I'm not self taught cause you're my teacher
amen
You pretty much are.
Lol
Lol same
ive seen you comment on all of his vids lol
we were high af and my friend thought you were jonah hill. your awesome.
😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣💀💀💀
😂😂😂😂
How'd it go?
Your were high with your friend and you decide to watch "4 lead guitar 4 techniques to master" lmaoo😂😂
This quarantine thing sure has given me lots of time to practice lots of guitar
Agreed
same
Me too brosef! Check out the RUclips channel "Elevated Jam Tracks". You can practice lead guitar and soloing with the videos there. The composer even shows the scale patterns that go with the rhythm guitar. I mastered the Dorian scales using his tracks. There are tons of different backing tracks you can use. I found a 7 minute backing track for the solo section of Stairway to Heaven. The backing tracks can be your band for when you practice.
same here man!
Spooky Dave I bet your better at it to
Probably noone on RUclips I trust more than Marty..I feel like I could call him if my car is stranded and he'll come help me out lol
He's a real buddy, I tell ya!
Your Awesome. ive recently been injured to the point of disability. hadn't played in abt 5 yrs, but now that this about all i can do my son decided to pick up a guitar and i now teach him and we use your lessons to teach him with and your more advanced things to help me knock off cobwebs. at 43 i hate my situation and find it hard to admit no more football with my son who is only 14 or riding bikes kinda thing either. Hell, i couldn't get in my hunting stand this year or walk our trails so had to give that up to for now at least, but we have bonded over the guitar and its made the last year a bit better sir. thank you sir for offering a free music education of higher caliber & sincerity from you because i cant afford to do what we are getting to do if it wasn't .
Great story friend. Hope you guys find more fun things to do together, I miss my dad a lot especially our fishing trips and blueberry picking trips. Take care
OMG 69 LIKES!!
my story is very similar, and sometimes it seems all I have
Fuck, that got me right in the feels
@@Chief.BigKnees very emotion awh man i miss my dad
Actually this is my favorite Marty instructional video. Shows how to do the scale as a whole scale and then how it works/sounds without dwelling too much on each note.
thanks dude
That telecaster has amazing tone
It doesn't get brighter than a tele.
HOVEY BENJAMIN WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE OMG
i mean it's a fender what do you expect
Hovey Benjamin it really dose man
Wanted a tele but what colour can’t make up my mind.....😩😩
marty gets my like because of all the "self taught" guitarists that would be nothing without him including myself
May the blues be with you
May the Schwartz be with you*
@@anudistsjury spaceballs 😂
They went plaid!!!!😂😂
ohhh yes may it be with us
I see your Schwartz is as big as mine...
I love how things always connect in guitar. Its almost magical.
Everything repeats just like on a piano. Once you learn the extensions you can unlock the neck in minor pentatonic. Or major pentatonic scales. In any key to with the exact same concept. Been using that to get by on for a while now and everyone has said my playing has improved in leaps and bounds. I dig Marty's videos he is always on the ball.
Then it's a case of learning diatonic scales. Using the same concept. Then on to frigian scales ect until you got the whole of the scales unlocked. Finding the extensions for most of the scales and your on to a winning formula. That's why I like these videos. They work for unlocking the neck. If you can do it in a minor key you can do it in a major key then your well on your way.
Almost like it’s a map instead of a puzzle once you get the big picture
Its hard too put too words what it feels like when you uncover something and find and figure something new on the guitar like this.
Dude. I wish I would have learned this 20 years ago. Thank you so much. I’m so excited to have learned this. I’m going to practice the hell out of it and it will launch me into a higher plane.
How’d it help????
same i wish youtube was around when i learned how to play guitar as a teen
@@trogman43988 Can't imagine how difficult guitar must have been for those learning as a teen in say the 90s or something. Gives me so much more respect for the famous guitar players out there haha
Really love it when u slip that jimi hendrix’s all along the watchtower riff around 11:20, took me by surprise! This is really an eye-opener and a new insight to my guitar study, thanks marty.
IK! LOVE ALL AROUND THE WATCH TOWER
So this was all in the key of C? How do you change key? And when he had the root on the A string playing the minor pentatonic...wouldn't that be g minor? Not C? Was super excited at first but got confused in the end lol
Can you please do all along the watchtower pt.3 as a Christmas gift to us
Marty is such a great teacher! I also like Paul Davids. These two guys combined have taught this 61 year old lots😄
You don't just provide some great lessons, but it's entertaining to see that you are really growing as a guitarist.
