Probably the most simply yet effective lesson I've seen on RUclips. I'm 71, teaching myself for three years, and this is actually making me sound okay.
Actually I'm usually embarrassed to let anyone know that I'm not more advanced on the guitar for my age 69, 70 in January. Ive always been more a strummer/singer but always wanted to learn lead and frills while singing and playing; it makes your singing sound so much more interesting.
I'm 57 and trying to not let people know that I'm trying to learn playing guitar..but you my brother being 71 and learning have encouraged me big,big time, I feel alone now in this musical adventure.thank you
In the age of information overload, THIS. Simply taught me more in 10 minutes then hundreds of hours content "masterclasses" . THANK YOU!! More like this please!!
I'm in the middle at 81 can't wait to try this out this afternoon You lay it out so well wish I had you as a mentor way back I wouldn't have with so often love guitars and guitar music and singing with guitar have played in many bars campfires And parlors but not as well as I would have liked to
Been playing guitar for 30 years and am pretty good for rhythm. In a few minutes you gave me more useful information than any of the lead guitarists I have played with. Thank you so much for this. Learning to play lead is my focus now and this taught me so much !!!!
40 years playing guitar. I assumed that the next 40 would be utterly void of any attempt to play lead of any sort. This will be an absolute game changer for me, and free me from chords only mentality. Thanks so much. 👍
Your are the best guitar teacher I've found on RUclips! After decades of fooling around with guitars, I'm finally starting to sound like more than just a simple chords player. Thanks for doing such a great job of taking things slowly and clearly explaining what these boxes represent and why they work so well with their related chords. Once a person realizes that the root of these boxes relates to the the pertinent chords, it's easy to see how boxes all over the neck can be used for various chord progressions. Thank you so much!!!!
I'm 70 and try to learn each day. Keith Richards said "I still am learning to play the song I wrote in the 60's." if Keith is still learning can't we? 💡 777🎸
Thank you so much for your lesson !! I'm 71, and been playing blues and rock guitar for a number of years. Yet, I learned from your great video !! Staying simple is THE key...
Brian, I am 79 years old and have tried to understand how to make the blues sounds. I got that good feeling from the first video of yours that I saw. You are a great teacher. Thank you for your simplicity. The two greatest lessons of clarity for me came from your triangle and square and your drop back three for the major pentatonic scale. I don't have a musical ear so I have to do things mechanically. Thank you again for your time and effort. Playing the blues can bring a lot of happiness. Thank you again.
Im 71 and played most of my life. Subscribed to Active Melody for 3 years. If a player wanted to learn just about every style and level, Brian it the guy! Excellent instructor and keeps it fun.
Wow, you enlightened the fan 97 years breathing! Well done, and blessings. Only 66 years loving 🎶 playing as a diversion from stress. You're a good teacher. Stay Golden
You are a very good Teacher! I've been playing since 1963 and I found it interesting, and thought, where were you when I was figuring all this out on my own? You young players, subscribe to this guy! You'll learn alot.
Here to say what everyone else is saying. The simplistic beauty in your explanation is so easily digestible. So so thankful I got this lesson as a 8 week newb rather than 20 years in. The encouragement I needed. Thank you!

Finally a guitar tutor who GIVES a rank beginner basics that actually give the feeling - and fact - that I’m really playing guitar! And not feel like an idiot or failure. You are THE MAN.
I have played Guitar for 50 years , but have learnt more from your short vidio than i have in my entire life. Love your teaching and you have one hell of a grate personality . Hoping to learn a lot more from your lessons. I was not a bad player but i was far from great. Never was great at improvising a lead guitar solo so i just played the song as close as i could to the original. Keep up the great lessons. Eric.
Wonderful. 68, picked up guitar again after years of letting it sit. Am a member of Active Melody. Love the way you teach. Very thorough, clear, simple. Very easy and enjoyable to listen to. Every one of your lessons I've gone through so far, I've learned a lot. Awesome job!
Finally...Someone who can identify our true requirements and deliver them in the most understandable way. I am actually playing lead guitar now!! Long may you live and teach Sir...
oh my my, oh hell yes, finally someone to explain this mess... great job. Like others here I have been playing for many decades and have never been able to put it all together, watched a ton of beginner videos and would always get a glazed and confused feeling and give up.. have found a go to channel and after 50 plus years I get it. Thank you !
For 40 years I've stuck to cowboy chords. Recently I've made some inroads on playing single notes but have scoured RUclips looking for somebody that would give tips and tricks to tying together the fretboard. This is a fantastic example of that. Huge for me. Thank you!!
I must tell you. I am a beginner acoustic player and after I practice chords and for fun I was hitting those “boxes”, but I didn’t understand or how to connect them. This is so enjoyable. Thank you for your help
I'm an Active Melody member, but just happened to be poking around RUclips when I came across this lesson. Whoa, Brian, you've really done it again--terrific lesson, very understandable, great takeaways. Thank you!
