Power Station was something of a surprise back in 1985. When I saw their only live performance with the original line up(Palmer. Taylor, Taylor and Thompson) on Saturday Night Live, I was impressed not only by their sound(It simply rocked) but how musically diverse their musical stylistic backgrounds were(Palmer had British blue eyed soul, the Taylors were 80's New Wave/Alternative) and Tony Thompson a former member of a disco group, Chic). But it all worked. I guess you could call it Eclectic Chemistry.
Awesome stuff! This was when MTV actually played music. Where have these days gone to? Tony Thompson and Robert Palmer were awesome. Can't believe that they are both gone now. There needs to be a new cable TV station that plays nothing but music and stuff like this. There is a market for rock like this!
I worry as I get older,JT gets older and one day that I just can't comprehend 😭😭😭😭😭i just can't even think about it as it makes me cry being a lifelong DD fan. That's why I want to meet my 40 year crush before he goes😭i can't go there sorry

Who knew Palmer would be taken in his prime. A crying shame not least for his family. Fortunately he leaves behind a legacy of outstanding music. Got to see his Dominion gig on Tottenham Court Roas in 1980 which was really memorable. Good post.

He hadn't committed to a PS tour as he says here he nibbed Tony Thompson and Bernard Edwards (and also Andy Taylor on "Addicted to Love") and made his most successful solo album 'Riptide.' Robert had his first #1 Billboard Hot 100 single and won a Grammy for "Addicted to Love." Smart move by Robert who was amazingly talented.
It was a time of excellence in music. Good producers, musicians, etc...And these guys are so laid back and cool. Like "oh I just recorded a song for a Bond movie" like it was nothing lol (btw I love how the Bond villain in Quantum of Solace reminded me of Robert Palmer lol)
About touring, Robert explained in another interview that he thought the idea of a full on tour of major venues was totally out of proportion with the fact that they only had 8 songs.
I remember being REALLY disappointed when Palmer backed out of the Power Station tour that year. Michael Friggin' Des Barres?!? Was like replacing Joe Montana with Ryan Leaf. Glad I at least saw Palmer solo a few times before he passed... :(
Yes it was disappointing that Robert didn't tour with the Power Station. I saw the Power Station that year 1985. It was a good show because of John and Andy and Tony. Miss Robert though.

I was so upset because I thought he was so awesome as their singer. But when I got to the concert it took all of 2 seconds to see Michael Des Barres and fall in love with him. FKING AMAZING! Before the concert started I faked passing out hoping I would be taken to an area where I might get to meet the band. It was an outside concert so I didn't realize I would be taken under the stage and put on top of wooden crates that said Power Station which I assumed carried thier equipment or something. I was hoping to be right in front of where John was. I ended up in front of where Andy was for most the entire concert watching him absorbed into his jamming. God it was awesome!!!!! There was just so much for my teenage mind to see and go crazy over! What a very very cool experience 😎.

I've since read accounts of his cocaine habit....Watch his 1980 concert at Westfallenhalle, Germany (available on RUclips) and it's evident that he's on something. Sad but it went with the territory and lifestyle I guess.

I believe without JT Powerstation wouldn't have existed. Those guys owed their careers to him. JT was and is a genius in my humble opinion!
