I dont know what your name is and would like to thankyou so much. I joined a band in 1972 and my predominate roll was rhythm guitarist. I played for about 26 years and did a few instrumental covers, just copied songs for note for note. I'm 72 now and trying to learn lead guitar for Blues and Rock, learnt the Pentatonic scales, Major and minor, and scales and was totally frustrated, I was stuck in a rut, its like having the tools but not able to build anything. I have literally spent 65 years playing guitar since I was a kid playing other friends guitars till I could afford to buy one, this was when I started work at the age of fifteen, took me thirty long weeks to save up £15.00 to buy my first red electric guitar. OK as ive said i have been totally frustrated, just stuck and not going anywhere, well after seeing this video, its opened up a whole new world, I can jam along in any key confidently now. It was the those little or full bends, hammer ons, pull offs and timing did the trick for me, just showing those four riffs, and now implimenting my own, its a game changer. Honestly, if anyone is in the same situation as i was, fully reccomend this tutorial, it took me a day of slow practise, but im now jamming to backing tracks with confidence. Happy Days...

I am 66 years old and I learn pentatonic all over the frets, but it always sound mechanical, no spririt, no beauty. But I believe this one will be a game changer for me. Thank you very much to the instructor (I do not know his name).

Yep, I was copying notes so long but I could never figure out the method for discovering those notes. Understanding the “logic” behind the notes on the guitar is what has eluded me and it’s crazy because somebody figured this stuff out with even less resources than we have.

If you start the above pattern/shape from C (6th string 8th fret), it is C MAJOR pentatonic - and it is based on the open G chord shape as you said. HOWEVER, if you start from the A (6th string 5th fret) it is A MINOR pentatonic, and THAT is based on the open E chord shape. Yes they are the same notes, but as the ROOT note changes, so do the anchor chords. Anybody who knows CAGED system, knows that the E shape and G shapes overlap. (as do the other shapes) Same notes, but actually TWO different CHORD shapes based on where the ROOT note is located.

Thank you! I'm just getting back into practice again after recuperating from a few years of debilitating injuries and subsequent surgery. That guitar reminds me of my first electric guitar, rescued from a junk pile circa 1975. It was an off-brand single-pickup with a 19-fret neck & basically a discount store Strat imitation body shape. The partial Frampton lick really brought back memories of being a student guitarist in about fifth grade. 😎

Been doing this since 1983. I learned this system of fretboard anatomy from Doug Marks Metal Method lessons when I was a kid ordering mail guitar lessons. I learned to read music later but knew all of this first. 5 moveable shapes that repeat up the neck . The patterns return to the neck position when they run off the 24th fret ( or 21, 22 ) . 7 scales in each pattern. Major, dorian, phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, natural minor, locrian, back to Major.

I trust it's already been spoken to, but when you play that 'G pattern' shape at the fifth fret with your index finger it doesn't become a mere 'A scale' pentatonic pattern, but instead an 'A minor' pentatonic scale pattern. Played in the same place, with your pinky as a reference on the eight fret, such shares the same notes/pattern with the 'Cmajor' pentatonic scale. Just sayin as a mere novice player.

Hi Charlie, my fave guitarist is the late Roy Buchanan. His playing could bring out every emotion that I have. I was able to see him once many years ago. If I picked a player still alive, it would be Angus Young, for a completely different reason. He can get my adrenalin pumping just like I was young again. Fave part of the lesson was just listening to your playing, I already know all my pentatonics in all positions, but hearing your fluency was great.

It'd be helpful to add tips for picking, e.g. I found that lick #4 works better if 5-5 strings picked UP, but there might be more subtle moves. adding more info will make it longer, but maybe additional short video to this one just about picking patterns to spicy the sound

Glad you covered Pentatonic Patterns vs Scales. Had me confused for weeks before I figured out that there must be a distinction between them. Great Video Training Lesson! Thumbs Way Up!

Thanks Eddie! Great lesson! Of all the RUclips Guitar Lessons out there, yours are my favorite because of the level of detail you go into and the multiple camera angles you use and just your way of understanding people are just learning these concepts. Awesome!

So the continued reference is “the G pentatonic pattern”. Is that the same as box 1 of the minor pentatonic scale. Great video. Loved the 4 riffs. But it’s like you shifted from 1st gear to 4th gear demonstrating the riffs. Then from 4th gear to 6th gear playing to the backing tracks. Great stuff. There’s about a years worth of practice for me in the last half of the video. Thanks so much. 👍

This made so much sense! Thank you! I'd say it's an unorthodox approach, but then I saw your cross, and it made my day because I'm Orthodox as well. Excellent lesson and for sure a new subscriber here! 👽👍🏼