I have been playing guitar since about 12 years of age and I am now 54 years old and I totally understand this lesson but I sure wish someone could have taught it to me way back then the way you just did... you make it so much more understandable without complicating it for the beginner to average guitarist. You are a great teacher to say the least.
More than 50 years playing here and I learn from you the best out of all the teachers on RUclips. Sometimes it’s a matter of finding someone that speaks the way you hear I guess. I like this teacher above all others.
As you so rightly say you can go around and around in circles forever watching videos learning shapes but not playing music. As a beginner for about the fifth time I think you've finally shown me a simple way to start making music. Thank you so much.
This is probably the best lesson I've ever seen for solo bedroom guitarists to convince their friends and family that they have reached virtuoso status. Sounds professional yet deceptively simple for someone progressing into their intermediate phase (with practice of course).
I have always looked and learned by patterns since playing guitar at age 10. 50 years later this video would have served me well back 1963 when I started. Thanks so much!
The simple blues always calls to you. @7:33 Just those notes everyone plays them their own way. Its beautiful. Each player has their own version of these same notes. Just hearing his little ditty in the beginning or his turnarounds, your ear says OH YA.
I have been trying to find out how to play lead for many years and whenever i ask a teacher they assign me a practice lesson that has nothing to do with the question I asked them. But THIS, Wow. I have been subscribed to Brian for I think 4 or so years and this lesson is an eye opener. Love you Brian. :)
Quite an interesting lesson Brian. It's motivational, it's simple, and it's a confidence builder. Most of us, no matter how long we have been playing really need a confidence that helps us encourage ourselves that all that practice is paying off in progress. This is like when you have been on what seems like an endless quest to learn something and for what feels like an eternity where you don't see any noticable progress and then one day you pick up your strings and music effortlessly flies from your fingers. You haven't "arrived" but you've closed a chapter that opens the door for exciting new adventures.
66 and i cant even express how happy i get after watching your lesson and then put it to work iv had a guitar all my life but never got any wair my friend who was a musician passed away but he would all ways say play the guitar any way if you dont get it exzactly you will here it and somthing ells will sound as good just do it i like your style thank you brian
Thanks you have changed how I play dramatically. Teaching this old fella ain't easy but you have opened my eyes to how play without backing tracks. Simply amazing. Cheers from Nova Scotia!
I just want to say hello, i've learnd more from you in a few videos than from any others in a years! Thanks and God bless you, you are wonderful human being❤️greetings from Split, Croatia!
This guy is the best guitar teacher I have ever seen period. End of story. The explanation is so easy to understand, it’s fluid, it makes sense and it isn’t pretentious!! That’s hard to do. None of the other teachers on YT can do this. My own guitar instructor in person could use a few of these pointers!
Been playing 23 years. This guy knows what he is talking about!!! Took me my first 3 years to learn that you write music in a key. A minor pentatonic is the perfect scale to learn first bc its relative major is C major pentatonic.
So you don't confuse anyone. C major= CDEFGABC scale. Am =same notes, different start point. Still all white keys. ABCDEFGA scale. The intervals (spaces between notes) makes it sound sad. Particularly where B and C are (minor 2nd between them, think the Jaws theme. Psycho soundtrack has several and so does Carpenter's Halloween) and E and F. Anyone dying to know, the Jaws theme is E....F...E...F (with the occasional low D in there) When writing minor scales, they like lower case in college. So you'd write am. They're big on Roman numerals and solfege if you're a singer (Do a Deer by Julie Andrews) and thinking about going to major in music. City colleges has a lot for free or cheap. The have music majors.
A fantastic lesson, even for those of us that have been playing a while. I’ve been struggling with remembering all the shapes but this lesson just helped me simplify it back a bit and focus on playing, not remembering all the box shapes
I think you know how great it is to be great teacher inspiring people to make music. You are really doing good. Making people's lives better. Thank you.
Awesome Brian! Love these short videos for figuring out beginning lead and other stuff too. I like how you keep everything simple instead of this mind melting stuff from other teachers. Thanks Brian, please it coming.
I'm a 732 year old immortal who started later in life with a 15th century lute.. Took till now to learn how to get to the next level. Just goes to show no matter how long you tinker you really need a good teacher to progress!!! ... In all seriousness thanks for the lesson :)
A whole world opened up after watching this video. I have been a professional rhythm strummer and singer for years, but could never connect the chords with fills(without Tablature). I have learned the secret about key and box patterns now. THANK YOU!
Brian, you have such a great talent for breaking things down to the most simple form. There's more value in this 12-minute video than many of the books that I have spent months learning from in the past. Having been a premium member for the last 3 years you have also taught me the ability to take something like this and build on it by moving the shapes into the Major Pentatonic (sliding everything down 3 frets) and finding the chords in other positions on the neck using the CAGED system. Thank you Brian and Happy New Year!
Brian, as a 56 year old self taught professional entertainer of 51 years, I still look at development as I reach retirement. I must say, I really enjoyed this video, and you may find me as a regular. You teach things in such an easy way for people to learn.