I don't even have an electric guitar.......but here i am........again
Buy one
Yea, pick one up, itll change your life
@@victormealing5162 it certainly changed mine.
acoustic solos sound great
@@tj03297 yep especially the solo in acoustic version of sir Eric Claptons Layla
Hi! These simple excerises are really good for reasons that Marty is not telling: 1) They are pretty safe patterns for effective little solos for beginners and intermediates. 2) They teach you to think horizontally along the neck which is good because most beginners still think in vertical chunks (Which is not bad, but limits expression) 3) I have found that focusiing in index and ring finger corrects many fingering wromg tendencies.
That's what I have found as an intermediate player about these.
You're a very good teacher my friend!!!
Got to give this man some credit, ive watched a bunch of his videos dating back to 2009, have learnt allot from this man. Its nice to get free good lessons.
Thanks "4" those techniques. Learning how to set up & adjust my guitar is time saving & money saving, perhaps a video on the basics for those who need it would be good.

I have been practicing scales for so long and haven’t really known what to do with them. I feel like my eyes have been opened after watching this. Thank you 🙏🏼
Guitar lesson on 'Money' - Pink Floyd please?
Marty, I've been playing guitar for 55 years and 45 of that has been performing 4x/week in church music. This drill is PRICELESS in 2 ways: adding some life to the sameness of the genre AND giving me a means for getting myself sharper! Thank you & God bless you.
2:15 I was eating a pop tart as he said that🤔
11:15
That was the slickest All Along The Watch Tower plug I've ever seen 😂
Tyler Bennion frl😂😂
That's Born under a Bad Sign

dude i really thought the video was speed up
Video was sped up Look at his shoulder
Kyle Montiel-Berner no look at his picking hand it stays the same
Absolute Shred
Looks like when Gilligan would catch his pants on fire! 🔥
As I am beginner, I do not know if it a big stuff or not, but out of numerous tutorial there is, I really for the first time understand how to use scale to play lead. This one you get to know to learn and play lead. This is not just technique tutorial, it is the application of the technique. Thanks a lot from the bottom of my heart. You do really give good stuff and keep making a difference.
My man Marty, very very lightly fast forwarding some of those parts 😂 you’re good……. You don’t need to fast forward in very small areas, those hand motions when doing the scale/slides….. it looks normal till ya slide that hand, and then it’s like “ YEAH OKAY ! “ once again …… MARTY,… is a beast….. but why the fast forwarding 😂
Absolutely beautiful tele. ...what year model is that beauty....thanks Marty
Great video! Thank you!!! I’m going to use this in my practice sessions
Apart from good timing and perfect pitch - Vibrato, gate time (when to stop a note - is as important as when to start a note), velocity on and on - these small little things that make up a good sounding guitarist. that many guitarists miss out on their playings and make them sound just bad without knowing why. And a lot of guitarists don't even know that they sound bad because they don't record and listen to themselves as often as they should be and compare with pro guitarist so they don't even recognise what's good and bad.
I’ve been “self taught” for years and years but really I’ve just been grabbing pieces of wisdom from you and experimenting with it my own way. I start gigging next week so I have to say thank you my teacher, you’ve served me well Marty. Just bought your lead and CAGED courses online.
Hilarious getting the ‘dude! stop trying to learn guitar solos using scales’ ad while watching this haha
Great lesson, excited for these drills to improve my playing!
Man, YOU'RE FUCKING AWESOME.
Hey Marty,
Great lessons.
I like your simple and laid back attitude. Just the right amount of humor and not going all over the place.
Thanks to your videos, I'm slowly but surely taking in all that precious information (videos). It doesn't come easy!
Keep up the great work.
Cheers,
Eric
With this lesson I finally find myself flying around the fretboard when I solo, not just locked in the minor pentatonic boxes. Thank you Marty!
nice job, but in all honesty your fingers moving so fast just made it a little hard to follow what your actually doing
been watching learning and loving Marty since before he had salt in that pepper!
he is true and reliable friend to many!
These are great to know, but they can also become so familiar that we revert to them too often. Exploring different scales, and learning the 7 modes and seeing how they all connect is really important too! Harmonic minor, and diminished scales are a great way to spice up your playing.
Agree, I also don't really see how this will help my playing.
@@TheFakeyCakeMaker it will help my playing, can’t wait until My skills approach yours :) I’m having an amazing time learning guitar !
Really love the beard marty
Luffy??? Yo can learn guitar from Brook. Dont you??
