      thank you, and thanks for checking out my video! There is a bit of latency/jitter introduced from this so (among many other things) this is not a perfectly seamless technique, but it is still very useful. If you go to the early part of the percussion re-sampling example in this video you can hear the phasing changes created by the latency and jitter, because the re-sample is getting played directly on top of the original audio - every time a new re-sample is recorded the phasing sound changes a bit

    Great video(s)! Thank you so much for taking the time for recording and going through everything!
    Here are two shortcuts for you:
    1) When you want to adjust the master pattern length you can hold "func" + "up-arrow" (or "down-arrow") to increase (and decrease, respectively) the master pattern length by 16.
    2) When you are in the flex/static sample selection list and press "func" + "left arrow" (or "right-arrow") you select the previous (next) sample in the folder.

      really appreciate your comments! thanks a lot! I am not sure Octatrack is possible to truly master, has too many aspects and dimensions. I've been using one for over four years now and just making these videos the last handful of months has at least doubled or tripled my knowledge and abilities, I am often humbled by what I do not know or understand!

    I appreciate the work you have put in researching the techniques and creating these videos.
    This technique of conditional recording works well when applied to my modified field recordings.
    I also apply this to randomly record incoming audio especially generative sequences and sound generators from Reaktor such as Metaphysical Function or Skrewell.
    It can also work with sequenced instruments. I was thinking along the lines of Marc Scully in generating the notes from Octatrack but it is conceptually easier to sequence within the software and just record the output.

      thank you! very glad you're putting it to work! 👍 I actually bought the OT originally just to feed audio into it from my modular, and to use the MIDI sequencer for my modular gear. For my own purposes I generally find these re-sampling techniques are most easily used with atmospheric and non-percussive material in a less/non-rhythmic context but the challenges of using them rhythmically can sometimes lead to fantastic results

      hihi! not totally sure if this answers your question, but the MIDI triggers that cause re-sampling to happen all have trigger conditions on them - Transient Spaces didn't use any regular recording trigs

      one cool thing I found was mixing a probabilistic recording trig and a conditional recording trig on the same MIDI track, like set the probability one fairly low % and then use the conditional one at like 4:5 or something like that so there is a guaranteed time/place where re-sampling will eventually happen in addition to a place/time where re-sampling is more random

    Hi Max! can I achieve the same result hooking the OT to a Midihub (so I'll be able to set my Dawfor Recording Sync and Midi Modulations monitoring/recording) and then back into the OT, instead of loopin into it??

    This is absolutely brilliant and inspiring! The self arpeggiation is awesome.
    When it comes to the beat mangling you showed I'm just wondering if I couldn't get very similar results by doubling a sliced track and applying random slice selection to the second track? I'll have to look into it 🤔

      thank you! I think it's very important in this video to separate what are just typical sampling transformations from the underlying concept I'm attempting to illustrate using those sampling transformations. There are a wide variety of ways to achieve these sonic results, but the point of this video is not really about the particular sounds generated, but rather the way in which live re-sampling interacts with modulation and performance gestures - something much subtler, deeper, and more difficult to communicate without experiencing for yourself
      in biology, there is the term 'convergent evolution' which speaks very well to this - from Wikipedia - "Convergent evolution is the independent evolution of similar features in species of different lineages. Convergent evolution creates analogous structures that have similar form or function but were not present in the last common ancestor of those groups."

      Of course my comment was not meant to take anything away from your awesome idea. I think it's just that I still have an inherent lack of trust towards OT's recording buffers and seeing someone abuse them with such a reckless abandon fills me with dread.
      On a more serious note, this technique can be really powerful when it comes to emulating granular synthesis on the OT and also a great to overcome some limitations of the sampling engine (e.g. the arp). Looking forward to more OT explorations!

      no offense taken - and the idea isn't original to me so I can't take much credit anyway :) - your comment was just the second or third such kind of 'misunderstanding' I've encountered since posting this video and I wanted to philosophize about what these techniques mean to me in order to get past surface-level commentary and avoid going on a tangential discussion about basic sampling techniques that I don't view as really that important or essential to the core idea I am trying to communicate in this video. However if these fundamental sampling techniques are not well understood it may be easy to miss the somewhat subtle point I'm trying to make. I struggled a bit with making this video and wasn't sure what strategy for demonstration would be best - I could have even made it about 1-2 minutes long, and communicated the entirety of the core concepts but then I think people REALLY wouldn't get it :D

    Just want to start off by thanking you for taking the time to make and upload these tutorials. They are both enlightening and inspiring. Well done. Secondly I would like to ask you a question. I have been trying to implement the conditional sampling idea on my own set up. However instead of sampling a Flex machine I've been trying to sample external gear with the Thru machine. Which is also midi sequenced by the Octatrack. I connect the midi out to midi in (just like your set up in the video) and then another midi cable to external gear. This only leads to feedback. I've toyed around with the midi settings in main menu but haven't figured out how to avoid the feedback. I set external gear to midi channel 9 - 16 as I understand that anything below may lead to conflict. Have you tried anything like this?

