My head just exploded! After all of these years, Brian is finally letting me in on the secret sauce. Learning Dorian by starting on the second interval of the major scale, or mixolydian from the 5th interval, is like doing calculus while trying to jam. This greatly simplified how to move from major to mixolydian to dorian without thinking. The key.......without thinking. Great teaching method.

Just learn the Major Scale and from there the Key of Songs.
Best to go up to Circle Of Fifths then you won't need You Tube.
All the other stuff is just extra bits of interpreting the same thing.
It's not secret or calculus etc.
      That's just You Tube fakery.

I love the guitar. It’s like a giant puzzle that slowly becomes more clear over the years. This is a very good explanation of some of the pieces coming together. Major scale all over the neck is the gateway to the modes. Combined with caged major and minor chords. Good old pentatonic and you’re well on your way. And if you think you’ve learnt it all……you haven’t !! 😊 that’s what’s great about it.

Just jammed a bit with the slow major backing track - it's such a fun to slide on one string seamlessly between the two first modes, switching back and force between those.
As a progressed beginner (with 2 years of pausing) this tutorial made me improvise for the first time in my life only after a few minutes of getting the shape into my fingers - awesome!

I've seen a number of great lessons this week that take this simple approach, where you're not having to thing about the everything, but minimal patterns... Or, just a part of what we would traditionally see as a whole pattern (from low E to the high E string). It takes real self control to not get totally sucked into learning the whole fret board without taking a break with the smaller, manageable things in life to just enjoy music. You've inspired me to look at the use of the arpeggio triads patterns on strings 2 to 4, along with the your scale pattern : )

Pretty nice; I saw the diagram in my preview feed, and fiddled around with it (well, guitared around, actually) and found some of the scales. Afterward, I watched the video & enjoyed it; I'd correctly nailed some of the material ahead of watching, and that was pleasant.
I've been a devout Brian fan for years now, and always get great hints, helpful monologs, and tasty compositions!
I'm a geek & retired Mechanical Engineer, so I don't find any musical topics overwhelming; the theory parts of it are great, intriguing fun, and I dig right in!
    Thanks again, Brian!

HI Brian - by complete luck I've recently been playing with Dorian mode as I venture away from the regular pentatonic, but until this lesson it felt very much something I could only use to add colour to the existing pentatonic and therefor minor focussed. By showing that same shape is so versatile, dialling in major and even myxolydian, suddenly connects it to everything else and shows the value and versatility of that pattern.
So, huge thanks for shining a light on it in a new way - perfect timing!