Brook's always busy seeing panties yohohoho
3:34 thank you Marty I’m gonna practice that
I started to cry a little at the 3:57 mark 😭 I just picked a guitar up 6 months ago. I thought I was learning a lot. But I’m still only on basic scales around the first 3 frets. I want to do what u do. But I don’t even know what pentatonic means. I hope to get this good one day. Lol. Ughhhhhh
It's OK Ashley, just start on your journey, start with the first video from this list: ruclips.net/p/PLP3kvqg_Ut84qfZ6J353L8QXDdRY_fJhn
Marty Music thank you so much. I’m gonna start from the beginning. I’ve learnt the notes up to the first 3 frets. Just not the 6th string yet. I’m glad I came across ur videos. I’m not super beginner. But still new to terminology. Thanks for helping people. When I learn I’m gonna pay it forward to ❤️
@@ashleyjacquot904 hows your progress going
youll get it.... i thought i never would but you will...
Pentatonic means five any key has basically seven notes and then your eight which is an octave
For c major you have the notes c d e f g a b c C major pentatonic is five notes namely c d e g a That's root second third fifth and sixth
It's the scale used a lot in rock blues and even trad and many other musical types. It's scale that fits a lot of chord progressions though not all
If you want to be a great guitarist always follow the chords when soloing and keep watching Marty as he is great to watch
The intro track sounded like Born Under A Bad Sign. Marty, you are the man.
i've learned open chords, fast changes, bar chords, power chords, alternate picking and minor pentatonic scale and was thinking what to do next beside training those further, now i watched this vid and im like DAMN i HAVE TO learn those, like desperately, i feel this is the best thing. Thank you Marty
Hey Marty, thank you so much for your teaching us struggling "want-a-be's". Right on lessons, great attitude, one of the best teaching set of lessons on the Web. How about letting us watch you play with your band jamming at a real show? That would be great fun to watch and very inspiring. Thanks, again
I'm struck by how still your right hand is while you shred. Such smooth sounding HO/PO that it looks like your right hand just barely moves.
Awesome Marty 🤘🎸
Thanks for this Marty. Watching something like this and then practising religiously will no doubt speed up my solos while still keeping them moderately simple. It's just what I need!
"Waiting for a pop tart" has to become a real song, Marty. Think about it.
I've been playing for years on and off... And this lesson right here just opened so many doors to me I feel like a beginner again... Thank you so much Marty 💯
hey marty newbie here
..my name is jim...ive been playing for a long time of seven days now..just wanted to say thanks for ur vids...i have a long way to go but ur vids are so very helpful,,,thank you jim
Marty is like your roommate in college that says, hey I’m a music major, wanna learn guitar tricks?
You are my no.1 teacher on RUclips. Thanks for the awesome lessons Marty
I've been watching and learning since 2013 man, Marty brother you have helped me through so many dark days. Thank you brother
I appreciate that
I appreciate you and your lessons brother don't ever stop doing what you are doing
@@MartyMusic When it comes to the extended pentatonic, I can play going up the scale fine but going back down???? Are you pulling off or alternate picking that fast???? Please explain Marty I'm an idiot and can't tell what your doing no matter how I slow it down or watch and I'm EAGER to play like that lol. Love the vids
Why does your bass have 6 strings??? weird..

@@SeventhShadow27 finally a man of culture
I love this man, and his lessons. I hope he knows how much he helps us rookie players explore and grow.
Great lessons Marty. I am a beginner. Without out diagrams it’s hard to follow your fast fingers.i guess your lessons are more for intermediate?
Not sure what is cooler: Marty playing this blues or the fact that he just taught me how. Amazing.
I know how to run the scale but that's all I do. I can't come up with licks in my head. What can I do?
Same here
Had same issue. Loop pedal was breakthrough. Make a couple chord progressions then shut off the brain and just listen as you jam over the loop.
Find you some backing tracks on RUclips that fit the particular scale your running! First try and think of a melody in your head, and then try to use the scale you know to mimic it! Remember to keep your creativity simplistic in the beginning! Don't think of something you wouldn't be able to play yet! I've been playing lead for 20 year's, and the best licks I've got are the one's I developed on my own! Also search for licks relatable to the genre and key your scale is in! Remember when it's blues that you'll always use the parallel minor scale(blues scale)! Just don't forget to add the blues note in, that Marty mentions in this video! If your blues song is in G, then you'll use the G minor pentatonic(with the added blues note)!
@@justinleshaymusic4952 !!!! Is your period key broken?
