Cooler than jittery Bowie, more stylish than pretentious Ferry and nicer than your average rock star. He was a great singer and a gifted songwriter. He painted from a broad pallette, and I think he liked the fact he couldn't be pinned down to one style. Sadly missed.
Tremendously well said, Euan Elliott. Exactly what I have always thought. Just a natural in singing his repertoire. One of the greats. God damned cigarettes. Sadly missed, indeed.
Class act; decent and humble. During college, I worked as a "red shirt" handling concert security needs. In late 1976, handled dressing room security for Palmer's Boston concert. No entourage, other than the driver and an A&R rep who was with him. The most unassuming rock star I ever met, on par with James Taylor. No drama, just pure class.
My girlfriend once said Robert Palmer was so good looking he probably got up in the morning, looked in the mirror and went "yep." She was right! He was also a phenomenal talent. Such a shame he's gone.
I'm convinced that the person behind the camera was a woman.....hence all the zooming in for close-ups and out again to check out the leather pants! I think he wore this outfit in 'You are in my system' video...Hotness? He has it in truckloads, for sure! So intelligent.
Every interview I've ever heard with Robert Palmer has been totally worth listening to. He was really as genuine as they come. When he did the Addicted to Love video with the pasty faced models, etc. he was tongue in cheek and knew EXACTLY what he was doing. An amazing vocal talent who left this world wayyy too soon.
This beautiful, talented and wonderful man wrote, produced, sang and enjoyed music to the maximum. There is no way that I can listen to Robert sing anything and not find myself moving and singing along with his music. If he wrote it or someone else wrote the lyrics. This man is solid gold and should be inducted into the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME!!!! WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!! RIP ROBERT, AND THANK YOU FOR BEING YOU!!!
+Carleen Sova Well said. I agree. He should have been in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame years ago. So upsetting that this highly talented, unique and (let's face it) totally gorgeous man wasn't sufficiently recognised in his all too short lifetime.
The RR HoF would rather put Percy Sledge or Dolly Parton in than RP. Sledge and Parton are great artists but RP deserves recognition in that silly RR HoF. He is one of the true, real greats. Sadly missed.
I thought it was so weird how the interviewer asked Mr Palmer not to smoke and he immediately put out the cigarette. I've never seen that. Usually when a musician lights up during an interview no one says anything.Robert Palmer is such a class act
but i think he REALLY bristled at that. You're right. What was the big deal about putting out the cigarette? You best believe they wouldn't DARE do that in the next interview after Riptide debuts! ya see the way he jettisoned that cig down to the floor? And then you watch him gaining control of his thoughts. I think smoking calmed his nerves and gave him something to do with his hands.
Could be that the chain smoking was starting to choke everyone out. It was said that he smoked 60 cigs a day. That's 3 packs. Can hardly remember knowing someone with that kind of a habit. Wondering how he made it to 54. That being said he was beautiful and genuine. Lived hard, died too young, left an impeccable mark.
Robert Palmer was an anomaly, an enigma in the music industry. He was loved and and admired, I don't think he was given enough credit to his craft. He definitely had a stand-alone style. A style that was emulated by numerous artists. He did it first really. I wonder what he would be up to now, what a loss. He is in every corner of my youth, along with Micheal Hutchence.
hey this guy was a beautiful human being not to mention all his great talent, I miss him first time I heard him was in 1978 every kind of people and got hooked now I am pretty sure he sings among angels
These interviews are stunning and they never get old. My husband and business partner had the honor of touring with Robert Palmer during the promotion of Don't Explain, released in 1990. He was very kind, a true gentleman with so much class. I was already a huge fan dating back to Johnny & Mary, Clues from 1980, so I totally flipped out when we got the word that he wanted Terrance's band to go on tour with him for a month in 1991, in the US. We were devastated when he died and still miss him, but still listen to his music all the time.
Just smooth. Classic, gentlemanly, suave, humble and unassuming..........and smoking hot to boot!! Lord have mercy. I miss him. He talks about that "singer with a voice or sound that comes along once in generation"........he was describing himself.
Robert was on the verge of rock stardom at the time of this interview. The 'next record project' he was referring to towards the end of the interview would be none other than 'Riptide' -- the one that would make him a household name with "Addicted To Love".
This is incredible... never seen it before.. Robert sir... you were iconic in my childhood and will never be forgotten.. I prayed for your soul today listening to you sing... I feel bad for the young people who never got a chance to hear you... you will live on forever in our thoughts... until we see you again..
He's so gentle and humble and tender, it makes my heart ache. I admire his intelligence, introspection and incredible, diverse talent. And of course, he is/was, utterly, utterly beautiful ! Such a gift to the world. May he rest in peace. Thank you for posting ! :)
I love how open-minded and enthusiastic he is about all kinds of music...not an envious, defensive person trying to narrowly define what is "good" and "bad" like insecure music aficionados running rampant on youtube.