Everything you do, Brian, sounds fantastic! Great starter lesson here. For those who like the sound of what Brian demonstrated here, check out the EP155!
Hands down the best improvisation/soloing video I've watched on YT. I'd like to say I've ventured into intermediate level and have been struggling with creating appealing music on my own. This video has gotten me excited about practicing my improv and finding my own style.
I've been playing for about 10 years and can't play lead at all. This video is really awesome. Thanks a lot Sir. Your methods are definitely useful. 🙏❤️❤️❤️
My daughter and I started playing just a couple of months ago. This has been the single most helpful video that we've found. 47 year olds have an advantage with hand strength and size, 10 year olds have much better memory. We're having fun driving mom and big brother nuts. Apparently, we play the same stuff over and over. They love making fun of our riffs vocally.
Been playing for many years and this has been the best video I have seen..thank you for the most comprehensible technique that I can share with others!
I've only commented on a few videos in my many years of RUclips, and this is a really great video. This is exactly what I needed: a simple new concept, not overly technical, to help me think outside my regular playing style and broaden my horizons. One great takeaway for me is that this pattern/concept can be played as slowly as you want to, making me feel like I learned a new blues song to jam along to while I build up speed and confidence in my lead-playing ability...and all of this using only three easy chords! Thank you so much! Well done.
Huge help! I've been jamming rhythm guitar playing stoner rock and metal for 30 years, but I've never found lead approachable. This lesson gave me a starting point that actually feels good. Thanks!
have to say this is the best lesson i've seen for getting going with minor pentatonic blues lead - by a mile! - particularly the slide up to the higher octave box. cheers
I really suck at lead. I'm good at picking, and strumming, but I see a 10 yr old kid tearing it up and I feel defeated before I start. So I'm going to basics and this is very timely.
An excellent video. A great teacher who understands how to break it down and feed it up in easy to grasp terms, not just the technical but also the creative. Thank you.
Hey Brian, this was an awesome lesson, as are all of your lessons! It would be helpful to us less experienced players if you could take a minute to tell us how those chords are formed. I can play them all day with open strings but I’m not used to playing in that region of the neck. Keep up the awesome work!
Brilliant explanation. Folks this is gold! He showed Am. Next, find Bm, then Cm, the Dm, etc. Just keep finding the root of the key on the E string like he showed you and practice.

That is a very serious compliment, considering that it is coming from Guitar Hack, of all people. Kudos!!

A minor pentatonic scale is the gateway drug for beginner guitarists, especially in the key of A minor lol

I haven’t played since 16, now I’m 71 and thank you so much for simplifying, great teacher!!! 👏👏👏🙏🎼🎼
Brian, as a 56 year old self taught professional entertainer of 51 years, I still look at development as I reach retirement. I must say, I really enjoyed this video, and you may find me as a regular. You teach things in such an easy way for people to learn.
Entertaining since age 5. That’s commitment.
Combining EP489 with this lesson was huge for me! You are an excellent instructor and I am so grateful for all that I have learned from you.
Make it work! Neil Young once said if I hit a wrong note I just slide up or down 'til it's right.
Great tips here. Teaching is about taking complex concepts and making them comprehensible. This man knows how to teach.
Everything you do, Brian, sounds fantastic! Great starter lesson here. For those who like the sound of what Brian demonstrated here, check out the EP155!
Thanks JoLa F.
Yup, EP155 is very useful, thanks for the heads up😎
Your presentations are clear and explanations are reviewed..there is no rushing along..keep on with this method.
The introduction I've been looking for. Start simple with a small set... when comfortable, expand. Very well done! Thank You!
I suspect you don't hear and remember melodies then. Good luck!
This is the kind of video I've been looking for, thank you very much!
Hi Was wondering what brand/model guitar your using in this video?? It’s beautiful! I’m after that tone acoustically
Thanks!
Your lessons are fantastic! Thank you so much for such a great content and motivation, wish you all the best in 2021.
have to say this is the best lesson i've seen for getting going with minor pentatonic blues lead - by a mile! - particularly the slide up to the higher octave box. cheers
I really suck at lead. I'm good at picking, and strumming, but I see a 10 yr old kid tearing it up and I feel defeated before I start. So I'm going to basics and this is very timely.
You can make it! And then it will be the greatest time of your life :)
Learn to play, and you'll have a friend for life.
like it Tim.
Yep. Learning these days is way easier for anyone. If you get stuck play a youtube video.
Ditto to the OP
Your Lead "formula" for blues makes it so much easier for me now to move further. Cheers from Malaysia.
Appreciate you much Brian. Thank you!
You might star with learning the "caged system"... It will help you learn how to move your open chords to other positions on the fretboard....
Brilliant explanation. Folks this is gold! He showed Am. Next, find Bm, then Cm, the Dm, etc. Just keep finding the root of the key on the E string like he showed you and practice.