@@mattcelder punctuation police? God damn virgins...nothing else better to do!😉
I feel like if Marty was a guitar he would be a cream colored telecaster. I cant be the only one haha
I watch Marty for help learning the best way to explain guitar. I’ve played for ever but it’s hard to explain in an easy way to understand. I figure maybe a few hundred more videos of Marty and I’ll have a better chance relaying my thoughts where they can be understood better and hopefully actually help people? It’s harder than people think to instruct no matter how well you play!
Great video!!! LOVE that tele. But, hey dude! Where's your switch tip?😝
Go ahead Marty...you can say it...."This is my FAVOURITE guitar" ;-)
Good teacher, but Marty is really a competent lead guitarist
Hi thank you this lesson has really give me a huge jump in understanding scales and extending them as I'm really struggling to understand, is they other specific videos you have that covers this category please thank you once again.
Rewatched 03:52 so many times. Been watching you for so long and did not expect that speed
I’ve been watching Marty for years and I’m still amazed how badass this dude is
Perfect video for beginners who want to look like pro’s fast. Outside of practicing, I’d just suggest listening to awesome solos so u get a better idea of how scales actually become improv. This video is great!
THANK YOU!!! looking at the scales in this way is a lot easier than memorizing the 5 boxes
could you recommend a similar practice routin for getting good at rhythm guitar techniques?
i dont get which strings to pluck does the slide require a pluck or just hammer on???
Thank you Marty! The blend of skill and personality you have makes it engaging and fun to keep pushing through obstacles and continue learning.
Bro please slow down so I can see what you’re doing
This lesson really tied all the parts together and opened my eyes. I am sure gonna practice like this from now on! Thanks Marty!
Great lesson and love that Tele with the maple neck!
Dude... that's the first thing I thought. That thing screams "Maple" in the beginning too.
I had all the pieces to the puzzle and you just helped me expertly put them into place. Thank you very much for taking the time to show me You helped me a lot. Cheers!
WOW! I actually followed that! You unlocked it!
Marty you’re one heck of a guitar player! 🎸hope I can sound like u one day!!!
Just put In lots of hours into practicing.
Thanks Marty. You are my favorite utube teacher.
I’m the lead guitars and vocals in my 3 man band so I def need this
I had my Poptarts so I'm ready for the lesson 😂👍🏻
1 question
How the hell can i play this good when i’m older??? I really want to become a good player😭😭
How old are you
NothingHereToWatch 15 why?
could anyone tell me how to play the minor pentatonic scale and the extended scale? 😅 he goes so fast
Actually I like this Telecaster more than the strat and I have nothing to say about the guitar teacher. Though he is great
Crooked TV does sound beautiful. I always think should I have bought a Stratocaster. When i hear sound like this I’m really glad I have a Tele.
Patrica HEH me too. I like the sound of a tele. I also have a tele.
I really like the tone of a Tele but not the shape, my favourite guitars of all time are the mustangs, jaguars and jazzmasters. Fender guitars have fantastic tones
Kurt Donald Cobain you're right. I'm also not a fan of the shape. But I think jazzmaster is more heavier than strat.
Yellow Telecasters will always be linked to Albert Collins for me. What a blues-man!
I remember him walking/dancing/swinging past me through the audience in a solo as long as the cable that took him to the back of the hall. No wireless in those days…
Marty, me and my guitar pals all want you to do a lesson on high voltage by ac/dc - thanks
Hmm? Use "the Schwartz". Good stuff man! Much appreciated.
@Descanso I see you Schwartz is as big as mine
Born Under a Bad Sign, I've been down since I began to crawl. This song is a Blues standard.
Thank you very much for these
Marty is the bomb. Great lesson. Love Lead!!
Those clothes with the blonde telecaster works so well, I've never thought of matching clothing with the guitar until now. Thank you for looking slick Marty and teaching these lessons!
the mf truth right here. an audience is LIKE A DATE! u hear what u see!!!!!
This is the reason one needs many guitars in the closet to wear. They are accessories lol
@@missrepresentit8854 Lol 😂

blimey, parts of the solos look like they've been speeded up !
I've been playing the rhythm guitar for all my life because I never dared to solo (and I had no knowledge). Now, in my late twenties, you literally opened up a (quite easy, as it seems!) world for me. THANK. YOU.
Same :)
I was literally getting in to a pentatonic drill burnout headspace when this video played next ......thank you, again Marty!
Marty I’ve been playing guitar for 3 years now, and I’ve watched your videos for almost just as long. Your videos helped me a lot when I got started and still do. Thanks a lot.
I sure wish I knew this stuff when I was 12 or 13 instead of 60;)
How do you make it seem so easy 😭😭

Yes! this would be great - would be excellent to do a looper pedal tutorial on this one with the different parts!