That's sadly how most of my generation, millennials, are. Closed minded cynical wannabe critics, but that's what just being able to type an opinion has made people. The current generation... don't even get me started.
The sweetness you can see, a boyish smirk with a shimmer of sensuality. Michael Hutchence gave me the same vibe. Both beautiful men, big talent and taken far too early. Robert’s body of work is prolific and most of the good stuff no one has ever heard, unless they get down into the weeds of Blues and Soul. I keep Robert’s music in my rotation and on shuffle and regret never knowing any music other than what was given to me on MTV before he passed.
it's amazing how many people recognized his humility and classyness, to support the world's take on Robert, i saw him play in a tiny venue on the island of Guam, he just scored #1 with the hit 'addicted to love' ' and yet with that fame, he blessed us with an incredible performance! Classy just doesn't describe this man enough, to me he was a sort of a philanthropist who gitfed the people with LOVE RIP Robert🙏💖🙏
I was a fan of Robert Palmer from his sneaking Sally through the alley Days, and saw him in concert in Santa Barbara, CA back in the 80's. Man, I love this guy's music!
Just wonderful to see him being so attentive, humble and polite. He really shows a lot of respect for the journalists where he could have just taken the routine-answer-talk-a-lot-say-nothing exit...
beautiful, beautiful . . . God always gathers in the GOOD ones for Himself! I was fortunate enough to see him live in the early 80's. I was mezmorized. I adore this man and his wonderful music.
Im in my 40's, during this period 1985 I was a teen, all the facts about smoking was just beginning no warnings on cigarettes back then. I chose to smoke and Marlboro was $1.25 pack. The statistics were not in and it was pleasurable to smoke these Nicotine sticks especially with spirits. So Palmer was no doubt a victim of BIG TOBACCO. I stopped in the 90's, But I must say most of the 80's I enjoyed every cigarette I smoked. RIP Robert Palmer.
I'm grateful, kind stranger, that you stopped smoking! My saintly Father died, lost both legs to poor circulation(heavy smoking) last year.(2019) You're strong to admit, and quit.
I was aware of the dangers of smoking as a kid in the 70's. TV ads were banned in 1970. But yeah that's probably what got him. Not "big tobacco" but his choice to smoke. Even today people still choose to smoke and chew tobacco.
Robert was very honest about his musical influences and he was a very talented songwriter in his own right. It is a great shame that he is not with us today. Saw his Dominion Tottenham Court Road Live show and he brought the house down. He had great craft and picked the right musicians to show his songs in the best light. A sad loss. Thanks for posting this interview.
Sad he's gone. I never even knew, till today, gosh, here I am enjoying his music, did not even know he had passed. Gosh, and handsome too, Wow 😔😢💝 R.I.P. Robert
Wow, he seemed so nice! Loved how he mentioned all his musical influences, with such fondness. Such a Cool Guy! I’m off to listen to Go West and Shalamar now, for those voice comparisons. 😀
He was just fabulous. He had it all. I detected a bit of embarrassment at being asked to stop smoking. I can't stand that smell, & it KILLED this gorgeous man. But, I wanted to Nurse him when he looked uncomfortable.
Fantastic singer , songwriter, saw him live in Leicester once . Taken far too young RIP. Spoke to him briefly once after that Leicester gig, he said he was a songwriter and not a singer .
I love watching interviews with him. He’s a relaxing guy. I also like how he was so unrockstar like. He has said he rather relax at home reading a good book than being out all night on the town. He was the quintessential proper English Gentleman.
What at beautiful talent and gorgeous man! I still cannot believe he is gone! He left us wanting more! Just like a real, talented, artist. Robert Palmer had a an intense intellectual perspective of music of his day!
+Laura Kenney The damn camera man obviously hated Palmer. 1st, the camera guy told him to turn the cig off to make him more nervous. Then he kept zooming in on his face every time Palmer wasn't talking to catch any nervous twitches.
+ExclusiveLM No, I'm convinced it was a woman... all those close ups! His gorgeousness aside, this is such an interesting insight into his musical influences, including references to Radio Caroline which was a huge factor in my teens when it was anchored off the coast of Essex. How nice to know he was listening to it the same time as me!!
+Twosie76 that's a sweet thought.. listening to the same stuff at the same time! and I agree : it had to be a woman, as infatuated with RP as we are! that camera follows his every move. yeah, I LOVE this interview!!😊
He talks about Otis the way I love him. And many others. Especially the styles of music he appreciates which is seemingly never static and like a wall builds like a wall brick by brick... I adore this, and I shall. This man was very intriguing, sexy and wonderfully himself because of himself. Extraordinarily unique and humble person. Brilliant example of a man. A real man. God Bless you, Robert. God Bless.
