time, appreciate it man, and my ears definitely appreciate that jam✌🏼
Great stuff! Just got a Mk1 and this gave me some much needed direction.
Badass man. I have been considering an Octatrack but haven't wanted to dive into a mega tutorial just to decide if I need one. Learned alot just now. Thanks! Now I want one... Sigh.
Ha, do'h. This solves my levels problem w/ transitions... I've been recording from the ins instead of the thru track. 🤦🏻♂️ Thank you!
Still keep coming back to this video just to listen to the jam with the beyonce sample at the end!! Love it!
its completely volapyk - i litterally didnt get even a gist of what you said - i mean , i can hear youre words - but they dont registre as meaningful sentences - im WAY in over my head here ... and i got a Tone AND a Takt , waiting for me to ....prod...at them...prefferble with a stick....in front of me ...at my desk....god have mercy on my soul........
Damn! This was fun. Best tutorial of the OT. I am gassing very hard now! Love it man!
That’s some pretty hardcore techno sounds in that jam 🧬
Hardcore techno is something else, but it was awesome acidy - what eurorack filter was that by the way?
Bought one of your T-shirts, absolutely love it! Thanks!
Damn! That last bit was dope as hell! Happy accidents!
That is a nasty little jam at the end there. Truly inspiring. Still getting to grips with my Octatrack after some years but this gives me the motivation to keep going! Nice work.
Another wicked jam sesh Ricky! Thanks!
Are you going to do a vid explaining the new intellijel box? :D
I‘m glad, that I have an Octateack, but I think you sold me on this WMD filter, it sounds gorgeous
Such a fantastic and well explainded video. I was always containing myself to send my gear directly to the OT as I have a mixer for that but I think that sending few of them can definitely bring more creativity in the workflow. Thanks man !
Gets really good from about 15mins, good work, really enjoyed this jam.
It just gets better and better as it goes on, love how filthy it gets.
WET RESONANCE ... yes mate!
you make me want an octatrack so baaad
Ok... That! Was fkkkkkin impressive.. I just received my octatrack a day ago and it feels SOO forboding. This video really made me feel inspired to delve deep. I already own an analog 4, and it took me a good couple months to feel confident with it, but i have a sneaky suspicion I'll be finding new ways to use the 8T in like... A year! You seem like you really have the hang of this beast. I would love to see a video where you utilize it more for song production, rather than live performance. (I fully realize that the OT is best suited for performance, but i think I'm going to use it to get crazy in my songs)
Great timing man, just bought the octatrack this week, with live looping and mangling at the top of my list. This is very useful, cheers!!!
Niiice, looking forward to more Octatrack action (and worklow explanations as well)
Great tutorial. New to the Octatrack and was wondering how to do this. Thanks!
Super helpful thanks for laying down the knowledge Ricky!
that's been very helpful - an excellent reminder of the OT's capabilities! cheers mate ☮️
that was a wicked jam at the end there ricky....too dope!
your voice is reallly chilll. your explination dito! i like your help ricky Tinez!! ( i own a mk1 tho) but it still helped me!
thaank you very much!!!
This one is it. This made me going to buy an OT, this is the workflow I want. Going to sell a bunch of unused gear, and the DT and get an OT. This seems so much fun!
I had the same response. this brought it home!
One of the reasons OT has been such a chore to learn is the fact that there are tons of different controls for the volume of any given audio source multiplied by 16 scenes that can adjust and control all of them. So at first I’d go to play or record something but couldn’t hear it and get very confused and frustrated as to why. There is so so so much freedom at the price of complexity.
🖤 your videos, greetings from Puerto Rico!
Interesting video, helping me get one step closer to getting that octatrack
On the mk1, the internal light is near the midi/part button if I’m not mistaken - at least that is the light I used to see if the audio is clipping.
7:35...just like a DJ, but instead of digging for a new CD you just noodle with your instrument to make the next section, tune it, then fade it in...
gonna have to watch this one a few times. Probably need to read the octa manual 10 more times.
Merlin’s Manual.. that’s the one
This is what I was searching for. Great tutorial!
Men! You are really killing both machines. Awesome video
He'll yea this started to blast off. Nice vid
Fair play. Great tutorial and great jam at the end!
Nicest tutorial on the web :-)
thank you for that workflow ! great ot mk2 vid!
Wicked! Loved the end beside of your great tutorial! Peace bro
A simple "thank you" is better than a long message.... Please make a live stream session!!! Peace :)
many times in your videos when you start jamin and i hear some real stuff, after 3 seconds you say "oh it's tooo much" and stop. i say "damn NO i want hear it!", but in this video im happy)
Cool performance
Octatrack tut series. I’m stuck between getting this or a digitak
Danke für die guten Tipps 🙏
The OT MkII looks so cool
Dude!!! The last performance awesome! The best! And thnks you for this video.... because that's exactly my future plan! Live gigs with My Octatrack, beat step and my Modular! So is das correcty.... I can cue my stuff on the headphones and mudlate my stuff bevor I go back from my recorded loop
to the main sound of my modul master sound?
Greetings from Germany
That's exactly how it can be done
Are you using the Beatstep to control OT? If so, how you finding it? You can use it without a midi host right? How does it deal (or not deal) with data jumps when changing patterns?
so awesome man!! Jam at the end.... so good. Keep sharing!
so intimidating. i can see trying to approach it as a sampler of yester year would be a mistake.
Ricky, do you have a video using the Octatrack and actually showing your gain staging "volumes/gain" when using the Octatrack with say Circuit and Digitakt and a synth......I see confusion on what do with levels of all the devices in establishing levels but maintain a good headphone signal and have good signal going out with audio from those things coming in.
Awesome been looking for a way to sample and play modular gear with my Octatrack. Since I have the OT and A4, saves me money on modular to get just a VCO, VCF, EG and utilities. I sample my Make Noise 0-coast into my Octatrack and love it. Plus can use the sample drums and just play with few cheap modules.
Damn you did it ...last minute wicked
Your videos are great! Entertaining and informative! Love it
Dope jam in the end man!
Dude that was sooooo tight
have you already done a video on that modular? looks nifty
Octatrack the perfect acid machine .. my world just got shifted a bit!
octatrack is just a sampler.. modular is making the acid machine roll
Tlate larre yes, I know that. Trust me: I’ve a faint notion of how shit works. I’ve been just referring to how the workflow of the octa seems ideal for this.
Pretty sure one of Elektron’s core principals is to make sure no one ever uses the term “intuitive” in relationship to their products. 🤪
hahahaa! well said, but not true...fortunately! It;s just that intuition is coming late but in huge amount...
“Let’s not waste any time.” (Plays intro sequence)
Top jam right at the end T-Dog! You should have indulged yourself for longer lol! I was totally feeling your rush with you :-)
Had to sell mine due to circumstances, felt like I’d lost an arm.
Luckily 12 months later and I’ve got a new one coming next week, not allowed to open it until the 21st though, it’s gonna be agony waiting ha ha
im just here to check if anyone else has commented on the protective display foil yet. No? ok. Dude, peel that foil off. And make a video of it.