      thank you! I can't offer much advice for more advanced or complicated setups other than you are going to have to dig through the MIDI implementation charts on all involved gear, and the MIDI send/receive options available to make sure you are doing things properly (OT MIDI implementation is not for faint of heart) and then you will probably want the ability to analyze your MIDI stream properly to troubleshoot issues as they are very easy to create for yourself in this type of MIDI feedback scenario (MIDI-OX or similar software is what I have used in the past to do MIDI analysis) I recommend you simplify and only add one piece of complexity at a time after you have verified everything works as expected at each stage.
      However, in general I do not recommend complex MIDI setups with multiple complex pieces of MIDI gear and weird MIDI routing schemes, in my experience I find they are a good way to spend all my time troubleshooting instead of making music. Also, I was a bit on the fence about publishing these kinds of MIDI loopback techniques as it's easy to shoot yourself in the face even just using a box all by itself :D

I get a kick out of figuring out the deeper intricacies of its ability, as much as making music with it. Even if someday's I just twiddled around aimlessly sowing and reaping nothing worthwhile. Sometimes the process of mechanical discovery almost reaches the superlative heights of sound. Both processes inform each other. Thanks for taking the time to chime in. Digging the tunes also.       thanks a lot! is certainly quite excellent to just explore, and I like to set aside time to do exactly that with no other purpose (it can often lead to excellent music even if that's unintended), but a balance has to be struck depending on my priorities at the time. Also I favor a strategy of thoroughly investigating each individual technique in order to internalize the concepts/implications, as something like the conditional recording technique is extraordinarily rich in terms of possibilities, so I find it is very important to explore this kind of complex technique in isolation before re-combining with existing strategies and workflows. Just like I'm often more productive using a relatively small amount of gear, I also find keeping techniques limited to often be very helpful as well!

    Hey, I am loving your tutorials! There is plenty of fresh ideas to cover! I wanted to ask you a (hopefully quick) question. When I am resampling it appears to me that playback of the sample trigs goes silent while the sampling is going on. On your video it appears to me that playback is still going while the sampling is happening as well, is this right? If so, is there some setting that I need in order to enable this?

      thank you! there are more than a few reasons playback will halt and this a somewhat tricky issue - it's something I hope to discuss in-depth in a future video after I have an opportunity to properly examine and test some of my current assumptions

      max marco hi max...love your stuff....did you ever look into this? I guess it’s something to do with setup in the recorder page PLEN and wotnot.....do you do octalessons over zoom or something? If so what are your rates? I’d be very interested. I’ve been using my octatrack for a year now but would like a second opinion on things like gain control, file management or indeed the issue raised above.. I’m sure you could help and I’d pay for your time.

    Videos are great man. Planning to order one of these tomorrow. A used mki, as an alternative to working on my Akai Force. One question, can it do trap type hi hat rolls? I saw a video where the Digitakt did it with retrig’s, and I wanted to be sure this could do the same?

      thanks! the octatrack has two types of retriggering - one is at the sample level and does not retrigger envelopes/FX, the other is at the trig level and also retriggers envelopes/FX

      yes and no - you'll have to be a bit more specific - do you mean the MIDI CCs? Re-sampling audio of course captures whatever it is that you hear at the time of re-sampling

      yes, just make sure to match the MIDI channels. one MIDI channel can also simultaneously control multiple audio tracks at once if you set the audio tracks all to the same MIDI channel

    do you need a certain midi cable for this? i'm not getting any midi interaction between the midi tracks and the audio tracks

      if the MIDI cable isn't broken, the two most common problems in my experience are incorrect OT MIDI settings, or accidentally plugging one end of the cable into the THRU port. Make sure to start from a blank project and the MIDI settings should already be set properly if you follow the exact steps I show in this video, which was filmed starting with a blank/default project

    Thank you very, very much for making all these tutorials. Personally I have issue not really seing what button you are clicking by clicking so fast between switches combos as the fingers are hiding a few switches. Not easy to see I mean. Between 2:35 and 2:38 for instance, there's no way for me to see what was clicked, no matter how often I go back between these few seconds (key back/foward on the computer keyboard to skip shortly and navigate through a YT video) and how hard I'm trying on my OT, I never have all patterns LEDs lit on at once like you (1 to 12), nor I arrive at this midi scale setup. I'll go to the manual to search how to arrive there, but I thought I'd leave this comment, hoping it can be constructive as there's a serious amount of time invested in making these videos.