I fell in love with him at 16 (76) with sneaking sally. Fantastic music which I still have. So upset when he. Died. This interview just showed what a marvellous person he was with such. Intelligence
I love this man! If she didn't want him to smoke she should have told him beforehand not during the interview to demean him. I would have walked out of that interview for her being so disrespectful! It wasn't like today. Back then people smoked everywhere.
Saw Robert at the Wembley Arena in the early 1990`s, so good...superb. The place was rocking at the foundations during "Johnny and Mary"..............unforgettable. So wish you were still with us Robert.
Thank you for this posting. I'm a singer, and it was always such a pleasure (and challenge) to sing his songs. I could never come close to his performances, but that's okay cause he's the original. And I miss him.
Can you imagine what it would be like to look in the mirror, and have that beautiful, lush hair, and chisel features to your face, and have a great voice, and be famous all at the same time? Lol. You have to admit, it would be nice to not have the ability to take a bad photo...Yeah, of course you’re legitimately enjoying your life, here, R.Palmer....Of course. 😃😀😎
When he says Otis Redding, Lena Horne, Billi Holiday, Arabic singers, African percussionists, Miles and James Brown are the ones he listens to your are hearing a very musically knowledgeable cat. His music was hip just as he was. Loved Robert Palmer.
Cooler than jittery Bowie, more stylish than pretentious Ferry and nicer than your average rock star.
He was a great singer and a gifted songwriter.
He painted from a broad pallette, and I think he liked the fact he couldn't be pinned down to one style.
Sadly missed.
Three of them are always cool dudes to me, except Bob is number one.
All three are great and I like all three artists.
Tremendously well said, Euan Elliott. Exactly what I have always thought. Just a natural in singing his repertoire. One of the greats. God damned cigarettes. Sadly missed, indeed.

Gone way too soon! I Love you Robert Forever💔
Class act; decent and humble. During college, I worked as a "red shirt" handling concert security needs. In late 1976, handled dressing room security for Palmer's Boston concert. Glad to hear that..love him madly..solid sex symbol💙
Also so happy to hear that he was as he appeared-tragic loss in every way, lost him much too soon. ❤️🔥💔❤️🔥
My girlfriend once said Robert Palmer was so good looking he probably got up in the morning, looked in the mirror and went "yep." She was right! He was also a phenomenal talent. Such a shame he's gone.
According to his own words, he didn't like being in front of a camera because he didn't like his appearance.
I'm with her -- sexy, sexy man, and killer music. you have to get up and dance to many of his songs, and the others you just sit back and groove!
I guess your girlfriend wasn't into you
And then he opens his mouth and that beautiful accent comes out, that charm, that talent...oh my...I miss him, too!
One of the greatest ever❣
A genius who left too soon .
busyhive cigarettes
Absolutely.
Indeed, and a rather gorgeous one too.
A very honest, and genuine guy. Sadly missed.
Beautiful man, beautiful voice and beautiful personality.
So suave and so worldly....he is missed!
he was so attractive and a beautiful soul
Yeah.
O Yes He Had The Whole Package😊
Harry Styles reminds me a bit of him appearance wise especially, with the way Palmer looks in this video.
He really was....I was so sad when he passed. He was always a favorite of mine. He was such a talented, classy guy.
@@seamusin1697 Give Harry Styles another ten years and I reckon he could play him in a Movie.
Robert Palmer was the James Bond of music
Gr8 one!!
I've never seen this before. he is so intelligent, so nice. and that smooth voice of his...I could listen to him forever💖
+Laura Kenney Me too! and look at that smile forever too.
+Twosie76 he is beyond handsome and hot...whatever it is, Robert has it!
I'm convinced that the person behind the camera was a woman.....hence all the zooming in for close-ups and out again to check out the leather pants! I think he wore this outfit in 'You are in my system' video...Hotness? He has it in truckloads, for sure! So intelligent.
+Twosie76 haha good observation! I guess Robert had us all under his spell...I'm still under it...but you already know that 😆
Yes yes yes I agree

When he did the Addicted to Love video with the pasty faced models, etc. he was tongue in cheek and knew EXACTLY what he was doing. An amazing vocal talent who left this world wayyy too soon.
Absolutely the best looking man ever in rock, blues and soul, and the epitome of class.
I can't imagine this man ever being upset, mad, or evil...In every interview I've seen he seems like just a genuine gentleman. Pure class.
Grace to his parents

As a Yorkshireman I’d like to think we’re all chuffed to have him as a fellow County-man. Gone far too soon, what a talented and charismatic man.
Robert Palmer was ridiculously good looking with a G*d given voice ! He is one of my greatest influences . Wish he was still around .
